So what's with all the animosity towards new players?

All the time I see hateful remarks towards new players, particularly those who signed up after the TotalBiscuit videos circulated. Teams losing games and players blaming it on "stupid TB people" Are you guys gonna be the same way when the game goes retail? "those stupid retail people?" Give 'em some time, they'll learn. New people are good for the game. If servers are empty, you can't play.

I admit I signed up after the TB videos came out. I would have joined sooner but I honestly forgot this game even existed. I was a veteran of NS1 for a long time (in fact it's the reason I have a Steam account from 2003 when NS1 went to version 2.0 and was Steam only) I followed development of NS2 for a while but eventually just completely forgot about it. Then suddenly this video about NS2 comes out, says I can play the beta RIGHT NOW if I pre-order so, here I am.

Anyway, can we stop this hipster nonsense? Pretty please?

I only have a problem when they join a fully populated server and jump into command chair without knowledge of basics of the game. You make the rest of the server suffer because you don't know how to play. I suggest joining a less populated server and playing around there before joining servers that are constantly full just to screw over a team because you just want to play around. We are all here to have fun and while losing is part of the game, I would like to suggest courteously from new players not to jump right into the comm/hive to screw around but to play several matches and get to understanding the game before you try commanding.

So, that being said, let me say this as my final note; I have no problem with newer people that have never commanded before jumping in the chair/hive, it's good practice, even on full pop servers have no problem, BUT if you don't know the basics of the game and understand what needs to be done, then don't piss everyone off just for you to play around. It's very selfish.

BTW to define what I think is a new player; if you don't know the name of the structures, then you are a new player.

It's understandable though, I mean all of the sudden instead of running to the res node people run in circles. It can be frustrating if you don't remind yourself of the influx of new people, you just gotta remember that they aren't trolling or suddenly turned dumb, they're just new.

People learn really fast though. Just a couple of days and you can't tell the difference.

Regardless, regards.

I welcome a larger community, especially where most of the new players have been polite, modest, curious and courteous when their questions were answered. Sadly, there were a few vets who were rude and disparaging as you say.

I think the community was a bit overwhelmed with new players. Here in Oz, we went from 1x18 slot server being populated during prime time to all 3 of our best servers being full nearly all the time. It was a huge change. Many of the vets had strategies and tactics built up over months/years of playing and those ideas about the game were made unworkable overnight because of the sheer number of new people who didn't understand all that history.

I mainly play the European servers, so that might be why, but I have honestly never seen anyone complain about new players ruining the game. There has been frustration about a group of marines not being able to take down a single skulk, or that your teammates aren't every where that needs to be defended all the time. But these comments could be aimed at old players as well, and is more a sign of people being passionate about winning the games.

And as people have mentioned, being commander is hard. If you don't have a microphone, and aren't willing to respond in chat, people will be upset about new players not communicating clearly, and even more about them being slow, and maybe selecting strategies that isn't mainstream.

Not sure what servers you've been playing on but sounds like you should find a different one (Hard I know right now but more will become available).
I have yet to witness anyone saying anything along the lines of "Stupid TB people". I am very grateful for TB and all the players it has brought because it will help the game survive.

No racist, or anything, but it seems to be a much, much bigger problem on the US side. I'm on EU servers too, and there's just no real animosity. Like, atleast, not swearing at people or even calling them noobs. You can spot disappointment and frustration sure, but other than that, not much.

It's NS, NS has an extremely xenophobic community, which is the majority of the reason I don't play NS1 any more, it stopped being fun once people stopped being fun to play with.

The attitude is that if you haven't been playing the game constantly and mastered every aspect of it, you're an idiot and shouldn't be allowed to play. If you command and deviate from the pre-established strategies, you're a noob and shouldn't be allowed to command. If you're a player and don't immediately know what to do, you're a liability to the team and shouldn't be wasting money(/have money wasted on you if you're in NS1).

I don't know why this became the case in the first place, but I'd say most of the reason it's the case in NS2 is because NS2 is played by a large chunk of the NS1 community, and it was a major problem there too.

Came across a comm the other day who was like this... you either play a gather or join a clan. Otherwise, it is a public server where anything can happen and you just have to accept that.

Last night this guy was yelling and raging hard at each of the Comms that lost us every game. He was funny because he was serious. He was telling people if they're going to comm, they need to learn privately on another server and once they have the hotkeys memorized, they can comm a small sized game until they're good enough to comm a full game. This guy repeated himself several times, it was sooo funny, I would of recorded it if this actually didn't happen so often.

