I'm enjoying it, and it has its moments for sure. But it's really screaming Oblivion to me.

There are moments where it comes across as an oblivion mod, but for the most part it's an incredible game. I'm having a blast.

I'm finding I enjoyed Fallout 2 more (and this is having only played a classing Fallout game for the first time this year) But so far Fallout 3 hasn't been bad, it just hasn't surprised me with its depth the way fallout 2 did (For example, finding a brahmin with a broken leg and being able to use the doctor skill to fix it) Theres just no sense of "Holy ######, I can do that?"

however, I do realize this is partly to the non-inclusion of a targetable skill system which isn't really a bad thing. It does make it harder to add a sense of surprising depth, but it also means obsessive people won't end up trying to use every skill on every item in the game.

Overall it just sorta feels like whenever Bethesda was stuck deciding between deep roleplaying and gameplay they generally chose gameplay. Which is great, the game is fun, and in depth roleplaying done the wrong way can be mind numbingly painful.. but I don't get the feeling Fallout 2 gave me, where it made me feel like a giant nerd, but in the most gleeful of ways.

I haven't gotten to play enough of it (WAR/RB2/watching Dexter/etc), but what I have played so far makes me incredibly happy.

What I expected and then quite a bit more.

    Favorite things so far:
Huge world that doesn't suck to explore.
Interesting characters (I have yet to run into a non interesting NPCs that you can actually speak to).
    The quests are INTERESTING. (I love the guidebook one <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />)
    Lockpicking is fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

It seems to be able to reward ANY play style:
I am going through with my standard build (high int/cha/ref, small guns, and everything to help me with talking to people and being Good). However I can see enjoying going through as the evil psycho ninja (something that is normally not overly interesting to me), a Demo expert, a full combat character (ignoring the more in depth dialog stuff), etc etc etc. I think it could even be done as a neutral character (somethign that normally sucks in games where you can pick good/evil).

things I am having issues with:
Combat outside of VATS is just combat inside of VATS. My best example was dealing with 2 Ants. One worker (small) one Warrior (about 4X the size). The warrior was in the rear, the worker in front, and both in my face. I decided to ignore the worker and burn down the warrior asap. Every single shot I fired bent at about a 45 degree angle to go directly into the worker (was a las pistol, so you can see exactly where it goes). Where you aim (outside of VATS) really doesn't matter. It is still all determined by the %s, and what you are aiming for sometimes doesn't matter. Honestly, this is my biggest gripe, and it isn't a big one. I tend not to notice it (I knew about it, but it hadn't become apparent until the above example).

My only other issue is the lack of a manual/good in game help.
Hold Tab to get a light.
Hold R to holster a weapon
Hold 1-0 to set a hotkey for an item/weapon in your Pipboy to let you quick swap outside of the pipboy.
there are reasons to click on other characters then possible passwords when hacking. <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Necro explained it as clicking on "<" then ">" if they are on the same line, you can get bonuses for it</span>

Yah, awesome game. Looking forward to playing on my weekend (m/t).

@ Hacking <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>What kind of bonuses, xp or additional access?</span> Also, does 4/7 for example mean that the word I chose has 4/7 correct letters in any part of it or correctly placed aswell? Even with nice science skills I just keep guessing until I usually hit it on first try <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Yea, in-game help for those things would have been nice, I just played around with the controller (360) until I found something interesting.

    The perks are awesome.

What, outside VATS isn't determined by % whether you hit or miss is it? At least, you cannot have the crosshair on the sky and hit the designated target no matter how much you try.

Which skill determines pickpocketing, sneak or lockpick, or both at same time?

Repairing is tedious and it sucks the shops cant repair fully either. Lots of good equipment that isn't worth anything cause of condition. It's also expensive, good thing all shops have lots of caps you can trade anything in for.

Regarding Brotherhood of Steel, <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>It really, really sucks that they force you to more or less join them to be able to use brotherhood powerarmor (need training to use em), which also apparently suck, maybe because it's so god damn plentyful of them lying around on dead corpses? I'm level 5 and looted 2 dead BoS after seeing em fight super mutants. Guess they balance it with insane repair costs</span>
  • X_StickmanX_Stickman Not good enough for a custom title. Join Date: 2003-04-15 Member: 15533Members, Constellation
Bought it on steam last night and I was just going to bed when I noticed it had fully downloaded (uni download speeds rock, took just over an hour). So I thought "what the hey, I'll play through the tutorial to get a feel". 4 hours later...

I can't even explain what's so addictive about it. It just is. There are also some cool little touches, like that guide book quest. <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'> I noticed that you don't actually have to go to the places for her. If you have a high enough speech skill, you can just lie and tell her you've been there and complete it, which is kinda cool. Just an interesting option to have.</span>

I don't get computer hacking, at all. I think I accidentally clicked off the instructions when I first did it (and got the popup help thing) and now it's just guesswork for me, which usually doesn't work. I should probably search online for some help with that.

