By the way, am I the only one who's analyzed this PS2 situation? By which I mean speculated wildly?
Let me put it this way. Planetside, while maybe not an outstanding commercial success, was also far, far from a failure. Any game that garners two expansion packs and is still somewhat alive even after all these years must've been making money. What is known though is the wildly fanatical fanbase it had. It's like the Big Lebowski of video games.
So, here we are, on the brink of Planetside 2... and we're only now JUST hearing of it? Seriously? They're opening up for beta, lots of screenshots, and yet to date the only place I've heard even a whisper about it is... this forum.
<!--quoteo(post=1833446:date=Feb 18 2011, 09:24 PM:name=lolfighter)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (lolfighter @ Feb 18 2011, 09:24 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1833446"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Or it'll just lead to damaging two targets rather than killing one.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Yeah thats typically how it goes haha
We've heard whispers and teasing well before now, just not got any actual content. I'm not sure why this is a problem, most people get really upset when release dates are announced and pushed back so this way means less risk..
I have made ALL the wildest speculations. All of them. Mostly to Stickman though. And yes, the entire thing smells fishier than a VS stuck in his armour for three days.
This guy right here is clearly wearing VS armour. He has the fish-helmet, the ridged shoulderpads, and the yellow visor. There's a Magrider in the background. He's holding a Lasher. He's on the Core Combat boxart as a VS. Why in the name of all that is holy did they think he would pass as a TR? I know our colours are the best, but he's not even making an effort. He lacks zee goggles for one thing.
Just had to put that out there. If you were hoping some more information about PS:Next had been posted then... well... I'd be lying if I said I were sorry.
They're basically the Judean People's Front / the People's Front of Judea. They both hate everything that is good and nice, but they disagree on the exact way you're supposed to hate everything that is good and nice, so they kill each other. Which, ironically, is a good and nice thing.

The TR is a one world government thing that rules Earth and presumably any other space colonies they have (I don't know how many they have or what) and is apparently an oppressive nazi-esque dictatorship or something.
Anyway, the planet (and later planets) that make up planetside was another TR colony that was through a wormhole! In SPAAAAAACE. And then the wormhole collapsed and the colony was isolated. The NC rebelled against the TR because, y'know, rebelling against dictatorships was cool even before Tunisia and Egypt did it. Then the VS split off from the NC and/or the TR because they worship and/or are very fond of the technology the aliens left behind and were annoyed that the TR/NC seem wary of using it so much. That's why the VS tanks hover and junk.
Your version is sort of correct, Stickman, but allow me to fix the parts that are full of NC brainwashing and propaganda: <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The TR is a one world government thing that rules Earth and presumably any other space colonies they have (I don't know how many they have or what) and rules mankind with a firm but benevolent hand, enduring for longer than any empire of man has ever done, and securing peace and prosperity for everyone.

The VS began a terrorist campaign against the TR because they were powergreedy warmongers who could not bear to live in a society of equality and peaceful cooperation, and who wanted to keep all the Vanu technology discovered on the planet for themselves so that they could conquer mankind and crush everyone under their jackbooted heel. Then the NC split off from the VS because some of the aforementioned powergreedy warmongers disagreed with each other over who would be the supreme dictator and god and emperor for life.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
This doesn't just smell fishy, it smells like an entire dead aquarium. Launch late first quarter? Early second quarter? And what have we seen so far, a few screenshots? A few tweets from Smedley, who was heavily badmouthed by the Planetside community? I have been suspecting some sort of silly prank for a while, but I am slowly getting ready to openly admit that. Oh wait, I just did.
I dunno, for-profit companies don't play pranks on potential customers. But what the hell is going on here? This has NONE of the characteristics of a game launch. By now I'm pretty much expecting SOE to just shrug their shoulders and go "eh," and that's the last we'll ever hear of it.
Sounds good. I only had a few problems with planetside though- I hated the exact symmetric gear/vehicles most sides had except for a very small number of faction specific things if I remember.
Things i'd like to see in planetside 2:
-Customizable Armor, clan decals, custom colors, much cooler and artistic looking armor up to todays standards -Real flying model -Real cities or perhaps just one giant planet with enchanced environments, not just replica bases scattered around cityless terrain. -Battlefield Bad Company 2 level sound effects

The flying is something they've specifically said has been completely overhauled, and the bases all being the same was one of the major complaints with the first game, so I'd expect to see that fixed as well.
The problem with too much faction-specific gear is that it leads to even more balance headaches. Giving one empire a super-shotgun, another a laser shotgun, and another a minigun and counting them all as the same category of gunwas just ridiculous.

Let me start by introducing myself. My name is Andrew Sites and about a month ago I joined the Planetside Next development team as the Executive Producer. While I may be new to Planetside, I’ve been around the block a few times here at Sony Online. I’ve worked in production on several SOE projects, including EverQuest, EverQuest II, Free Realms and most recently was the EP on Clone Wars Adventures. But enough about me, let’s talk about Planetside.
While combing through the Planetside forums, I can see that you’re not just amped about the promise of a sequel being developed, but even more so, you want some details. With Planetside now approaching its 8 year anniversary, it’s still easy to look back and see just how it set the bar for Massively Multiplayer FPS games. It was fun, fast-paced and most importantly, it offered truly MASSIVE FPS combat that hasn’t been recreated since. When we started designing Planetside Next, our goal was to build upon the original foundational elements that made it unique, while focusing heavily on the large-scale combat that set it apart from the competition. We’ve got some big shoes to fill, but as we begin unveiling the details, I think you’re going to be VERY excited to see what we have planned.
As you know, Planetside Next was announced by Smed via Twitter about a year and a half ago. Since then, the development team has been pining away on a new graphics engine, building art assets and designing new content. To support our ongoing development efforts, the team has increased in size significantly over the past several weeks. We’ve also brought back several team members from the original Planetside art, design and code team, as well as a ton of other talented, experienced MMO and FPS developers – many of whom I will begin introducing to you in my next update.
To say that the team and I are excited would be an understatement. Over the coming weeks and months, you can expect to receive a lot more detail about what we have in-store for PSNext. Much of this information will be presented to the PS community exclusively, because frankly, if your passion for the original didn’t exist, I wouldn’t be typing this.
Planetside set the bar for the Massively Multiplayer FPS market 8 year ago and we look forward to setting it again.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> "Soon we will have information on how soon the information will come."
Yeah, this doesn't sound like an early- to mid-2011 release at all. But let's be honest, none of us believed that anymore anyway.
But this is good news. If they brought the game out now, with zero marketing, zero hype, it'd just flop. Again. The biggest problem I see right now is a lack of internal communication at SOE. What possessed Smedley to proclaim a release in the first half of 2011 when that was plainly not going to happen?
Not just PlanetSide, for that matter. <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Firstly, as a Station Account holder in good standing, you will receive 45 days of game time (30 days plus 1 day for each day of the outage) added to your Station Account. That's what I remember from the storyline!
And also TR suck and NC are the best.
