Btw: Lollyunscene starts his report with: ""To Whom it my Concern,"
Edit: it's bazillion, not bajillion
Edit2: Regarding year 2: Good writing, lolly. I really enjoyed it. Also: Anvils are produced at the metalsmith. So even if we managed to get steel items to melt, we wouldn't be able to make an anvil from there. Edit3: And to make things worse: I am starting to doubt, that the skybridge will work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> FYI there is a metalsmith with an iron anvil and wood furnace on the same level as the non-magma workshops. Also there's one bar of steel floating around somewhere from a melted battle axe and crossbow. I had queued up a replacement battleaxe but I didn't check to see if it ever got built. Also I forgot to turn wood cutting back on.
And Abra: the fun part is coming up. You may not have a lot of assigned tasks, but the best part is making up your own stuff to do. My turn was actually pretty boring, I just told a lot of stories because I knew it would be with year two.
The barracks is complete! Unfortunately I've just discovered that there was <i>already</i> a completed barracks on the lower level, but everyone was apparently too polite to tell me. Argh. dragon sets a single dwarf on fire, dwarf burns to death, several dwarves start storing the burning clothes in wooden bins, bins catch fire -> whole fortress burns
Giant eagle decides to show up ->we are boned
And lets not forget: Because several people are building things like: "hole in the big evil doomsday machine" leading to magma leaking into the fort are way more likely to happen
But once the gobbo invasion reach the size of 50+ it will get hard. Trolls will destroy every outdoor building, including floodgates and windmills. Then lots of the better traps will stop working due to lack of power and their sheer numbers are usually enough to just disable all traps after a while.
>_> <_< I'm sacred. Train some marksdwarves, STAT!
Edit: And once the King arrives and turns the whole fort into a palace of hammering, cause he keeps demanding aluminum puzzleboxes, which we simply cannot supply him it will get ugly. I promise.
While bowmen are nasty, they're not common, and all you have to do is pause the moment you see a death message, find the cause, call everyone inside and lock the doors. Or if the military is big enough, send them out first. It'll weed out the weaklings from the dwarves, although the most likely outcome is the ambushers run out of ammo and run away.. And only pansies rely on traps. If your dwarves can't zerg rush bronze collosi and beat them to death within a minute, they deserve to be stomped.
Well, I had a fort once, that ran smoothly and was nearly perfect. All dwarves legendary, enough raw materials demon pits discovered and sealed off. I still lost, because at one point my seven starting dwarves died of old age more or less at the same moment, resulting in the whole ######ing fort to go berserk/insane. So, if you intend to prevent fort death, make sure that those ######s dont socialize with each other <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Speaking of demon pits: If we have adamantine and someone manages to dig around it, straight into the pits we are also boned.
Ok, I can't believe no-one told me we have ONE axe in the entire fortress. There should be one axe per <i>dwarf</i> if I get my way. As i've mentioned in the story thread, this has meant a very limited supply of wood, which means a limited supply of coal, which means limited ability to make more axes. Catch 22. Seems that most of my turn is going to be spent getting the raw materials flowing freely again, and building a nice big ramp down the cliffside. It would be nice if at least one wagon could make it to a trade depot before the end of my turn; we have a big pile of <strike>trade goods</strike> junk to sell, and it would be nice if we could get a nice big pile of stuff in return, especially given our severe shortage of... most things.
Although now that I think of it, with no bookeeper I guess no-one knew we only had one axe. Ho hum.

We got magma forges! The only thing we need coal for is steel production.
One axe PER DWARF? What the pfargtl? You're mad. Mad like Urist who wanted to make a legendary adamantite scepter decorated with dragon bone. But who am I to stop you? Do it in your turn.
By the way, I notice the starting build has no anvil. I won't say "told ya," because I didn't tell ya, but I WOULD have told ya if I'd known the starting build ahead of time. I mean, what could be more important than an anvil? Without an anvil, you don't get to make weapons or armor, and therefore also no weapon traps. An anvil is CRITICAL to fort defense. The reasoning that "you can always get one later" is quite plainly faulty when it has been shown several times (including this fort) that you can't count on it. I feel very vindicated in my anvil-bringing ways.

I would if we had enough damn iron ore to spare. Every good dwarf should have an axe and an alcoholic beverage on them at all times, or they're not a <i>real</i> dwarf. We need <i>some</i> kind of weaponry asap, because right now if there was a goblin invasion (or more likely, ambush), we'd be fighing them off with leather armour, bare hands and bone crossbows.

Dismantle the old non magma forge and use the anvil to make a magma forge. Should be kinda obvious.

Next part is up. Sorry, but going to have to take one last evening to finish this properly. Expect a brief update with few if any pictures. My guy died, so he's been replaced by my other net alias, Extra-Medium. The dwarf in question is presently mayor, formerly wrestler, formerly peasant. I.e, he's one of the four or five I drafted in right near the start of my turn. Talk about going up in the world.
Oh, and i'm aware that some of the new images are of the browser-stretching variety, for which I apologise. Will fix later. Sleep now.
