Your siege operator has succeeded only at lobbing a few rocks around at nothing, and running away when the goblins attacked. I guess the catapult needs to count as "inside" for civvies to be able to use it when we're being sieged and I only want soldiers outside. My tomb contains my coffin at present, and nothing else. Screenies once I decorate it some; i've never really seen tombs as having much point besides keeping nobles happy and being a ######-waving competition in community games like this.

And lolfighter, yes I am aware you can build walls, I was thinking more in terms of rigging something so that the entrance caves in <i>on top</i> of any attackers who try to use it.

In my own game I just created a magma forge using an Iron Anvil, so I'm going to go ahead and say you don't need a Steel Anvil for the Magma Forge.

The first time I tried to make the magma forge I didn't do it right and had a magma overflow that took two or three seasons to clear out... Found out that doors make good magma blockades... Except that I accidentally starved two of my dwarfs to death when I built walls in the temporary passages after the magma crisis was over. (The passages were there due to the magma filling up the main hallway)... I had forgot to turn the doors to be passable again.

I told one Dwarf to build me a wooden crossbow and he sat in the shop until he died of starvation... I think he was too stupid to figure it out (the door wasn't locked, so he should have just gone and got some food. the stupid fool)

Those who get fatally injured/disabled during training wouldn't have been worthy soldiers anyway.
Should have stolen the anvils from the dwarves, they joys a magma forge brings warrants any possible sacrifice.

Nice story fortress you got there, could use some more goblin sieges and mangled elves though <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Did you not read the story thread? I had the mayor take over, under my other net alias "ExtraMedium". Two dwarves for the price of one baby, booyah!

I considered just pretending it was a different dwarf, or he was covering my shift while I was off drinking or somesuch, but I had such beautiful before and after shots that I just had to post it; a pretty heroic way to die tbh; fending off a goblin attack basically solo (only one other marksdwarf showed up in time to make a difference).

So on that note, i'd advise anyone else against making their dwarf a soldier, because this is what will inevitably happen!

So what do I do ruler-wise? Do I name a dwarf and make him ruler to act that he is (I am) indeed a new ruler chosen?

Also: Our entrances confuse me. The largest one doesn't seem to go anywhere significant, unless the 'skybridge' actually draws invasions in.

Do the goblins always attack from the lower entrance as shown in Nil_IQ's story post?

    More questions coming!

Ruler wise, pick a dwarf with a funny name or something from the next immigrant wave. I didn't bother to promote mine to mayor in the actual game(I don't think I could at the time) but you can.

The only thing that will come through the main entrance are kobold thieves and they will not use the sky bridge. I think trade paths are predefined so the skybridge was doomed to failure from the start. Regardless there's no path to get on the skybridge from the other side.

No, the skybridge doesn't go anywhere. Which is a shame because it looks pretty for a collection of ASCII tiles. Consider closing one of the upper entrances, just make sure the woodcutters still have easy access to the trees on top.

Only one goblin attack so far afaik, which was directed at the lower entrance. The elves and humans will come from the north side of the valley, entering from the west. The dwarven caravan will also come from the north, but entering from the east instead of the west. ALL of the caravans should be able to access the depot now, but i'm sure extending the road won't hurt.

    *edit*

I just remembered, we have a crapload of gems and two jewelers, so we should be able to buy a metric crapton of stuff from the next lot of caravans if we can get a nice big pile of jewel encrusted crafts.

Just had a small goblin ambush... the former rulers sure trained some adequate wrestlers. One wrestler wrestled down 4 goblins before his squadmates arrived.

Making steel requires some micromanagement I haven't figured out quite yet, but we have a steel anvil and I did produce some weaps before running out of steel.

What do I click in what order on what shops to get steel out in the other end?

We have a dungeon master now, can I name him ?

The wiki is good for that sort of thing. I think it's charcoal(made at a wood furnace) + flux(a class of stone) + pig iron + iron = steel.

By all means name the dungeon master. Make him yourself if you want. For all intents and purposes this is your fortress now, do with it as you please. Common courtesy is that you don't mess too much with former rules or their tombs, and you don't flood the entire fortress intentionally, but everything is pretty much fair game.

    Pig iron:
    Iron bar+Flux+Fuel OR Magma

    Iron:
    Ore + Fuel OR Magma

    Steel:
Iron + Pig Iron + Flux + Fuel + Fuel OR Magma

If you only use magma smelters 2 steel bars require:
    1x Pig Iron bar
    1x Iron bar
    1x Flux
    1x Fuel

Cause you also needs to create the iron bars and pig irons bars it totals to with using magma smelters:
    2x Iron Ore
    2x Flux
    1x Fuel

The reactions will appear, when all ressources are available. Hence, you only see the adamantine reactions when there is actually reachable adamantine.

Just mine some marble to get flux, make sure you have iron bars and you should be able to create pig iron.

For the record, our "army" consisted of two marksdwarves at the start of my turn. They're labelled as "wrestlers" because that's what they're best at, but they should all be armed with shields and short swords and at least know which end to hold and which end to hit the bad guys with. Swords seemed a good weapon to go for, on the basis that if we run out of iron again we can always fall back on the obsidian ones.

Its always a good idea to train up in wrestling a little before going for weapons training; wrestling skill affects the ability to dodge incoming attacks as well as unarmed damage. I also didn't want any sparring injuries while they were wearing scraps for armour.

Hmm, I keep trying to set up traps in my new fort, but I think i'm getting it wrong because they never seem to work. A few questions for those in the know:

    - Do any traps trigger on their own, or do they all need pressure plates?
    - What's the timing on pressure plates like? I.e, if there's a pressure plate followed by a spike and a goblin steps on the pressure plate, will he get impaled by the spike, or will it pop up instantly, allowing him to step around it?
    - What are some good trap setups that have worked for you guys?

And unrelated to traps... is it possible, by any means, to get an underground wood source? I'm going for complete underground autonomy this time around. I can redirect water, and I can make subterranian farms, but i'm going to need to go outside for wood at least, right?

    tbh:
    <a href="http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Trap" target="_blank">http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Trap</a>

That shows you the basics of traps. Rock fall and weapon traps are by far the easiest ones to work with.

I've built cage traps, weapon traps, and stone fall traps without pressure plates. I haven't seen a cage trap actually work yet but I assume it will.

If you flood stone floors I think there's a random chance a tower caps will go. I was considering devoting a large area using pressure plates to automatically reflood to try and grow them but supposedly it's hard to do because it requires a lot of luck.
  • FaskaliaFaskalia Wechsellichtzeichenanlage Join Date: 2004-09-12 Member: 31651Members, Constellation
    @ NIL

If you tap an underground river or lake, spores are released and towercaps can grow on any muddy subterran tile.
This can however mean, that waterchannels get blocked, by towercaps that grow there. So after finding an underground water source you better pave your water channels with roads. The roads will block the towercap grow.

I don't think I'll actually start doing anything until the story is up so that I get a handle on what's happened so far.... going back through the log, it might be interesting... with many baby deaths.

In the mean time, I'm looking over the fort to get my bearings. Or perhaps musk oxings.
