Lets not argue about this too much. It's a simple matter of each to his/her own. Some people will prefer Combat, others will prefer classic. Both have a right to exist.

I think it's clear that there's enough people interested in playing a combat variant. Great how the moddability of the game is being used in such a good way.

I do agree with this, I'm looking forward to having the full modding support in so they can do clientside stuff for this mod too.

And the worst thing about this is that Combat's siren song appeals to me too. As I said before it IS fun. But it is a different game and the problem that we saw with it in NS1 and that I'm seeing again already is that it fragments the community, same as DLC does on many other games. Fragmenting the community isn't a good thing even if the other mode is also fun. Mods are good, but you need to have the pure experience available as well (because that's what UWE is selling), and although many mods actually don't have too much effect on fragmentation (Armory Heal, Lerk Lift from NS1, Roll the Dice, Extra Levels), Combat does, and so I'm opposed to it being introduced when the community is already so small because I think it does more harm than good at this point.

Ever think that maybe if combat didn't exist (NS1 included) players would just go play a different game instead of classic? Crazy, I know.

I played mostly Combat in NS1. I would play Classic from time to time, but the communities I was a part of were mainly combat. I like Classic mode, but hoping to see Combat come back is the main reason I purchased NS2. Both are fun, but I like a more relaxed gameplay that Combat gives.

Yes, it's possible but in the case of NS1 I know the while the introduction of Combat did bring a larger community to the game it seemed that after it's introduction there were actually less people playing Classic than before Combat existed.

Combat is a Pandora's box though, when they opened it for NS1 there was no closing it. I know it will be coming to NS2, there is no fighting that. I am just worried the community is not large enough yet to support two gamemodes.

I don't think combat mode killed NS1 at all. If you only had 4-6 people in a server combat mode was the clear choice to vote for.

Classic mode thrives on having larger player counts but becomes more pointless and boring with lower player counts. Combat mode at least lets people practice aim and etc when player counts are low on servers. I think it's overall a good thing.

And there are a lot more people who play NS1 now. We almost always have around 30 people in the evolvens server and there are other servers and communities being made as I speak. The game may not be as thriving as it once was but at least we always have a server to play some NS1 in. I don't personally like a lot of the NS1 community because they are very impatient and pretentious, but the game itself is so good I am willing to play and ignore all that.

I often load up NS1 every now and then through the week to tide over my impatient appetite for the complete version of NS2.

Am I the only one that remembers the game is currently in beta? The reason that we have a small community is that it is still relatively unknown throughout the gaming community. I truly doubt that when release comes, combat will have any real effect on finding a game.

Edit:
I personally played both modes, but preferred classic. I never really had a hard time finding classic games until much later in the NS1's life. As coming back as a mod I would be interested in seeing how it is, but it might also deter me from having to get the thing installed (Though I'm sure it isn't hard, I'm just speaking theorhetically).

I'm glad to see a functional combat mode in NS2, as it was always a great way to practice basic shooting/movement skills without the pressure of a full, classic game. In particular, its very useful to practice the lesser researched weapons/classes such as flamethrower and onos.

I always felt combat drew players away from classic by giving them a more instant gratification fix without as much thinking and effort as the classic game required.

Although it has it's place when you don't feel like putting out as much effort to succeed in classic, and just want to play around with the toys, it does end up having a lowest common denominator effect where the majority of players seem to start drifting over into the easiest game mode, losing out on the more deep satisfication of the classic game's teamwork and strategy.

Ring the requiem bell, NS2 is dead!

1dominator1:

Nonsense!

Tons of people, myself included, haven't been playing but are excited for new content (Exo Suit), optimization, and other community mods

I won't even consider "NS:2 is dying / dead" speak until I break a mechanical leg off inside an Onos

If you know what I mean
