It's out now. Even though I liked the beta very much, I think I'll pass for now. 50€ is pretty much, especially for a game that I can't run properly <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />
But, who here has bought/will buy it?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I preorded for 22 pounds at amazon.co.uk and I will hopefully receive it today or tomorrow <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Bought it, I love it. The multiplayer's the same but better (except for the annoying reinforce bug they somehow managed to slip in) and singleplayer is pretty much a WH40K RPG. The SP is a bit repetitive, but co-op's a ton of fun.
Coop is fun? Maybe I'll give it a chance. I won a free copy of my game because of my shoutcasts and I played about four single player missions. They were fun but incredibly repetitive and I couldn't imagine doing it any more.
Got this a few days ago and fairly hooked on the coop campaign me and a pal started and have 20hours in so far. Repetitive only if you bang your head against the wall. The boss fights have been really fun and variable so far, and ofc all the equipment and bombardments that just wreak havoc on the battlefield with lovely physics.. The loadout screen and squadscreen really brings me back to xcom =)

I like the game too. Sometimes it gets a bit repetative. Set up devestator squad, send another squad forward (tactical or scout) to lure enemy squads towards the devestators, rinse and repeat. Every now and then my impatience causes me to get into some trouble (like I try to push forward too fast and get caught in between a few squads), but not often.
The boss battles I don't like, at all. They feel too much like a benny hill episode. Get everyone attacking it, then make them run away with a certain attack happens, then get them all set up again etc...
I got the game yesterday. I played a few 3v3 games with some friends, and tried the coop campaign. We only played a few levels, and it did seem quite repetive. Scouts advance cloaked, throw a demo charge at the garrisoned building, advance, repeat. Not saying it's un-fun, especially since I love coop games <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Has anyone heard anything about if there's a mapmaker for this in the release, or when/if one is due to be made available? I've just ordered the game but I think I'll probably boot up a mapmaker on the day I get it if there is one.
Wrong, a mapmaker is planned as DLC sometime in the future. Relic of course might be mistaken about their ability to get it made, as they often are, but current plans are to release a mapmaking program for us at some point.
Hmm, so it's not a definite. That makes me very sad, since I'd love to get a few more 3v3 and 1v1 maps made for the game. It's just right up my street, and it would be a logical step up from the 6 or so Advance Wars maps I've made.
Well, keep in mind Relic confirmed that they'll be releasing a mapmaker as DLC. It's just my own analysis that we may or may not actually get that DLC. Feel free to disregard what I said and just focus on the official line, which is "it's coming at some point."
That's good to know. I hope proper 2v2 maps can be made with it.
Surprised at the lack of maps- I always thought an RTS map doesn't take as much time as an FPS map as there's less things to focus on (lines of sight, item pickups, elevated areas, indoor locations etc). Unless it was a case of "crap SC2 has been announced release NOW" I must not appreciate the time it takes to make an RTS map.

It's usually a case of deforming some terrain to create different heights (although height doesn't seem to make a big difference in DoW, not even in line of sight from what I can tell), dropping in some cover and positioning the various types of resource nodes. Obviously it's a bit more tricky on the design front with all the testing and configuring of interdependant cover types, etc., but it's nothing major on the art front. Even on the design front if you mirror it, it's half the work. All of the walls, cover, structures and so on are prefabs.
Also there's no real amount of work on optimisation. All of the art is already built in with LOD models and textures. You might have to consider which props are 'expensive' and not spam too much of them in one area, but really it's nothing compared to assigning faces to be culled, considering line of sight (in 3 dimensions), working in powers of 2, creating your own hint brushes, etc.
Then there's very little work going into lighting as well. Basically there's no real reason for there being so few multiplayer maps. The ones they have are good but otherwise it's pretty pathetic.
I just think it's a case of them putting more effort into levels for the single-player, although I've heard even that recycles the same levels. Maybe they had some level designers quit on them during the project. Who knows?
I finally broke and ordered it and ti arrived yesterday, but I'm not gonna be playing it until I finish Mass Effect, which I finally got round to playing, and is too superb to put down for what's reputed to be mostly repetitive SP and a broken matchmaking system.

But Mass Effect has repetitive planets and underground labs....
I finally broke down from trying to do a 100% run and just did story. Story is awesome and the sides quests on the main planets are pretty cool, but most of the driving on planet find all artifacts stuff is boring as heck.

Despite all that, it's a fun game.
I vote for coop modes in strategy games!
