^ THIS. I can only hope, that this community is sane enough to not scare the new players away.
there are a lot of ns1 vets that have yet to play the game because of word of mouth or joining too late in beta to play. besides, most pubs arent that "good" yet either. most of the time is spent complaining and f4-ing
lol, why not add another color for people who aren't sure if they wanna help or not, and another color for admins, and another color for normal people, and another color for people with slow pcs (so you dont shot them too much). and maybe give rookies twice as much hitpoints, so they don't die as often and wont get frustrated so fast... *sigh*
seriously, you don't need such crap ns2. people will join, people will leave, you can't force 'em into the game with that care bearish stuff. just play the game, be friendly, give some advice if needed ("how can I evolve, what's the button for flash light" etc.) but dont go over the top with it. if they can't play the game without someone patting their head, we don't really need them here.
You can't really assume you're gonna destroy people simply because they are new...its not like FPS is a new genre nor is RTS. Both elements of the game will probably be grasped a lot quicker than you think. :)

If new players are greeted by a friendly and helpful community they will then, hopefully, turn around and help out new players in the same manner. Fostering a friendly environment is key to the growth of NS2's playerbase, and it is good for everyone to have a large playerbase and plenty of full servers.

I'm sure most vets will be very helpful. What I'd like to see, is the game developer make the game easier to learn. In it's current state (which is pre-release, so is to be expected), the game is not easy to learn. I used to be a great player (always number 1-2). I commanded, I played rines and aliens. I loved the freaking game. I've been playing beta for about a month now, and even though I had played the first one to death, there was a lot of new stuff to learn. NS 2 is a very different beast than NS1.
I had a few friends try out the beta with my account. They all played the first one moderately, and they couldn't remember much. And when it came down to actually fighting, they sucked. Sucked bad. They still enjoyed the beta though, which is great, but my point is, don't expect old players to be good (there are always exceptions though).
So yeah, lets be nice, but please, developers, make the game easier to learn:

clearer UI

a zoo/gym map where you can try all the weapons and life forms

in-game tutorial map

somewhere where it is clearly explained what the objective is!

Ok just to clarify by pub stomp I in know way mean to try and detract from others gaming experience but the simple fact that new players will be at a disadvantage and that for a while until people get used to the game should be amusing.
To those who get angry at "pub stomping". How do you suggest skilled players nerf themselfs it's unrealistic to expect a player to know if his opponent is skilled or not and then to somehow go easy on them....
Personally I wil continue tol play on the all-in servers which are not designated as bigonner freindly and hope new players try at their own risk.
Just play the game! Challenge brings on motivation and motivation brings growth. I always suck at games, even though ive been playing for over 15 years. NS1 was a hell of a ride, hard, new, ended up being pretty decent, learned commanding, etc.
Now im playing World of Tanks, also, another game that brought me to my knees, I couldnt kill a tank even if my life depended on it, today I know all the weak spots by heart.
Make it somewhat challenging, otherwise people like me will lose interest. The challenge of NS1 is what made me love it so much (specially playing alien, I still suck at aliens to this day)
Ok so 2 people have posted that they have been playing 15+ years.... Did they not get the memo that they are releasing the game on the 10 year anniversary!
