Well, that's mighty old, and not the vendor's driver, but we are nearly there. What we need at this point is the exact network card info (as the MS info is a bit generic, and Linksys is listing a lot of different drivers here for a lot of different cards). So, in order to do this we need to look at the card itself, and see what it says for a make and model. So unless you still have the box that card came in lying around:

    1. Turn off PC and unplug the power and network cable.
    2. Open PC case (and put one hand on the metal framework inside occasionally to make sure you are not launching bots everywhere)
    3. Look at see on the card what the model is (<a href='http://www.linksys.com/download/driver.asp?dlid=2&osid=6' target='_blank'>Look here to see where it might be printed on a Linksys card, typically)</a>
    4. Close case, put all cables back on, power up, and come back here. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Then we can figure out what the Linksys version of the driver is, update to that, and see if everything starts working all hunky-dory.

Dang - Linksys does not make a driver for that one. They rely on the MS driver. Have you done a Windows Update recently and seen if MS is offering an updated driver based on their scan of your PC?

Hmm.. maybe I should just go out and by myself a new ethernet card.. this one is about 3 years old.

Well, if you run Internet Explorer, then 'Tools | Windows Update', and let it run the scan, it may offer up a more up to date driver for that NIC. Those types of updates sometimes will not be automagically offered along with other ones, as driver updates are typically considered non-essential, as opposed to say a security patch.

And if they have no offering, heck, getting a new NIC to replace a 3-year old one is no bad idea. They are so darned cheap these days... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

basically whatever makes me play this game that much better :-p You wouldn't believe how many games I've played where I've had that moment where I'd almost swaer my head off because I know if I could have just controlled the area better we would have won.. but instead my ping'll kill me.

Just this morning I lost a game because the marines seiged refinery and I couldn't stop them because of my ping. The reason was because it lagged to much, a phase gate was up and marines kept pouring through the phase as I was eating away at the TF's blind spot.. hell there was even 2 DCs on the other side of the wall healing us.. we got the TF down atleast 3 times before the marines just overwelmed us and I'd always be the last alive, while 3 marines would jump througha nd start shooting at me making my ping fly up to 400+ while everyone else is nice and cozy with 60-100 ><

How does a 56/k connect at 28.8? I'm asking because I once noticed (upon going through different internet software) that it said I was connected at 28.8. I disregarded it but now I think there may be a problem. I'm running a 56/k (which isn't really very good to start with).

Because with an analog modem you are <b>mod</b>ualting and <b>dem</b>odulating data into sound and vis versa. That chirpy squawk you here as your modem connects is the sound of it trying to negotiate speeds based on the noise of you line, the quality of the wiring, signal attenuation over distance, etc...

So it can end up just finding what it considers a reliable, slower connection rate if noise is preventing more data from flowing through.

But anyway.. till then, is there any way to start halflife with just the bare esentials? Cause I wonder if it's a program running that's eating up my ping.

Hmmm... well, you can use winmsd to see fairly easily:

    1. Start | Run | 'winmsd' and click ok.
    2. In the dialog that opens up, select the plus sign by 'Software Environment'.
    3. In the branch that opens, select 'startup groups'
    4. At the top, click file | Export and save the startup info to a file called 'c:\startup.txt'.
    5. Close this dialog.
    6. Start | run | 'cmd' and click ok.
    7. In the resulting 'DOS'-style window, type (no quotes) 'net start > c:\services.txt' and hit enter

Then post contents here of your saved c:\startup.txt info file and your c:\services.txt file here and we can see what can be safely deactivated or is a possible culprit. Or at least make fun of you having pr0n pages set to autoload at boot <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> .

The reason i connect so slow, is because i have miles and miles of telephone line between me and the telephone exchange. Because i live in the middle of nowhere !! Where they cannot be botherd to upgrade there exchange because only "33 out of 50 have applied for this"

    i mean... JEZUS COME ON!!

Err, the winmsd startup service list should just be listing apps set to start from the 'run' registry key and the 'startup' start menu folders. Are you sure you got the right output from winmsd?

    Computer Browser
    Help and Support
    Server

...can all be set to manual, to recover some unused resources ('server' service only if you do not run a network in your house that shares files and printers). But that really won't help a huge amount really. It will help secure your PC a bit though. Get that list from winmsd, it will likely be more juicy...

Good lord almighty you are loading a lot of stuff...

Under your startup folders, you might consider turning off (and by this I mean moving the shortcuts to a temporary folder somewhere else, as a backup):

    Webshots
    ATI Launchpad
    VAIO Action Setup (Server)

Then (and heres where it gets a bit more dangerous, so be careful) in regedit, navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and choose File | export, and make a backup reg file in case things go nutty here. Then go through and remove all these entries (unless there is one you are 100% sure you can't live without):

    IgfxTray
    HotKeysCmds
    HPDJ Taskbar Utility
    WinampAgent
    WinServices
    XupiterCfgLoader
    WhenUSave
    AtiPTA

Remember, make those backups of this stuff. Then restart your PC and startup NS without running anything else, and see how things are looking. Most of these apps are system-tray 'save you some time' applets, like the HP printer one, the ATI utility control, etc. that you really don't need to be running. Is this PC a factory-configured setup, like it came preconfigured from a company like compq, dell, or gateway?
