The burster was like you describe the Jackhammer - the one time someone foolishly gets killed by it they instantly explode with rage. Eventually the anchor system got an overhaul, but up until that point it was ######. Unless you had the element of surprise on your side, it'd lose to a Reaver more often than it'd win. I repeat: The TR AA MAX, the Burster, a MAX suit that is useless against anything BUT aircraft, would frequently get murdered by Reavers. That left you with a target selection that included Mosquitoes and pretty much nothing else. And yes, I'll grant that the NC AA MAX was even worse. Well, about as good/bad as the TR AV weapon - you could scare aircraft off with the lock-on.
The Phoenix was garbage - against vehicles. But that included the Striker as well. Sure, we could hit vehicles, and we'd do damage faster than the Phoenix, but even so our output was still pretty pitiful. Good for scaring off an ATV perhaps. The Lancer was better, but still not something that gave infantry much of a fighting chance against vehicles, 1 on 1. What the Phoenix was great against was MAXes. Say you went outside with that vaunted Burster MAX to keep the air chavs away (desperately hoping the air chavs consisted of Mosquitoes only), within seconds a Phoenix would slam into you. That's a third of your health gone. If there's more than a single guy with a Phoenix out there, you've lost two thirds of your health and you're now scrambling to get the ###### inside before a third Phoenix ends you. Not. Fun. At least the Striker and Lancer required that the user expose himself to return fire in that situation, and it was possible to take cover from those. You couldn't take cover from a missile that flew around corners.
Ever since Hamorad started using Village People and music from flemish kids' shows for his Planetside videos, I can't take videos with heavy metal seriously anymore.

I still talk to him from time to time. Love planetside forever.
The rage of spawning into a cloud of plasma and emp as your tower gets hacked vs the lols of driving a Sunderer off a huge cliff and not even getting scratched due to PHIZZIKS vs the exuberance of being part of a big vehicle convoy rolling over base after base before the enemy has woken up...
Oh god. The balance arguments. I remember those. I wasted probably days of my life in the mistaken belief that I could fix the glaring imbalances in the game. The evidence was on my side. I had spreadsheets. I had reams of text all meticulously checked for spelling and grammatical errors. I truly believed that if I could just get the developers to read my thread, they would surely agree with my conclusions, and fix what needed to be fixed.
Bah, that missile launcher (Devastator or something?) was bull###### anyway.
Also that video brings up an important lolfail part of Planetside - third person view. What the ######.
While we can all agree that the VS was overpowered as sin at the end of the game's life... I think we can all appreciate the irony of that given the state of the VS at the game's launch :D
The Beamer. The Pulsar. The MagMower and WeedThresher (the only thing their vehicles were good for was running people over). The Lasher that would damage you and your allies.
Also I don't know why you're complaining about the sniper rifle. I liked it. It was hard as hell to use and seriously lacking in the 'BULL****' factor of traditional sniper rifles. And one-shot killing infiltrators was hilarious.
Hell, even sneaking up on an enemy as an infiltrator only to suddenly go BLARGH and die because a friendly sniper shot you was hilarious.
The problem with sniper rifles in most fps games is that they're used at "knife-fighting" distances. Most games simply have far too small environments for sniper rifles to be plausible. Planetside had the long distances needed. In Planetside the sniper rifle didn't kill people in one shot, but it had the ability to hit beyond the range of any other weapon (with no damage fall-off), which made it useful. You could simply shoot at people who had no means of returning fire. And it wasn't a Quake railgun either. You couldn't snap off accurate shots on the move. You couldn't shoot accurately a split-second after you stopped moving. You had to stop moving, crouch, and zero in your aim. You couldn't even jerk your view around or the cone-of-fire would bloom for a moment and spoil your aim. And people complained. They said it was useless. But it wasn't, it was just a highly specialised tool rather than an all-purpose weapon for every situation. That's what sniper rifles are, dip######s.
But that was the Bolt Driver. I think the one Nil_IQ complained about is the Scout Rifle, which was added... a year into release I think? That one was indeed ######. I think it was an attempt to strike a compromise between the Bolt Driver and the assault rifles or something? It ended up just completely sucking in either role though.
Also, someone from here got me an invite to their Outfit when I started playing. Was that you, Nil_IQ? It was called Blood Legion, a TR outfit on Werner, the euro server. I can't quite remember who got me that invite - he left the game almost immediately afterwards, so we never really got to play together.
My major regret is never having seen nor taken part in a huge air drop of tanks by 30 or 40 Loadstars... I'd almost rather be on the receiving end of such a thing. That and those awesome trench works and bunkers outside of bases weren't focused on enough. :/
I remember surprising more than a few defenders and helping fellow gal droppers get inside, by shoving a lightning in the back, and bailing onto the roofs and walkways with them. Sure, I despawn semi quickly, but not fast enough that I can't take out a few with the firepower.

