how about aliens having fart taunt (SE only!)? Imagine onos. Could be deadly for the marines - atleast we found a way to get the marine out of CC!

A sound would make more sense than a new skin for aliens, because aliens aren't really meant to be seen until they are within chomping distance. An added bonus would be to make the sound directionless to the marines, so they can't determine where it came from, just that a dedicated NS2 alien was nearby.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Now THIS is a good idea. Especially if it was something like a special or additional "chuckle." This way it doesn't compromise the aliens' ability to stay hidden unless they use the sound themselves.

    @the onos stomach:
    I lol'd. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
If it didn't take away from the atmosphere of the game I'd love it. That, and a large % of the playerbase just aren't good at/don't like to use the onos.

Seconded. An additional/different chuckle taunt for the aliens sounds like a perfect "recognition" type of goodie.

    Especially because you know it's the last sound many a newbie would hear. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I didn't like the idea of the black armor being exclusive to me and others who bought the SE (who are able to and happy to pay a bit extra to UWE). However, what's done is done but we should not push this further.

We wary of expanding the gap between old and new players. The learning curve is this game(s) is already enough of a gap. Extra skins/colors/marks for people who pay more is "cool" (read acceptable) to a very small degree but don't push it too far. The constellation thingy next to your name is probably as far as I would suggest to push it. Putting it into the gameplay with the black armor is already too much for me.

Think about it this way. Upon release the great majority of players (around 95%) are going to be running around with black armor. And people trying out NS for the first time with NS2 might feel singled out (beyond their general n00biness). Some might see themselves permanently marked as a n00b by this.

That's why I want to be able to play as normal armor and will do so most the time and would encourage others to do so Also, I think the black armor should eventually become earnable through achievements so that new players that come to us through NS2 will feel that even if they didn't pay more they can earn their red-stripe... err I mean black armor through dedication to the game. If indeed it is earnable then by all means use it all the time.

As long as its purely superficial and has zero impact on gameplay or balance.

Glowing eyes for example may be easier to see in the dark which would actually be a disadvantage for any player using it. Even the black armor may be a bad idea, a black skin will have a lower contrast against a dark background possibly making it harder to see.

This sort of thing makes a difference and does matter.

How about a dance-animation for Aliens?
Just imagine: Rine gets spitted to death by a gorgerush, all gorges stop, chuckle, rise to their hind legs and start a sexy belly dance. Visions like that keep me awake at nights...
Or a fade performing like Disco Stu while you try to knife him down. <3

    Everybody would love belly-dancing gorges!

I think it would of been a wise decision to make the special in game item given to the kharaa. During ns1 the teams were almost always stacked with marines while the aliens filled up slowly. Add in an awesome special marine armor I think you will find people gravitating even more towards marines. That's why the consti icon was a nice addition to the game. It didn't really affect peoples choices on what they may or may not want to play in game. It isn't to late you could go the route of a gold consti icon which people could show off proudly.

You can't have a special egg. In NS2 you don't have individual eggs, you use a glowy to choose one of the many eggs. That way marines can't single you out and pwn you while you're egging.

If so you might recognise my suggestion:
How about some stripes (maybe dark red) on the aliens' carapace.
Something like the change from this picture: <a href="http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/5515/warriorfg4.jpg" target="_blank">http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/5515/warriorfg4.jpg</a>

they should get a black skin too.

black marines sitting in a dark corner, are much harder too see than green ones.

    so for the aliens!
  • pontifexpontifex Join Date: 2009-06-10 Member: 67780Members, Reinforced - Shadow
I like the dow example. darker textures could denote a more "hardened" status amongst kharra. I think it should be along the lines of a texture tweak just to keep it simple. A darker more "weathered" appearance could fit with the issue of darkening the marines and making them tougher to see. In the end i like the idea of the scoreboard icon, but as the black marine armor has already been promised i don't see that happening.

i vote no for glowing eyes,

Yes for custom textures (darker textures) or spiky models,

it can be great for SE to get a little eye candy for Kharaa

Eh maybe I'm a little too nostalgic, but I would like to see the purple gorge icon come to fruition with an actual purple gorge (or different color; might look gross as purple) but I think a special gorge skin would be awesome.

