That is the great thing about MMORPGs; little to no story goes into them (Its "open ended". Pah.. They were just too lazy), they can release an incomplete game and patch it (to fix bugs and add inprovements which should have been done BEFORE release. Take a que from Blizzard, its ok to delay a game for years if you are still improving on/debugging it), and they are all have the same concept (run/ride/fly around and kill baddies to get to the next area, lather, rinse, repeat). The best thing about it is that people actually pay to go through these hastles. So we will, and are, see many more of these horrid games come out in the near future until people begin to see what ****ups they are.
As long as Graphic **** demand games with no content game companies will pump out the usual graphical ****storm of games that come out. I personally dont like to see the plot hit the incenerator in stunning 3D, anti-alised, open GL, 2^whatever color graphics.
Very rarely do I see a game come out that has both good graphics and even a decent storyline. These usually come from the independent/modding community (Thank you Flay for making such a great mod, you did a lot with one of those few great games), and Blizzard.
Blizzard has to be one of the few gaming companies in my mind (or the only one I can think of at the moment) that continually produces games with decent stories and good/great graphics which do not continually need to be patched due to laziness and deadlines. A game is not working well, delay it until it is. Not like BF1942 and many other games which have patches released before they even hit the shelves, and Anarchy Online, which was unplayable for months after it's release. Instead, the vast majority of patches that blizzard releases are ment for people to develop new strategeis (thinking of Warcraft 3, nerfing damage on one unit, and beefing it on another) not for fixing mistakes that any programming student can see if given time.
I seriously enjoy games that give excellent gameplay, storyline, and character development over . To this day my favorite games remain the Baldur's Gate series and almost any PSX/SNES RPG. [/rant]
Homeworld is a great example of effective use of 3d. X/Y/Z rules!
Blizzard is THE best game company I have seen for PC. SquareSoft is THE best for PS2/PSX. Bungie is THE best for Xbox. and Retro is THE best for GameCube.
And I recently played Final Fantasy Tactics through (till I got stuck, stupid Elmdor and his 2 ho's). Good story line, no major flaws, 2d graphics. Same with Fallout 2/Fallout. Same with any Blizzard games.

If TA sucked, I cant imagine what you think of the rts genre in general, cause i've played a lot of them, and TA is still in the top 3.
It was the best of both worlds. 3D units and structures in a gorgeous 2d enviroment. It's been the lan game of choice with me and my friends for the better part of 6 years now.
And the sick part is: It STILL looks better then the crap they're churning out today, but it runs slicker then froghair on a 133mghz computer with a 4mb 3d card. With todays system specs, and changing max_units from 200 to 2000, you can have some of the most amazing battles without chugging at all.
I have yet to understand why this game wasnt adopted as industry standard long, long ago, and why the guys who developed it arent living in antigua, sipping coronas on a big fat pile of hundred dollar bills.

WC3 and Generals are really good examples of successful 3D camera use in a game - KEEP IT SIMPLE! Most people get lost trying to pivot the camera all over, then get frustrated, then quit the game. A thousand and one bad RTS clone games come to mind.

2d isometric is by far easier to code, and it uses less memory for simple "unit" calculations.

I'll play TA over C&CG any day.
