Released on December 45rd in the year 35 came the first Mechwarrior game in over 8 years. Many of us were anxiously awaiting it ('us' being Mech nerds), but its release date slipped a year, and people were wondering if the game was going to fall into Mod Hell and just resort to releasing screenshots for eternity.
But they came through, and released the beta at the end of last year! Just three weeks ago, and seeing as how almost nobody in IRC knows anything about it, I thought I'd help spread the word.
I won't bother to describe it for people who don't know what Mechwarrior is (just look at the screenshots). However for those that do, this is an extremely dedicated and well-produced effort. It's visually beautiful and plays great. Action is intense and pretty much just like classic Mechwarrior, only this time, you can do more than pilot a Mech - there's tanks, aircraft, and battle armors in as well!
That's right. It's Mechwarrior, with a dash of Tribes in it. Jetpack carnage returns! Horray!
The game is a mod for Crysis - the original Crysis (a Crysis Wars port is in the works). So in case you actually bought that load about Crysis being a lousy FPS and therefore didn't get it... now's the time to rectify that mistake.

Approaching a hillside on Clearcut in an artillery tank, a core breach not far away silhouettes a Mauler and Timberwolf.

Battle armor shot from Marshes. LRMs streaking through the sky, an Owens fires its puny lasers at something that probably doesn't feel very threatened.

Extremity shot from cockpit of artillery Mad Dog. It's night, hence the frost on the window (extremely cold map at night, laser fun!). Crazy missile swarm is result of the fiery wreck's missile storage exploding.
<img src="http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/3820/screenshot0373.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Daytime Extremity shot, a Hollander gets close to a Raven, while a tank and Battle Armor pay zero attention to the carnage behind them.

Forty-fiftird?
It's the <b>future</b>. We're in <b>future dates</b> now. Jeez do I have to explain everything to you? Next you're going to ask about the month of Julambuary.
You mean like a Pedianalectomy? That's when they remove my foot from your ass if you keep complaining about <b>THE FUTURE</b>.
WE HAVE ROBOTS HERE.
Slow paced, but really fun if you're bored and want to play no hectic game.

Slow paced!?
I suppose that really depends on what you're playing as. Playing an entire match as pure Battle Armor is <i>intense</i>.
Thankfully a new Mechwarrior game is coming out soon.
I unfortunately didn't pick up the Crysis pack this holiday even at its outrageous price because I already have too many games to finish playing. Having another in my queue would just be silly. However, it looks awesome and I'm glad people are liking it. As they add on the polish (and more mechs) I hope it really catches on as a major mod game.
Also, major props for them doing the Battletech universe and not just pewpew giant mechs.
EDIT: also, Crysis eats my current computer alive

Just a warning for all of you considering this
1. Still not guarunteed to be compatible with Windows 7: <a href="http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_li=&p_sid=kN4sf6Sj&p_sp=&p_faqid=23528&p_iid=0&p_created=&p_prod=&p_cat=&p_cv=&p_pv=&p_prods=&p_cats=&prod_lvl1=&prod_lvl2=&prod_lvl3=&cat_lvl1=&cat_lvl2=&cat_lvl3=&p_hidden_prods=&p_search_text=&p_new_search=&p_accessibility=&p_page=&p_lva=23528&nextlink=" target="_blank">http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/e...8&nextlink=</a>
2. edit - seems I am wrong on this point. Their website be out of date.
Just a heads up, please don't turn this topic into a flame war about this. Just didn't want people to get burned (zing)
I bought dragon age through EA downloader and I don't have to have it running when I play. It just downloads and installs, as if from a disk. I'm by no means an advocate of the system, but it's worked for me twice now, giving me a significant saving in the process.

I also wish my rig didnt suck so bad that it cant even run crysis...
Go play a Battle Armor and tell me that :) It's much like Tribes, and jetting around dodging mech fire or a BA vs. BA fight can be intense. That's not to say the mech combat itself can't be intense as well.
Also what do other Euros have to do with it? Probably 40% of the servers are Euro...
This mod is a GREAT reason to finally buy Crysis, as it seems most people did, in fact, pirate it :p
Actually no, you're partially right. Dragon Age doesn't require EA downloader to be running, but Crysis does. My bad.

The MechWarrior series is notrious in Europe for being unable to sell.
That's weird, seeing as how Europe is the largest market for hardcore sci-fi PC games.
Maybe it's not sci-fi ENOUGH. But it has LASERS HOW MUCH SCI AND FI COULD YOU ASK FOR.
It also turns out that I totally kick ass at this game and I will kill you so hard it will cause death itself to tunnel through the multiverse and kill every other instance of you.
In slightly less interesting news, the "Mechwarrior 4 for free" that was announced like a year ago still isn't out, mostly because the incompetent clowns at MekTek decided to waste months building a custom loader for it.
Hey, you've got any idea how much expensive gasoline mechs use? :)
And I still can't get over the fact that you've never ever played a mech game before :D
EDIT: @ Sherpa. You'd have someone to play it with, but apparently I'm not cool enough for you...
The cave I live in is pretty deep.

Complain about it on the forums then, not to me :P I'm with you on that one; dying should give you a massive penalty to respawn and points - ejecting should kill you just the same but reduce these penalties.
Then again, you said you're a Battletech purist - so I guess that means the Clan team shouldn't eject ever :D
I've been playing this a fair bit. The time limit seems to be about 10 minutes too short, I usually just get the awesome mechs (Timberwolf ftw) just as the time runs out.
I can't remember which mech it is, but one of them has 4 clan short range missiles. So awesome. I beat an Awesome starting at 300m in this significantly cheaper mech.
--Scythe--
Yes, because it's an ejection, so whomever climbs inside after you isn't getting the benefits of a head (as the cockpit was blown open or off or whatever). A repair bay will restore your head. Repair bays will also restore side torso sections if the arm is still intact (I think) as well as the rear torso. They won't reattach arms or legs though.

10 minutes? An hour and a half feels too damn short :) I know there's only like three Australian servers, but the Europe Mechwars servers seem to have really long timers on them. Too bad I seem to crash every 15 minutes on Marshes.

My personal favorite fallback mech is the LBX Shadowcat, or as I like to call it, the Splattercat :D
Not true. The Clans abhor waste, is all. There's nothing wrong with ejection if the alternative is the pointless death of a (expensive to replace) pilot and possibly a functional Battlemech that might be recovered. They just have zero tolerance for cowardice, and a lot of Mechwarriors will jump to the conclusion you ran when you didn't need to.
Freebirths everywhere.
I'm actually all in favour of the Mech Lab never being implemented. Custom builds were uncommon, canonically, and it prevents the inevitable min-max'ing a PC game allows.

Zero, they use nuclear reactors :)
Of course there is always the danger of a meltdown and nuclear explosion, which is completely awesome to see in this game!