The lockpicking is awesomely cool. Kinda fiddily at first but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty intuitive. Closest I've seen to real lockpicking in a game, anyway.

There are some parts that scream "oblivion" to me, and whenever that happens, it kinda jolts me out of the game for a few minutes, which is annoying. Things like characters getting off a bed (even the way they lie on the bed itself) looks to be taken frame for frame from oblivion. Not that it's a particularly bad thing, it just stands out to me.

    Two other things:

Swearing: So far, handled pretty good. Usually in games that involve swearing it's either over done to the point of boredom, or used wrongly, or the actors just suck at delivering them. Works pretty well so far.

Kids in the game: Kinda disturbs me, because the thought of hurting the kids is kinda weird. <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'> In Megaton I told the sheriff about the guy wanting to blow the town up, and then the sheriff got killed. And then a while later, I met his son, who talked about his dad dying and him not knowing who's gonna take care of him, and I felt guilty because THAT WAS THE FIRST ######ING KID I SAW IN-GAME</span>.

    Fun.

I've got the Steam version, and it sometimes just freezes when I'm inside a building. Very grating. Google shows lots of people with similar problems, but none of their solutions help me. Guess all I can do is shelve the game and wait patiently for a patch.

The game obsessively crashes for me. I need to play in windowed mode with LoD turned to a minimum in order to play reasonably stably. That being said, it's pretty good so far. I'm not willing to say it's the game I was waiting for to have the torch passed from fallout2, for alot of reasons fallout 2 was better, but it's better than stalker at the whole RPG/FPS thing, which makes it still a very very fun game.

    On Hacking:

Select a word from the gibberish and it will tell you how many letters are correct out of total (0/4 3/4 etc).
You have 4 chances per interaction with the terminal (so just exit after 3 guesses)
The correct answer will NOT always be on the screen. It apparently has somethign to do with your skill (the higher the skill the better the chance it will be there).

Hacking is something I am very much not happy with.

Fun whenever it doesn't crash, which is like once every 20 minutes.
I thought hacking was pretty clever - if you pick REFER and it's 0/5, then the answer can't be TEAMS, MINOR or CHEEZ, so if you just keep your wits about, you'll only need 2 guesses. While not actual hacking it does make me feel clever for figuring the PW out.
But Than, you sure it's possible for the answer to not appear? It's already impossible to even attempt hacking something above your skill level, so such an obstacle seems pointless.

I had a serious bug with the ant queen quest.

<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'> After getting the mission from the half-crazed scientist I did as he said, killed guardians but not the queen. Everything was fine and dandy but why is there a computer in there? Oh well, I'll just walk around this corner and ... why did the queen ant pop up in front of me? in a place it doesn't even fit? After a few potshots it's gone again and back in the main cavern, weird. I return to the scientist to get my reward (pretty damn sweet) and he says "I better get back down there to my science equipment", I followed him just for ######s and giggles. Down the hole and in to the hive. I watch as he casually walks up the the queen and then sits down in front of his computer. The queen seems puzzled for a while but then decides it's no fun with a humanoid sticking around with genetic experiments to exterminate their anty superiority, so she starts attacking him. Surprisingly (really, after seeing this much) he panics and runs away to a corner to get executed by a acid vomit ball. Was this part of his experiment or did I do something wrong? I'm all guns and no brains after all. Well, I got everything I could from the s.o.b so I decided to kill the queen, for the simple matter of experience (totally-not-worth-it experience).</span> One long backtrack and a orphan later I decide run around until the sun comes up, seriously, where the hell is the wait function? Why can I sleep in a super-duper-market bed behind the meat counter with a rotten exploded corpse on but not on a dead scientists bed? Seems like being careless enough to <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'> blow up a entire city for money/fun (mostly fun)</span> isn't enough to withstand the moral consequences of lying down on a (dead) strangers bed for a few hours.

Okay so 35 hours into the game and I've encountered a few bugs. I'm not all bash so I just have to say that I am immersed in the game and love it. Even though sometimes it feels like oblivion... namely when you talk to any npcs.

First bug I noticed is while I was in Megaton I was panning my camera around and my character completely dissapeared except for her helmet and her gun. Weird... but harmless, I just went to first person then back to third to fix it.

Second bug was in vault 106 <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>when the flashback sequence kicks in and the room goes blue huey and you see three of your father. This is where my game froze up after clicking talk to dad.</span> This was actually the second time it locked up. The first time I was in fort Bannister headshotting Talon mercs and my game froze.

Third bug I noticed was in the quest power of the atom, it didn't register when I snatched those mentats. So I dunno that qualifies.