I remember my outfit taking a gal and the pilot being drunk and chanting "I CAN DO IT I CAN DO IT" over and over on teamspeak for about 4 minutes of flight time without explaining what he meant by "do it".
Turns out by "do it" he meant "fly through the gate to an enemy base during an attack with a full galaxy".
he couldn't do it
I miss how bad ass the marauder used to be I remember you could blast full speed through a base, fully loaded and manned, and hit mines/take constant small arms fire all the way through and still get out alive, all while being covered in bullet holes and having enough kills to match.
Then they nerfed it, game went down hill after that.
My outfit had a good skyguard driver. I was a good skyguard gunner. Together, we'd terrorize the skies - from the ground. There are few things as satisfying as enveloping the air chavs in a loving cloud of deadly shrapnel. It only got better when the Reavers started going after us, because the Skyguard had the agility (with a good driver) to evade the rocket barrages and the firepower to TEAR THEM A NEW ONE. Good times.

Yes, I meant the scout rifle, the bolt driver was great.
It might have been me lolfighter, I was in Blood Legion for a while. That was after the game was already lolruined though; most / all of my outfit mates were driven off after the BFR fiasco. Like about 90% of the community. My "real" outfit was Battle Marines of Chaos, lead by that crazy Norwegian ###### Ostekake. Some of my best moments in Planetside were due to his ability to yell at people over the mic until they did what he said. Then he left (with the introduction of the BFRs), and wasn't the same when he came back. Less "crazy ######" and more plain crazy.
I remember at one point he did a global asking everyone to meet up in the sanctuary. When people do this you presume its for a big raid. When everyone turned up, he announced the CR5's were "on strike". He basically told everyone on TR Werner to go ###### themselves for not listening to the CR5s and attacking the wrong targets e.t.c. You can probably see the flaw in this little tirade, aside from it being infantile... he was ###### at the people who had come to the sanctuary. The people who had listened to him. I think that was when I joined Blood Legion.
I do remember inviting someone from the forums and then having them kill a BFR with a Cycler in their first day. Was that you?
Don't think so. Sounds like trying to do that would have been memorable no matter which way it turned out. All I can remember from my first day is ferrying a Prowler around in a Lodestar for some reason. Or BEING ferried around in a Prowler in a Lodestar. It's a little fuzzy.
Planetside was already past its prime when I started playing it, but we still had some good moments. And Ostekake is definitely a name I remember. He was still one of the better CR5s. Not that that meant much.
I think the CR5s were a mistake. Basing the rank on grind rather than accomplishment meant that good leaders couldn't quickly percolate to the top, and that all being a CR5 proved was that you had played a lot as a squad leader, which requires you to invite randoms to your squad and little else. Competence and CR5 weren't mutually exclusive qualities, but there was no connection between them either. Also, it didn't help that a lot of the people who went through the grind to CR5 didn't care one whit about leading, they just wanted orbital strike.
I wonder how well a community-based system would have worked: No CR5s or global messages at all, but allow custom chat channels. You get a group of people who quickly assert themselves as people with tactical and strategic insight and with the will to lead, and people who actually see the point in listening to orders and are willing to do so will join their channel, which then acts as a global channel, but with competent leaders rather than the gormless ######wit that was the average CR5. The leadership corps can police themselves and purge the occasional lackwit from the group, and if they end up just being generally stupid and useless people will leave their channel and go to the competitor that will inevitably spring up. Wish I could run an experiment like that and see how it works out.
Edit: Oh, And One More Thing: Ostekake's "nobody follows orders" neurosis illustrates another problem: Planetside wasn't the military. You pay for the game, you pay for the monthly subscription - you don't have to pay lip-service to a bunch of twats who think they're important, too. As much as Planetside was a game that needed leaders, using the military model of "this guy is your superior, you have to listen to him" just doesn't work. A leader has to earn his authority. In the eyes of the populace, the CR5s hadn't earned anything. Especially not when the guy who's allegedly your superior talks in leetspeak and uses the global channel to proclaim how much he is banging everyone's mom.
