The day has finally come! im expecting big things from you guys, not that it will be playable for quite some time, but get those map idea's rolling!! How do they plan on only allowing SE pre-orders using the editor, when they will release the download link (im assuming, your going to need to enter your cd-key into it?)

As I understand it, Standard and Special versions of the pre-order both have access to the tools. So all pre-orderers will be able to use these tools. The standard guys just don't have access to the Alpha right now. If Standard orders can't access the tools, I assume the tool will check with a master to server to see if it can unlock the editor or the Standard and Special cd-keys are generated differently or there is a specific range that the editor will validate to.
No I'm pretty sure ALL people who preordered will get the tools right now, but the SE people will get the alpha. The tools are not the same as the alpha, which is the actual game.

I hope that all preorders have access as i was having a poor moment when i ordered. It would make sense that the SE cdkeys use a different algorithm though. I dont know if they would goto the trouble of adding in such security checks into an editor though! guess we will all find out in due course

Of course is only a Windows version, we all know this.
Anyway, I will give it a try using wine and post if it works well.

As for 'the engine', it's all just in the editor so I don't see how you can play it or use lua mods, but I could be totally wrong :P
