Rosetta Stone: Sucking the res
<div class="IPBDescription">language learning program</div>I've recently installed Rosetta Stone on my PC, and it's everything it's cracked up to be.
Thing is, as I progress with my lessons the proggy starts sucking resources and gets laggy. Mind you, I've got a decent PC here and have no issues whatsoever with it, but I've checked my Task Manager when this thing gets slow and have seen it over 400,000k.
It's a minor inconvenience, as I can easily restart the proggy, but why does it use so many resources?
...just curious.

Which language are you learning? I'm intrigued that you say it's good. Anything in particular that makes you say that?

Good idea, I'll try that.

I have the Levels 1, 2, and 3 of Spanish installed - my g/f's Puerto Rican and although she is fluent in English, whenever we're amongst friends or family I'm left scratching my head. Research showed me this is one of the most popular language learning programs around, and it uses a process called "Dynamic Immersion" that teaches you new languages not via translation, but more like you learned your native language as a child (showing images and using pronunciation).
I'm to old to be taught new tricks, but this works well. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> It retails for $500.00usd, but of course is available through warez or what-have-you.

Same situation here, my girlfriend is Indian and I'm using it to learn Hindi. I've been very irregular about it, but when we went to a hindi movie a week ago I actually understood some of the sentences! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> I'm awful at learning languages too.

Patched it, borked it, had to uninstall / reinstall. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
moultano, you have RS installed also?

not my fault they make faulty products
or that you pirated it and the crack was fixed in the patch your just applied.
Perceptive you are amigo, gracias.
Reinstallation was a snap, but reinstalling the language packs is tedious/timeconsuming.
I am more interested in fixing this resource issue so I can install this on my g/f's laptop tbh. As it is now there's no way it could handle this.
I've been wanting to solidify and continue my basic education in Japanese. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Want to learn Japanese or Chinese in case US goes bork.
I'm installing 3.2.11 now, so I'll see if I get any memory leakage.

I started a class in Japanese a few weeks ago but before that I had mostly been using online resources.
@Depot, is it lagging after using the program for a long time or just starts lagging right from the beginning.

3.2.11 is what I have also.

It gets laggy as time progresses. It starts off using < 100k of res, and as the lesson goes on progresses to over 400k.

Apparantly it's just a very bulky application.

No Bulgarish on that Rosetta Stone <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

After several lessons it bogs down... still usable but I can tell it's getting worse. I'll try the patch again, and hope for better luck.

I was mistaken about my version - I have just successfully upgraded to 3.2.11.
We'll see if this rectifies the memory leakage issue. Have yet to follow Zaggy's advice yet.
I just tried that with Japanese. Interesting program. Thanks for the link.
How does it compare with Rosetta?
Think of the motor sound you make with your mouth where you rap your tongue on the top of your mouth. Or try to imitate a cat growl/purr. It comes down to rapid vibrations of the tongue.
At least, that's what I've been taught. Not a native spanish speaker.

My problem with trying to roll an r is I end up doing it the (i think) german way, and do it using my throat.
I can make a cool bird-like whistle because of it and a very convincing purr/growl, but I don't use my tongue and so I wouldn't be a very good spanish speaker. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
good luck

Didn't want that to be forgotten on the previous page, cuz I'm really interested in that too!

I almost had it, but then I started doing the throat thing by accident and lost it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

I am sucking at this.... ... .. . <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
I can't do it either. Just be glad it's not absolutely necessary when speaking Spanish.

I've only briefly used Rosetta stone. The program Zaggy linked was neat for me to practice some words but I don't think it would really teach you the language.
I was pretty bad at Spanish when I took it in High School and I could never roll my r properly.
But yeah, rolling sounds is one of the weirder parts. I guess I can only do it since I've always liked making weird sound effects using my mouth. Unfortunately, I'm not beatbox level.
Still looking for a good program to learn languages then, or are we settling for Rosetta as long as we can take the performance hit?
