well.. I know it's said at least 1000 times on here but: it's done when its done lol ^^. But yeah i would love to see some Alpha release this month, Especially the mapping tool ^^ There doesn't go one day by were i don't check my e-mail and the forum/news to see if there is news about the release hehe.
Alpha is probably a more realistic goal than a release or even Beta for this year. Then again, we haven't really seen anything yet so it's hard to know where UWE is on development. I am personally waiting for Steam support or any news regarding it before ordering, because all of my games are managed through Steam.
Based of the twitter feed it sounds like NS2 has a case of feature creep, the devs still don't have a solid idea of what the final product is going to look like, much less being close to implementing all the features. At this rate I would expect a Spring '10 release, maybe summer.

I think 'alpha' is going to be what NS2TR would of been. Meaning the tools and a running version of NS2 engine, walkaroundable but not playable as some people hope.
Just to get the community started while they finish the assets for real gaming experience.

I watched all the Dev Vids and they do show some in-game levels that look fairly complete, but then again they were all done so that they were showcasing individual aspects like the Hive or some other item. It's a much bigger question if there's a build that is actually everything all together and in a playable format.
I guess only the alpha and hopefully the beta will be released this fall. However, beta simply means the game is pretty much ready as NS is highly dependent on players to figure out if marines and aliens are balanced or not. Soon after the beta release the game will be completed in no time with hundreds of useful feedback we will give to them
I sincerely hope they release alpha or something on October 31. Not because I want to play that badly (although yes :P) but just so that all these nay sayers can eat it.

You managed to say everything that the community wants. Fans won't bother if release is delayed, as long as UW pronunciates something about that.

Now this is an instance where all I've got to say is "Worth waiting for". We all want the game super badly and I don't think arguing about how they don't have time for a Fall 09 release is going to get it done quicker, with the same amount of care and detail.
I'd rather an awesome, fully complete game than one that has to have 30 patches before it's what it should have been on release.

I too am waiting with a lot of anticipation. Everybody wants a slam dunk right out of the box. If you go and read the thread about the release in 2002 you will understand why some of us old timers aren’t fretting to much about when or how good it will be. The evolution of the game can be just as fun as the final product. “shoot for the moon, compensate for the lag.â€

I almost forgot that. But what about NS2 ADDONS?! Oh noes!
One would assume if they were going to RELEASE the game in the fall that beta would be 1-2 months BEFORE the end of fall, the alpha 1-2 months BEFORE that.
When they started selling NS2 preorders and advertised the game was going to be released in the fall, it gave the firm impression that the alpha was several weeks away. Now, its been several months and we still don't even have a 'date' on the alpha...its bad business.
Basically, there is absolutely no reason to delay the alpha release. The game doesn't even have to be playable, they should be releasing weekly builds.
I hope you weren't hoping for an actual alpha release. They'd be mad to do that with 95% of pre-orders being SE. Most of the people would play it and get angry if it were actually the alpha.
If anything I'd guess at the alpha likely being beta and beta being balance patching or whatever.

Take a day or two and setup an automated distribution system? Steamworks has built in beta tools specifically designed for frequent distribution and statistical feedback. If they didn't want all the bells and whitles, it would be trivial (they probably already have it setup) to just batch build and upload weekly.

I wasn't talking about the config so much as the pace change. They'd have to go from adding features to adding features and fixing bugs weekly. Lose two days to a couple bad bugs, and a speedy release schedule there will be bugs, and you're all ready looking at a half-effective release with another deadline coming up in a couple days. I was on a project doing near daily releases for a while and let me tell you, the product was not the better for it, even with all the direct feedback from the client. We're on two-week release schedules now and the output is about the same while the product is 10 times more stable. No, they should get the game to a relatively stable point before releasing so it will continuously improve over the iterative process. That will reflect better on the devs, be more enjoyable for the testers, and allow the testers to provide much more valuable information.
