Well, that's mighty old, and not the vendor's driver, but we are nearly there. What we need at this point is the exact network card info (as the MS info is a bit generic, and Linksys is listing a lot of different drivers here for a lot of different cards). So, in order to do this we need to look at the card itself, and see what it says for a make and model. So unless you still have the box that card came in lying around:
1. Turn off PC and unplug the power and network cable. 2. Open PC case (and put one hand on the metal framework inside occasionally to make sure you are not launching bots everywhere) 3. Look at see on the card what the model is (<a href='http://www.linksys.com/download/driver.asp?dlid=2&osid=6' target='_blank'>Look here to see where it might be printed on a Linksys card, typically)</a> 4. Close case, put all cables back on, power up, and come back here. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Then we can figure out what the Linksys version of the driver is, update to that, and see if everything starts working all hunky-dory.

Dang - Linksys does not make a driver for that one. They rely on the MS driver. Have you done a Windows Update recently and seen if MS is offering an updated driver based on their scan of your PC?

I'm running a 56/k (which isn't really very good to start with).
Because with an analog modem you are <b>mod</b>ualting and <b>dem</b>odulating data into sound and vis versa. That chirpy squawk you here as your modem connects is the sound of it trying to negotiate speeds based on the noise of you line, the quality of the wiring, signal attenuation over distance, etc...
So it can end up just finding what it considers a reliable, slower connection rate if noise is preventing more data from flowing through.
I can't get to Best Buy till friday.. I don't got a car of my own :x and it's a city away.
But anyway.. till then, is there any way to start halflife with just the bare esentials? Cause I wonder if it's a program running that's eating up my ping.
Hmmm... well, you can use winmsd to see fairly easily:
1. Start | Run | 'winmsd' and click ok. 2. In the dialog that opens up, select the plus sign by 'Software Environment'. 3. In the branch that opens, select 'startup groups' 4. At the top, click file | Export and save the startup info to a file called 'c:\startup.txt'. 5. Close this dialog. 6. Start | run | 'cmd' and click ok. 7. In the resulting 'DOS'-style window, type (no quotes) 'net start > c:\services.txt' and hit enter
Then post contents here of your saved c:\startup.txt info file and your c:\services.txt file here and we can see what can be safely deactivated or is a possible culprit. Or at least make fun of you having pr0n pages set to autoload at boot <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> .

Err, the winmsd startup service list should just be listing apps set to start from the 'run' registry key and the 'startup' start menu folders. Are you sure you got the right output from winmsd?
Computer Browser Help and Support Server
...can all be set to manual, to recover some unused resources ('server' service only if you do not run a network in your house that shares files and printers). But that really won't help a huge amount really. It will help secure your PC a bit though. Get that list from winmsd, it will likely be more juicy...

Good lord almighty you are loading a lot of stuff...
Under your startup folders, you might consider turning off (and by this I mean moving the shortcuts to a temporary folder somewhere else, as a backup):
Webshots ATI Launchpad VAIO Action Setup (Server)
Then (and heres where it gets a bit more dangerous, so be careful) in regedit, navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and choose File | export, and make a backup reg file in case things go nutty here. Then go through and remove all these entries (unless there is one you are 100% sure you can't live without):
Remember, make those backups of this stuff. Then restart your PC and startup NS without running anything else, and see how things are looking. Most of these apps are system-tray 'save you some time' applets, like the HP printer one, the ATI utility control, etc. that you really don't need to be running. Is this PC a factory-configured setup, like it came preconfigured from a company like compq, dell, or gateway?
IgfxTray -No clue what this is.. HotKeysCmds -No clue what this is.. HPDJ Taskbar Utility -My printer? WinampAgent -Winamp.. don't know what it's here though WinServices -No clue what this is.. XupiterCfgLoader -freaking THING IS STILL ALIVE DIE DIE DIE!!! (it's some stupid browser thingy my sister downloaded) WhenUSave -ad spammer that hasn't been removed? AtiPTA - Isn't the atiPTA thingy my Radeon card though?
cough.. and er.. where exactly is my start up folder?

...can all be set to manual, to recover some unused resources ('server' service only if you do not run a network in your house that shares files and printers). But that really won't help a huge amount really. It will help secure your PC a bit though. Get that list from winmsd, it will likely be more juicy...
Well at that step I only have a part called startup programs.. I figured it was the same so just went with it.

Under your startup folders, you might consider turning off (and by this I mean moving the shortcuts to a temporary folder somewhere else, as a backup):
Webshots
ATI Launchpad
VAIO Action Setup (Server)
Then (and heres where it gets a bit more dangerous, so be careful) in regedit, navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and choose File | export, and make a backup reg file in case things go nutty here. Then go through and remove all these entries (unless there is one you are 100% sure you can't live without):
IgfxTray
HotKeysCmds
HPDJ Taskbar Utility
WinampAgent
WinServices
XupiterCfgLoader
WhenUSave
AtiPTA
Remember, make those backups of this stuff. Then restart your PC and startup NS without running anything else, and see how things are looking. Most of these apps are system-tray 'save you some time' applets, like the HP printer one, the ATI utility control, etc. that you really don't need to be running. Is this PC a factory-configured setup, like it came preconfigured from a company like compq, dell, or gateway?
HotKeysCmds -No clue what this is..
HPDJ Taskbar Utility -My printer?
WinampAgent -Winamp.. don't know what it's here though
WinServices -No clue what this is..
XupiterCfgLoader -freaking THING IS STILL ALIVE DIE DIE DIE!!! (it's some stupid browser thingy my sister downloaded)
WhenUSave -ad spammer that hasn't been removed?
AtiPTA - Isn't the atiPTA thingy my Radeon card though?
cough.. and er.. where exactly is my start up folder?
