I could've sworn I had said this a few times already:

"Yes we know there is some problems with the linux server. And we are addressing them."

It's not just the linux version that needs some tweaking. Please make a note to work on the Windows version too. PLZ

Debian seems to be a pleasant exception to most things "bad." 'Dependancy-hell' is more of a back-handed swipe at past RedHats; I hear they're slowly getting better, although their directory layout is still cracked-up beyond belief. Mandrake, Ygg, and a few others burned with library fire for awhile too, but I haven't touched any of those for quite some time.

I have no problems with my Slack workstation. However, I also know it inside and out. This makes installing complex software packages that insist on broken autoconf scripts much simpler. "Oh, configure, you can't find libfoo? I know where that is. It's installed in a very standard location. Why are you having troubles finding it? Please hold while I override your brain-deadness."

For most things, whereis and which are adequate. whereis behaves differently on several platforms, sometimes even consulting locate. On platforms where it doesn't, it can miss important things due to its hard-coded list of search directories (overridable on command line, but you're searching for something that you don't know the location of ), such as a MySQL binary-installation in /usr/local/mysql.

Wow, we're now way offtopic. Suggest moving discussion to another forum such as 'general' for continuation, if necessary.