A few supermutants getting stuck on protruding rebar giving me the opportunity to headshot them with my reservists rifle and plenty of time to backtrack while leaving a trail of bottlecap mines like rose petals.

Really not that many bugs so far.

My biggest gripe is that no matter how much I steal or innocent civilians I slaughter it doesn't effect my character negatively because of the quest choices I made, so I have friggn hitmen after me every time I fast travel or exit an area. It's really annoying, however it does help me acquire some easy caps by pawning their equipment and armor at the local store. Of course if I was the evil ###### I want to be I would instead have bounty hunters after me like in Fallout 2 after I shot one too many kids for throwing rocks at me.

Good stuff about the game. While in fort bannister I ran into one too many mercs and took a couple hits of jet and med-x, next thing I know I'm addicted and in withdrawl after blasting them to kingdom come. Awesome! Just like the Fallout 2! It's a bad thing to become dependant on the drugs, but that doesn't make it any less cool that I did. In fact I want to test a few theories about radiation treatment and drug addiction next time I fire up the 360.

I want to see if they have the same effect as they did in fallout 2. At the very end of Fallout 2 when I was fighting the final boss took every drug on my person several times over and when I finished and decided to continue playing, my character was soo retarded he couldn't form two sentences to talk to the nearest NPC who candidly said "Get the ###### away from me you freak!"

I found myself wandering the wastes two days ago, just discovering random locations and such. The feeling of desperation kicked in since I hadn't fast travelled for hours and didn't want to. It was like damn I'm low on ammo and out of stimpaks I need to find a store quick!

Being good seems to be easier than being evil, being neutral is an ever-loving ###### of a task.

I hate that no matter how much ammo you have, after a few decent scrapes you find yourself looking at your supplies and wondering where the ###### all your bullets went. Awfully realistic, but not fun.

I like the building part of the game, where you find yourself sifting through trash trying to find the right parts you need to make the railway gun or another bottlecap mine. I am in desperate need of more lunchboxes =P

Later in the game you find cool stuff like the fatboy, metal armor, reservist's rifle, and assorted other goodies. Sadly though you need to find that exact same item to repair the one in your inventory. That or an assload of caps to drop at the nearest vendor to repair your equipment. My metal armor has become too expensive to maintain so now I'm just wearing Talon combat armor, which is plentiful to find given the bounty on my character's head.

I have yet to run into any of the enclave... lotsa supermutants, the brotherhood, assorted baddies and goodies but no enclave... Weird. First one I see is getting a mini-nuke up the ass and I'm pawning his power armor.

I find it weird that power armor isn't as strong as it was in the last two games... At fifty percent condition it only has about 23 armor total.... I know this because I looted a buncha dead brotherhood soldiers and repaired the armor. So at full condition it has a max of 46 armor? Fallout and Fallout 2, once you got ahold of some power armor you were the be all end all king of the wasteland. I see why they didn't want that in this game, still you have to find a way to get trained in power armor to be able to wear it... I have yet to run into the Brotherhood of Steel compound so I can fill out a job application though.

I've noticed so far that there is one party member you might possibly recruit, Jericho in Megaton. You have to have done something godawfully bad to get on this ######'s good side though.

So far I love it. It does freeze up on me, twice so far. There are some minor glitches and pet peeves, but similar to Mass Effect I am willing to forgive these small offenses in lure of decent story development and excellent gameplay.

As a fan of Fallout 1 and 2, this is a huge slap in the face. Terrible/dumb dialoge and dialoge "choices", terrible written quests, voice acting dire, awful intro, the hud, VATS, combat feels very clunky, and the gfx engine is quiite outdated now. And omg the radio is the worst/most annoying thing invented for a game ever, it makes me wanna smack Malcolm Mcdowell in the face with a clockwork.
In short, it feels like a very poor fallout amateur mod wrapped in Oblivion.

So, I did a bit of hacking this morning (a terminal controlling a turret)

selecting complete sets of <*>, {*}, [*], or (*) (* as in anything between them) will either refill your chances or remove an incorrect choice.

And there is a very high chance of not getting the proper password even if you supposedly can hack the terminal (it was a case of having 50 science and needing 50 sci, so my chances of getting the proper PW were very low). Took something like 8 tries.

    I do not like hacking.....

    HA!

    so.

I just poked around at a different terminal.

Each time you exit the terminal the PW changes.

    more poking:
I just checked a different computer. Got a pw that was 1/7 and every other choice had at least 2 of those letters in it.

I'm suddenly very excited about this game after watching a few videos/trailers and reading some posts and reviews.

<a href="http://www.canyourunit.com/" target="_blank">Can You Run It?</a> puts my laptop about 1/4th past minimum, between min and recommended. And video card seems to be the only thing that's below recommended. So since I'm willing to tune the graphic settings down, I guess it's good.

Propably gonna buy it on Steam soon.
