So I'm looking into getting a new monitor, but I wanted to ask if it's worth getting a 120Hz monitor for NS2? I know this can be kinda controversial but with an average frame rate of 60-80 FPS would it help a lot or not much.
It's not worth it atm if you're just going to play NS2. If you play any other games in which you're able to get 120 FPS, I would highly recommend one. You likely won't go back to 60Hz monitors after experiencing 120Hz. Just make sure to read reviews carefully - I regret buying the early-gen ASUS VG236H due to horrible motion blur and the fact that it doesn't come with LightBoost. -.- Also, the panel is so glossy that my reflection shows up in nearly all lighting conditions. Thankfully, a lot of recent LCD monitors like the BenQ XL2420T avoid these kinds of problems since they either have newer technology or improve on previous monitors' faults.
I've been wanting to buy one for a long time, but I can't stand the 16:9 format. Maybe I should just suck it up and get one anyway. It's going to look odd together with my 16:10 monitors but maybe it's worth it.
If you're doing it for movies, don't. If you're doing it for gaming, make sure you have enough GPU power to actually hit (and stay) at the cap, otherwise what's the point?
The monitor still will benefit users even if they don't hit the cap. At high fps, everything looks extremly smooth. Running 3D games is the only scenario where you have to hit max frames.
P.s. OP, that monitor is the smaller version of the one I own.
Thanks everyone! Just one more question as I don't understand the exact relation between FPS and refresh rate. I understand that a higher refresh rate needs a higher FPS to take advantage of it, but is it just that?

Thanks again guys! I decided to get the 144Hz monitor I mentioned earlier. Hopefully soon the performance improvements of NS2 will help allow me to get full use of the monitor, but even still it's better to take advantage of it early game even if it won't be as effective late game for me. Love to picture Squishpoke! True art :P
It's not going to help too much with 60-80 FPS, no, but it's night and day with >90 FPS.
it's a wee bit aggravating to go from 120fps in every other game I play to 45-70 in NS2.
Yes, yes, and yes. 120 Mhz will look much better and more smooth even if your game not running on 120 FPS.
Also, I'd suggest you getting 3D Vision 2 (not the first version) compatible monitor like Asus VG278H or some BenQ models. They have both 120 Mhz (never revision of Asus one promises 146 Mhz!) and top quality 3D image as for now. While NS2 is not supporting 3D properly, some games with looks like a complitelly new experince, like Max Payne 3 or new Tomb Raider.
guys... u r talking statistics, u should talk physics and chemistry.
its about how much light over which time the monitor emits and
how much light the eye need to start the chemical reaction which leads
to an input information signal for the brain.
fps values are always average... so for example, you are looking to a heavy fight scene,
your fps drop to 60 average, a skulk jumps at you and lands behind you, so you have to turn.
thats an event of miliseconds, but when you turn you are facing just walls and one skulk,
so your fps will go up for this part of the second and thats also the most critical moment in the game,
because when you have a fluid movement and you see those images very sharp,
you can track better and thats why you want to go with a strobing 120hz monitor instead
a not strobing 144hz monitor, over everything else

I would be interested to hear if you feel you play better once you get it. Let us know!
120hz will typically also have a lot less input lag than a 60 hz
Well, part of that is because their higher costs require the manufacturers to target performance level consumers. The 120hz monitors are typically made of higher quality components as a result.
asus vg248QE 144hz that costs 299$ Deffinitely reccomend. 1ms response time very fast. lightboost is over-hyped, i prefer standard 144hz because it is just as smooth and the colors dont get dimmed down.

I have the same screen but I prefer lightboost 24/7 since the screen is to damn bright out of the box and I've downloaded calibrated profiles for LB @ 120hz and I do feel its more smooth in NS2 than normal 144hz

if you have 60 FPS, your game is only refreshing 60 frames, so that's all your monitor can display.
Today I had to google a new word.

been waiting for the 120hz prices to drop for years, still a little too high for me currently.
asus fixed that for you. about a month ago. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313&Tpk=144hz monitor&IsVirtualParent=1
