I've posted another <a href="http://scythe.gotdns.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=63" target="_blank">update</a> on my blogue. In this entry I've outlined what I hope to do with the weapons in USG. In short: The player builds their own.
There's also a screenshot of some basic map functionality rendering in DirectX. Woo!
Yep. Still watching this. Considering you've switch to PC now I'll be up for playtesting it if you need someone. And if it's on Linux I'll go round to my mate's and play it at his place (and I'm sure he'll appreciate having something other than Dwarf Fortress and that 386-esque Elite-esque game to play).
I just took a quick screenshot of my new and improved galaxy generator. Not worth a blog post, but still pretty cool.
Here's one showing the "badness" of a particular system. The player's starting position is shown as a blue reticule. The closest 15-20% planets to the player's starting position are the "starting zone". In this zone the player isn't likely to encounter anything that'll rip his face off in one hit. These systems are shown in orange. The furtherest 15-25% of systems are nasty ones, shown in white. This is the endgame zone where the final game objectives will be found. Keep in mind these numbers will change depending on how it plays.
oh, and nifty <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
however, for the first one, the yellow dots are those that are the midgame? things that will rip your face off, but not as often as in the end game area?
the whole randomized galaxy thing reminds me of <a href="http://www.shrapnelgames.com/digital_eel/weird_worlds/1.htm" target="_blank">Weird Worlds</a>. Looking very cool so far - keep it up!

Yeah, they'll be where the player will spend about half the game.
My latest <a href="http://scythe.gotdns.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=64" target="_blank">blouge post</a> is up. It's not as screenshot-packed and oozing with exciting action as my last few, but it's the result of a some new stuff I've started working on. It also lists the stats that I'll be using in my RPG-lite game. Soon some actual combat might be possible! Woo!
I'm also looking for some pixel sprite artists. If you think you've got what it takes to replace my utterly putrid planet sprites, I'd love to hear from you.
I maek bettur <a href="http://scythe.gotdns.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77" target="_blank">post</a>.
That link up there will take you to my very first blogue, an exclusive document exclusively written by the exclusive artist of Scythe's game. Sure, reading about his fun adventures in DirectX land or gazing at a stick figure on a blue grid might be exciting, but my blogue has pictures of such beauty that they make Scythe's "blouge" weep! Go, and discover the truth inherent in all art!
<a href="http://tjhowse.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=79" target="_blank">Blouge number five</a> goes into a bit of depth as to why I hate god. Well... not really god, just his hand. Grr.
I also expound on some of the difficulties I've been having with building my ingame economy. Supply! Demand! Mittens! It's all so complicated.
--Scythe--
P.S. I changed the thread title. Aboose etc.
P. P. S. S. <a href="http://tjhowse.com/usgfiles/" target="_blank">Here</a>'s a little thing I wrote up that gives a succinct description of what USG is.
sup, thought i would toss a teaser in of some form, if ya wanna know how to do it i can knock ya out a tutorial in all its gramma less miss spelt glory, planets can have multiple layers of clouds if need be you could set the entire solare system up with propper lighting haveing planets cast shadows on each other and so on, even a few frame render of each planet rotateing on what ever its axis has happens to be, moons orbiting around planets. eh doesnt take much or long, in the event that you wish to reuse planets you could evenhave planets change overtime or contestion swaping of control groups. but what ever, i started makeing a little galaxy then i found i had too many planets and couldnt be bothered resizeing my canva's for a teaser.

Those are butt ugly. I'm 99% sure I know how you did it, and even if I didn't know, I don't want the tutorial that gives me a crappy bumpy sphere with random color splotches. There's a reason people still draw things in 2d even though it means sacrificing all the lighting information that 3d gives you. You have control over the final product that you don't get in 3d without more work.
Rotation is a different issue, though, and there are ways to do it beyond making a crappy planet in Maya.

Hum i wouldnt even know what parallax mapping is, basicly my bump maps where way to big in greyscale detail and contrasts in shades, mainly for the ocean and a few things but what can you exspect when you make a texture in about 8 click and applie about 5 filters to it. will have to wiki parallax maps, cheers fuzzy i am usualy willing to bordan my skill pool.

Not much of a point in using that over geometry. In fact, it gives worse detail, since it is of course an approximation.

Sometimes the effort it takes to explain something, while great, is nowhere near the amount of effort that the person you're explaining it to would have to go through to figure it out on their own, and even if you manage to get the point across, it will be a small, lonely island of knowledge in their vast sea of ignorance, a sea that they cannot ply because their intellect has neglected to supply them a boat.

and it drips with that much show boating, grats, you got the job. but i still wasnt talking to you, i also offered a diffrent dynamic.
rotating, orbiting planets/moons with 3d lighting, something that could very easly add a different demention to his game, but yet again thycho i find my self justifying my self to a rude prick.
i would love to go to a job interview with tycho, have him tell all the other candidates they suck when the employers asking for more than one employee, cos right there at that momment, I have already applied, and if hes already been accepted, i would rather just punch him in the lip, than get the job and have to work beside him. but sure if you can do all the work with your fat lip, as apose to more than one person, grats tycho, i offer you all the best of luck and hope you choke on your work load.
obiously this would hinder sythes game, if he loses his artist, which i wouldnt want to see happen *the hinderance of sythes game that is, but oh well i stuck my foot in the door. and i am now politely removeing it, for the water isnt carm anymore, and this window has closed.

We get it, you hate Tycho. All of us have hated Tycho at some point in our lives, lord knows I have, especially during his "Haiku Phase". Oh man, were you even there for that Nex? I would have figured you got all of your Tycho-hate out of your system by then along with the rest of us.
So yeah, stop being a mean towards Tycho just because your idea was not chosen to be implemented in the way that you wanted it to be. i.e. at all.
Also: Scythe said much nicer things then I did, so go read his post right below mine because it's nice and not at all offensive or rude like I am.

Here's one with properly coloured stars. Hotter stars are more numerous further from the player's starting position.
