Exactly. When you start getting into the triple-digit soldier range, you start losing troops and killing enemy troops in attacks. Future information, Mercenaries seem to get killed first, and you can always buy more of THOSE, whereas regular troops require a click to nab. Little expensive, but it's worth it to just fork over $3250 for an already-trained merc who is quite expendable, when you have a thousand-plus gp coming in each turn..
Man I just came up with the best strategy (that probably all you know already ;D)
Just build up attack-duty dudes, siege equiptment, and weapons and the attack people 5 lvls higher than you. You get around 25000 from each 15 attacks (try to attack people with over 60k gold and a weak defence, spys are great) Then spend all the money you get, so when you have 0 gold who ib his right mind would attack you, unless to kill your troops?
Well atleast imo that is a good tactic, I'v only been playing for 7 days and I already got: 4 knife (5) 1 helmet (20) 4 short bow (10) a Stockade and Long Shields and 18 men, 1 is a attack-mercenary, 12 attack, 4 defence, 2 all-purpose. and 1 lvl 3 spy.
Currently i have: 29 dwarves (2 attack, 2 def, the rest all purpose) +160 to attack +300 to defend +3 unit production no spies
I only attack enemies that are AT LEAST 5-6 lvls above me usually around +10 from me. Rarely do I attack elves (defense bonus). I usually filter my opponents by the amount of cash they have (the ones with most usually have the smallest armies/dont play).
Mercs are great, every three or four clicks, buy them (any type will do) until you reach your 25% cap. Totally bloat your army and bide your time using the steady income to buy more weapons/armor/upgrades/mercs until you've got enough attack turns to do some damage. Then go at it and get your next level of camp and siege.

Helmets are a waste of money, though... do the math, and you'll see that Shields give the most return. can buy two Shields (50 apiece) for 5,000 less than the price of one Chainmail (100).
Also, Knives *used* to be the big thing to buy... they were only 1000gp apiece, and you could effectively get 25 offense bonus for the price of the level 2 weapon (short bows for Elves), which only give 10 bonus. Unfortunately, due to a few particular people buying 1000+ knives for a cheap, ultra-powerful assault force, those have been kicked up to 2500. :b
Save up attacks. LOTS of them. As in, over 130-200. Pick out six or seven relatively weak guys with enough cash. BEAT THEM DOWN ALL AT ONCE. Fast as you can, buy your next Siege upgrade. Also, do it OFF the ten-minute marks... that's when the global cash-stats page refreshes. If you can pull it off, no one will be the wiser as to your rather significant winnings, until after you've already spent them on stuff that can't be stolen/broken.
Also, save building up your Spy Ratings until you have around 60,000 to dump in at once... you can buy 20 levels of Spy Training that way, as opposed to paying incrementally higher each time you upgrade (first time you upgrade, it's the base 3K, no matter HOW many levels you buy. Next time, all of them are charged at the higher rating level... why I'm pretty much stuck at level 14 now. :b) Oh.. and don't attack elves, unless you're a stone bad*ss. That 25% bonus WILL step on you, as a lot of elves go 100% defense to slowly build up their resources. Only thing that will nail them is a VERY well-equipped army, a very LARGE, TRAINED army, or a Dwarf army on full-offense.
(Wanders back into his Walled Town to sit and enjoy building up gp, waiting to see if Comprox is going to try and attack him again)
Yah, I never attack elf, just not worth it. As for the spy thing, after you mentioned spies are good in IRC, I went and upgraded them to level 12 in the first go, not knowing thye went up in price, so thankfully Im not like you They cost 7K to upgrade again, so Im waiting till I have a big chunk of cash to waste on them.
Im getting close to that big attack thing for my fortress, Ive done lots of attacking, got a couple of longbows, a bucket load of shields and done a little more training Soon...

Nah, I kicked mine up to level 14 in the first go. I'm just reluctant to blow 8K per level from now on, until I get something like a Stronghold with Dynamite.
Also, beware growing too fast. You may get stuck in doldrums... always getting attacked and having your cash taken, never being able to save up for a Siege Defense upgrade. Buy lots of knives in this instance, keep your icash-on-hand VERY low so as not to attract attention. You don't lose the money nor troops (of being attacked at a higher army-count) and upgrade your offensive capabilities for when you do the blitzkrieg.
My unit production is currently at +7. I've currently got 28 soldiers, but I could have sworn I had 26 yesterday. Nobody has attacked me at all, so what's on the go?
What time of day does it add these soldiers? Does it happen at midnight where the KoC server is, or does it happen at whatever time of day you first created your account?
[edit1] spent another $100k on unit production today, so it's +7 now instead of +5
as was said before, if you keep yoiur onhand cash low, noone will attack you. My first search paramater in attacks is cash. Then race, then the defenses. If you dont have any cash, noone will want to attack. Now to go make another 200k.

I don't finish playing for the day until my money is about as low as I can get it. If someone is dumb enough to attack me when I've only got a few thousand gold really isn't going to get much of a reward when they win. If they manage to kill off a few of my soldiers, my high unit production will just replace them several times over the next day.
Thankfully, I've got NSArmy to help repel the silly attackers who are obviously more interested in vengeance than loot.
