I have not tried overclocking yet but currently my game runs fairly well. I have all settings turned up at 1600 x 900, at this point my video card seems to be the bottleneck. I have not had a chance to play on Summit yet due to lack of open servers with under 100 ping, but I played a round on mineshaft. Not sure what the 16 was about, must have been a moment where my PC stuttered while respawning or going through a phasegate (that seems to happen sometimes).
Overall the game runs quite well. My CPU temps are very low even with the crappy stock cooler and stock thermal paste, about 41ºC while in game. I'll overclock a bit till I hit high 50's then mess with some better thermal paste, if that doesn't cut it maybe upgrade the cooler and see if I can get to 4.5 - 5 ghz. I'm not going to push it too hard though since this thing is already a beast and if I fry it, I might have to use my head as a battering ram through the drywall.
One side note - has anyone else noticed that FRAPS makes your mouse tweak out while playing? I can't aim worth a crap while its running. Its like my laser mouse has a hair stuck under it, my aim jumps around erratically. I alt+tabbed out and shut down fraps and suddenly everything was fine again. I tried again just to verify it was fraps and indeed, the same thing happened after a restart. Any ideas?
a steady 60 FPS probably won't be feasible without a recent Intel CPU. Perhaps further optimizations past release will yield an average 60 FPS for AMD CPU owners, but the underwhelming single-threaded performance of the newly-released Vishera CPUs provides a bleak future for AMD users. Intel CPUs will continue to have an FPS advantage over Deneb, Thuban, Bulldozer, Piledriver, and most likely even Steamroller. Speaking of i5, my 3570k and new components have just arrived, and I expect my mind to be blown completely. :)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

What's funny is you maxed your proc out to 5GhZ, you have a top of the line graphics card and 16GB of RAM... and you only just about get above 60FPS constant.
Sure puts the minimum/recommended specifications in to context and when people with computers that can play Farcry 3, Call of Duty Black Ops with 100FPS to only find that same system can only achieve 40fps max, 30fps average in NS2.

Can you try to follow the benchmark instructions on page 1 and post the results?
I just wanted everyone to know that I have updated the Benchmarks thread for Gorgeous Build 240. It is now recommended that you either benchmark on ns2_summit or ns2_descent (yay, new map). Also, for those who may be playing on laptops or lower-end systems it is recommended to either enable everything (high visual detail) or disable everything (low visual detail) in your graphics settings.
We have had several "prospects" posting in the new player forum wanting to know whether or not their system can handle NS2 and what kind of FPS to expect. This thread should be able to help them if a lot of people continue to post their benchmarks, so keep it up and thank you for making this thread useful.
Also, for those who may be playing on laptops or lower-end systems it is recommended to either enable everything (high visual detail) or disable everything (low visual detail) in your graphics settings.
I don't understand this, could you elaborate? It's better to run the game with everything maxed or off than with some settings on?

P.S. I have no idea what Texture Streaming does, so as far as I am concered it can either be on or off.

- CPU: intel I7 930 @ 2.8 BUT this one WILL turbomode to 3.0ish when NS2 runs.
- GPU: nvidia gtx 570 > Gainward GeForce GTX 570 1280MB Phantom. Big air cooling + fans on it, so it may run at higher then nvidia default. I didnt check.
- OS: Windows 7 64bit, fully patched. (specifics, I always run with dep on. steam also runs aslr. Ns2 does not. I work & game on a limited user as much as possible, including with ns2.

Gorgeous 240 build. ns2_summit.

This isn't much of a useful benchmark atm since I couldn't get a full 20 minute game, they were all short stomps and there wasn't really all that much going on, but I do want to ask about the behavior of this graph.
In particular, I'm seeing both a ceiling at 60fps which I expected, and a floor at 30fps which I can't explain.

Looks like you have vsync on to me.
Yup looks like vsync all right. Disable that. But I have to say you have that CPU and you are barely utilizing it's potential. 2.6 GHz? Dude get it to at least 4.0 GHz+ if you can.
Honestly, this thread is useless. At least the method of acquiring all this data is. There are A LOT more variables that could affect ones FPS individually. The only way to accurately gather data across machines is to have the same exact animations playing. Regardless if maps are the same, tons of things will affect your FPS, such as number of players and structures on server/map, number of players and structures visible, etc.

There are a lot of potential variables, but I've been going over the data from this (and the demo benchmark thread) and am finding that the most significant factors are the highest clockspeed of your CPU and the 'power' of your GPU (as measured by its Passmark rating). However, the uncertainty is huge because of the small sample size.

I suppose we could create a demo but doesn't it break from release to release? In other words, if I make a demo from build 241 will it work with build 242? I was under the impression that it would not.
I think Hugh should start a new benchmarking thread for every new build released while closing old ones to keep information/results separate. Then he can list the important information the developers need from our benchmark runs(specific hardware/benchmark results).
Hugh can then have the team create a specific demo able to work with future build releases for consistency. In the end, I feel it should give them a clearer picture to work with.

Yup I made one before but demos do not work with different builds this was 239:
Since not much has changed since 239 I did not make a new one. However according to the dev posts performance is being focused on so maybe 242 will bring big changes in performance. So maybe I or someone else could make one for it.

The above is more for the "standardized" test. I'm including another map just to get a more holistic picture

- Mem: Corsair 3x2048MB DDR3 1600 TR3X6G1600C8D (this is tripple channel!)
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7, latest non beta bios.
- Monitor: Dell P2211H (connected by dvi).. I bothered to install the monitor in windows, so its detected as this one and not plug&play.
- Resolution: Full HD (1920*1080)
- Ping: around 30-100 max. Usually more to 30.
Gorgeous 240 build. ns2_summit.
Server: [FR] LEs Tigres Blancs #1 (this one was not to full or empty, was around 18 slots. newbie friendly, unmodded so far I know.)
benchmark: Full, all on max, even the stuff i normally do not max out for performance. (my minimal fps help more then expected)
Frames Time (ms) Min Max Avg
58281 1200000 31 77 48568
See attached benchsummit240full_1.png for details.
2nd benchmark was NOT fully run as I continued the same match roughly 30 seconds after the full bench ended. Same settings.
Frames Time (ms) Min Max Avg
22787 497316 31 72 45820
See attached benchsummit240full_2.png for details.
unlike my normal habbit, this is ran in fullscreen as the benchmark requires, instead of fullscreen windowed mode.
question, why do you play with AA off? it has almost negligible impact on performance

Joined the match (marine) about a third of the way in. 600 seconds in saw both teams with all tech, onos, exos etc. From about 990 seconds there were two marine pushes attacking a hive then at about 1100 seconds came the final alien assault.

I suppose we could create a demo but doesn't it break from release to release? In other words, if I make a demo from build 241 will it work with build 242? I was under the impression that it would not.
Hugh can then have the team create a specific demo able to work with future build releases for consistency. In the end, I feel it should give them a clearer picture to work with.
Yup I made one before but demos do not work with different builds this was 239:
http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/127867/benchmark-demo-thread/p1
Since not much has changed since 239 I did not make a new one. However according to the dev posts performance is being focused on so maybe 242 will bring big changes in performance. So maybe I or someone else could make one for it.