    That's ridiculous.

    1) How can you call something Special Edition if there's nothing <b>special</b> about it? UWE are simply rewarding dedication and good intentions. And they picked a great way to do it. From a cynical business perspective, they made an extra 100% on an in-game skin and alpha access. Now <b>that's</b> profit. I don't blame them for it, I find it quite admirable. On the other hand, can you expect someone to pay double for <b>nothing</b>? Some surely would, I understand this (as the consties have proven), but would <b>98%</b> do that? (That's a rhetorical question. You and I both know the answer to that.)

    2) Everyone's going to be a new player, upon release. You could argue that people who played the original NS would find it more familiar. But then I would argue that anyone that plays first person shooters [with dedication] would find it more familiar, compared to those that usually don't. And anyone that plays pc shooters compared to console shooters would find it more familiar. And anyone that plays games compared to those that don't, would find it more familiar. You can't help this. It doesn't matter.

    3) Elitism is fine if it doesn't hurt anybody. People running around in cool black armour is not going to hurt anybody... well, okay, maybe the aliens... That hypothetical psychological effect is negligible, if at all relevant esp. past the first ten seconds. e.g. <i>Aww, why do they get a black armour and I have a green one? That sucks, I want- Oh CHRIST WHAT THE ###### ###### WAS THAT. SHOOT. ######. DIE MOTHERF- Goddamn! This game is awesome.</i>

    4) Permanently marked as n00b? Say half a year passes, the playerbase increases by a factor of 30. ALL of those <i>green</i> players are still <i>'green'</i> players? Despite being as good as the blacks? Ridiculous. At this point, there will be a very small proportion of black to green players, and the black will wear their colours with pride, while the green will be <i>envious</i> of the blacks. This is fine. You're rewarding the fans for doling out that extra <i>green</i>. They get to inflate their ego, as the exclusivity actually <i>grows</i> with the playerbase. But it doesn't hurt anybody. The most anyone can do is whine that they no longer have the opportunity to dress black, but myeh. UWE gets the funds to keep development going, fans get the cool black armour and a higher chance of the game coming out on time because Charlie didn't starve himself to death. It's a win-win situation. <i>Possibly the corniest paragraph I have ever written... Damn I'm good.</i>

    5) You're a regular saint. By that I mean, that's just naive and way too "goody-goody". Money makes the world go 'round. But... if it makes you feel better, you got the black because you helped the game come out (by paying the extra money to fund UWE; but let's pretend you got it because you earned it (which you did--by paying for it)).

tl;dr: NeoSniper is doing it wrong. l33t is still the new black.

I'm with you peeps that glowing eyes would be a bad idea balance wise...

Yeah a darker and/or "more weathered" texture for the aliens sounds like the way to go.

As to the guy complaining about elitism... relax. It's just like the constie icon, a way to get public recognition for your generosity and dedication.

They didn't promise anything for SE order when playing alien, so you shouldn't expect to much. I think most people ordered special edition to support UWE and to get access to alpha.

I agree that a skin for the aliens would be nice, but i would not be heart broken if it didn't happen. As all of us in this thread (or at least 90% of us) purchased the SE version for the alph... i mean *cough* to help UWE. They probably picked the black marine skin because it was easy to do. Aliens have 5 forms and would need special skins for each. Could be a pain, but who knows i do not develop video games :P

I would rather see the game (alpha) come out a day earlier than have the extra skins.... well o.k. maybe not. I LOVE this idea of having a way to show everyone that i love this game and am fully behind it! Like wearing my Air Force uniform at important events in my life. In the end though i wont be disappointed not to see the skins for aliens. It would be an AWESOME surprise but no way should anyone EXPECT anything more than what was already offered.

    *My two cents*
