My God, a criticism of something that didn't result in a flame war?

The NS PTs had a big game a few nights, a sort of "for old times' sake" match. It was the playtesters vs. Iron Lore and Flayra.

Granted, Iron Lore were not first-class players, but they did have Flayra commanding them, and that's definitely something. He's a very capable commander. On a whim, we playtesters decided to go Sensory first. Our cloaking worked like a charm; they had no clue, we took them apart, etc. A mess, all in all.

The second hive went up, and Silverfox, our gorge, said "Ok....... I'm getting movement chambers." There was a bit of dissent, because defense *is* pretty key... but he did it, and we went with it. Let me tell you, cloak + silence is just godly. Pretty soon we were building turrets outside the marine spawn; multiple lerks with umbra provided cover for a few fades as we attacked the phase outpost at Eclipse Command. Webs were everywhere; marines couldn't step out of their fortified areas without losing their weapon and then their heads to the skulk cloaked on the ceiling above.

They were smart, though... our Fade/Lerk combos suddenly found themselves faced with grenade fire, and without carapace we had to adapt to deal with it. Skulks rushed the grenadiers, Lerks tossed umbras and then pulled back out of the fire area, and the onslaught continued. Before long we finally killed the phase gate at Eclipse Command, and the third hive went up. 3 Onos at the marine spawn sealed the game.

Yeah, sensory->movement->defense. It was quite a rush, let me tell you, but it worked. We weren't tanks - we were hit-and-run commandos, ambush specialists. And damn, we had fun doing it. (:

I've always argued in the KIR server that sensory is MOST useful at the beginning. Sure, marine will have motion tracking eventually... but if you place sensory last, they still have motion tracking, and you have *no* use for it. I've never tried movement 2nd, as I prefer a bit of carapace over increased adrenaline, but I guess anything's worth a try.

Lt.Warhound > I would NEVER try cloaking first in 1.03, but in 1.04, with 3 SC cloaking is really really something...

Just try it in the new version, you'll be surprised.

If your team accepts to try it, and if they change their way of playing (from aggressive to stealth) you'll see the game can ve different. Yes, you're weak, but invisible lol.

Once a HA marines wal walknig and I just had time to cloak before he sees me... well he stepped on me lol and he was really surprised

Heh I remember a lot of S/D/M and S/M/D games when NS was brand new. I would always get a cloak/silence fade and back stab every marine to death right outside their base. Was a lot of fun, but HA caused a little trouble, sometimes they would kill you even if you got the element of suprise on your side.

That just doesn't work too well anymore. Back then most marines didn't even know aliens could cloak. Once a HA guy even tried to walk right trough me, but got stuck so he just walked around me. Then I stabbed him and his pal to death. Then I would proceed to attack the marine base with acid rockets. This of course alerted the marines and I usually got a couple lmg/la marines after me. Guess what hapened to them? Yeah I stabbed them in the back.

Coil, I assume this game was played in tournament mode? Isn't motion tracking disabled in this mode? Motion tracking would make a huge difference to the effectiveness of silence and cloak..... and pub games you will see no where near the level of skill or teamwork as the PT's would have.

Sounds like fun! Sounds like you guys had really good teamwork too which always adds to the fun-factor.

MT works in tourney mode. It's just rarely researched but I've commanded a couple games in tournament mode and MT operates exactly the same.

Btw, I tried two games yesterday with s>d>m and won both, the first one easily, the second one took some time due to jp/hmg marines slaughtering my hives when I was trying to get the third up but needless to say, both games I owned the map and built at my leisure save a couple pesky rambos and a phase/turret combo at Archiving that didn't last long . Sure, we didn't just bust into their base the moment we went fades, not that I know why mind you but since I had the 3rd hive starting by the time the 2nd was up, I wasn't exactly worried about it.

Before CM mentions it, I'll give him a few guesses who made up the marine team.
