No. Just.... no. This game is based around a certain set of rules and features. Take that away, and like someone already posted; a lame counter-strike. I got NS2 to ESCAPE generic FPS.

People with opinions like Chuck7, zip_dev, tarquinbb, and hate... They're what killed NS1.
NS1 combat brought an influx of new players to classic mode, but a lot of people got all huffy and elitist and quit because they couldn't bear to play with people who started off on "THAT mode".
Bah, hey- the more servers the better. Have fun with your combat mode. I certainly won't be supporting it. I prefer the real game to a watered-down fps. Guspaz, how would we kill NS2 if we don't like or play Combat? I think us supporting the vanilla game helps more.
It's like playing gun-game for CS. It's fun, and it added a different style of play. But people's support for the vanilla game is what kept it going. But honestly, I'd take gungame CS over Combat NS2 any day. The gunplay/combat isn't fully developed to stand on JUST that alone. Maybe if combat mode added more dynamics.
I can't think of playing TF2 in just team DM mode. Seems boring without an objective. Be like playing on an 'idle' server, but with active players.

...because those players refused to play the objective?
that's the reason i stopped playing battlefield, and anything other than deathmatch cod, and it's my #1 gripe in tf2.
i've honestly lost count of the number of times in tf2 where i RL scream "STAND ON THE POINT YOU F***ING MONG" (not down the mic, obviously).
but yeah - i'm not against combat. whatever floats your boat... i just think ppl who want to play combat are a bit weird :P
edit: i disagree with the guy above me comparing it to gun game. counterstrike to gun game is like half life deathmatch to natural selection 1. i think it would be more accurate to describe it as counterstrike deathmatch (which is also terribly boring).

Not liking or not playing Combat isn't harmful... I'm referring to the comments we keep seeing about how people say they quit NS1 entirely after combat was released. Even though they could have simply not played Combat, and then had it not affect them in any way, they quit NS1 entirely. They were that... opinionated about it (wanted to use a less polite word there).

Combat could be great, but unfortunately the makers of this mod have decided to copy everything that was bad about NS1 combat, and even add further bad features like gorge hydras and free "catch up" xp, instead of taking the chance to improve it.

I didn't quit NS1 cause of combat, but I do think it's detrimental to the health of the game at this point. We have an incredibly small playerbase, and dividing it this early is a bad idea. Not to mention the game mode gets rid of the good parts of the game and puts all the focus on the "meh" parts of the game.
I hated the combat mod in NS1. So no. I seriously have no problem when you like it. But allow me to make a funny comment on it, to show my hate for this mod. You shouldn't take it serious. It's just my way of jokingly voicing my dislike of this mod. ;)
CoD compared to NS2. Is like Ludo compared to Chess. The combat mod is just like this: <img src="http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/think_logically.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />
This mod has always seemed out of place for a game like. There are tonnes of generic FPS games ie like Combat mode why would you want to make a game that is unique and different from the masses into just another boring death match type game?

I don't know any other games who have movement and play style like NS does in the Fade.
Combat for NS2 is fun but still needs work and more maps. The alien progression is much like normal ns2: Skulk -> Onos -> game over.
This is the problem with the community and it happened with NS1 too. Unless you got on a good set of servers that promoted both then you were met with a fair amount of hostility for mentioning it.
I love classic mode (real mode, proper NS whatever you call it) but I dont always have an hour to play a game. With combat I can drop in for 5-10 mins and have a quick game. Personally I think there is plenty of space for BOTH versions.
Many said "siege" type maps ruined the NS classic games, and again I reckon there is no problem with siege games either. Play what is fun but surely anything that gets people playing NS2 is good?

what happens if marines all just camp in the same room? the onos problem in regular NS2 would be countered by avoiding it and exploiting it's lack of mobility to kill RT's. combat is literally impossible to balance.
it sounds like it would be even more imbalanced and boring than left4dead versus. i would try for myself, but have absolutely no desire to play combat, i would honestly rather re-install modern warfare or battlefield and play that instead.
I personally did not enjoy the inclusion of combat mode. It was ok at first, but then it gave an incentive for a subset of players to never leave their comfort zone, just playing combat mode, and not bothering to master the intricacies of classic mode. Those wanting a deeper experience then had fewer games of classic to play, and that made them leave NS1.
Combat mode also lent itself very easily to various plugins and mods, which really cheapened the experience.
I hope this does not happen with NS2. Hopefully, it's blend of strategy, and increase in game pace and combat frequency will keep NS2 vanilla the main go-to mode, otherwise, NS2 will lose a lot of the sparkle that's got me playing 230 hours so far and counting.
Combat ruined NS1, it came to the point where you couldn't get enough players on the vanilla servers because everyone was just playing combat. That said since the community is so much bigger now there is a little more room for splitting it.
It's too bad combat is already in the game. It ruined NS1 and is going to start to ruin NS2 already. I hope it stays hidden behind the modded filter for long enough that it just dies.
combat was fine when it came out. it was a blast to be able to play smaller games where you didn't have to worry about strategy.
then stuff like xmenu ruined it. 30 minute long combat games of putting in an entire magazine of HMG ammo into onoses and fades and watching them get away.

OMG THIS. THIS IS EXACTLY OUR COMMUNITY
make a banner of this or something lol
go and play gungame in counterstrike:go
This is why NS:2 combat are having a hard time filling