I have gotten frustrated with the new people but I always remain nice. I may get a harsh tone, and say "Get out of base, GO SAVE THAT HIVE!" I do not complain to them. When I got a server with a bunch of new people, they usually refuse to comm. Then the all sit in base and do nothing, or sit in the hallway outside of base and do nothing. I have the hardest time getting them to do anything. I use their usernames but the blatantly ignore me. That is where a think I lot of the hate comes from.

I have had good games with new people too. The new people who are willing to learn and do something. They build an armory when I ask them to, they attack the hive I tell them to. They may not be able to kill anything but they at least try.

Even though they may do noob things I think it would be a good idea to be polite to them. I don't want new people not telling their friends about how fun the game is because some OG decided to be a ######. I really want to see this game get more popular so the devs can keep improving the game.

Playing on European servers, don't hate new players. Most of the time people are afraid of the comm chair. The only reason i don't like this wave is because of all the conclusions they make having played the game a couple of days. Mainly the conclusion that all good ns2 players are cheaters.

ps.: a lot of them are kids, and i hate kids.

I don't like seeing that as well. Then again I had many matches where it was quite the opposite, we let the new guy play the commander and showed him how it worked and so on.

The hardcore simply has to realize that having this game the way we want it costs something. Either we all pay 200€ per copy, so it's a game for the NS1 Hardcore group, or we simply have to invite more players who pay for the game.

I just don't get it why some get so ridiculously offensive when, no matter how stupid, a new player comes into play. It's not even a released game yet, it's not with any statistics whatsoever.

I rather have a fun, but smashingly bad game with some new gamers than an overly offensive atmosphere in every game.

Anyway, people always use anything to hate and use for their fail excuse ;-)
People are new and thats good, i like to see so many full server and nice people (instead of aggresive fools, like your example say...they use that "total biscuit" as insult...omg)

So: WELCOME NEW PLAYERS! I am glad you are a NS player now :-)

Being commander takes time to learn and nobody starts off as an expert. I don't know what the total biscuit videos are but I don't see what that has to do with individuals that play the game. You should be happy they're supporting it and filling the servers.

It would help also if the NOOB servers came back up. That way when people play in that server people have an understanding what level of gameplay is at.

I don't mind new comms but I wish more would acknowledge the fact that they are new when they jump in the comm chair.

I don't mind the new players.
And I'm sure that UWE doesn't mind the money they're swimming in.
Most of the new players are eager to learn and trying out the game, having some fun.
But because this is such a team-work oriented game and generally a new concept of gaming, RTS/FPS, theres a lot to learn.
Noobs will be noobs and I don't mind noobs, except when they're obnoxious XBOX360-type ######.
You know the type I'm talking about.
The kind of noobs that rage at everything and everyone and blame everyone for everything and yell/type profanities.
Luckily I haven't noticed many of these types of players.

Also I've never heard the term "TB Players" being used.
But I do know what you mean.

I am sorry, and I have cooled down a lot on newer players. This will not stop to annoy me, at any stage of this games release.

Gotta love the biscuiteers lol mostly a great community of fast learning players, tho there are one or two incredibly nooby hard to teach players.

I spent a whole game teaching a guy how to alien comm, next match he goes comm again, and doesnt even cyst to the rts, whole game didnt place a single rt. Thank god i could change to marine :) Some people are born noobs man, and all they can ammount to is a trained noob :P

If any new players see me on the server, and have a mike, and want to comm, im happy to help you out so just ask, im nxzl.hunter in game :)

I have to agree with others, I've seen none of this xenophobia against newbies on the EU side. Hell I even khammed my first real game recently and led my team to... Well defeat, after an hour long game. But not once did I get shouted at.

Still, I've seen this before. Unfortunately these sort people can't see past their own nose and realise the damage it causes to the community in the long-term.

I think the community is pretty fantastic in comparison to most online games out there. 4 out of 5 people will answer any question you have and 1 out of 5 will probably troll you. But if you can't deal with trolls you really have no business on the internet anyway. I came from having played NS1 and played my first game as an Alien. I tried going Gorge and dropping a hive a few minutes in and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. No one called me and idiot, they just explained to me the new commander role. That was the biggest noob mistake i've ever seen anyone in the game do and no one raged at all.

I'm generally ok with new players.. untill they start demanding turrents before 1 minute. Then my blood will boil and I'll go through intense psychotic emotions of anger and patience before questioning the meaning of life.

Experienced players have feelings too.
