It depends, if I am fighting fades, I prefer a Shotty because
1) a JP and a Shotty for me costs the same as an HMG 2) With a JP I can stay far enough away from the fade that he cant hit me, but close enough that most of the little pellet things hit. 3) The massive burst of damage can often kill redemtion fades, who have a tendancy to not be as careful as other fades.
If I am going Rambo against the enemy hive however, I like HMG, because its good for taking down piles of charging skulks, requires less thinking (Just keep Mouse1 pressed and divert your attention to flying your JP) and can deal more damage faster to a hive.
It's great being able to watch a Skulk run up the hall towards you, Leap, and then get blown to pieces when you fire one round into the Skulk at nearly point-blank range.
Shotty. I've always said that real men stick with LMGs, but shotguns don't hurt at all. Personally, the only time I give shotguns is when it is time to deal with fades. Esp a fade with redempt.
Its always the newbs that beg for HMGs. In a fade-heavy environment, I'd rather stick with an LMG, shotty/JP second.
Shotgun > all. Cause more damage at close range than any weapon - makes it the 'cool customer' weapon, as if you hold back tot eh last second, you can explode most enemies in a single shot.
hell, i use anything/everything to the fullest
they are both excellent weapons, just one gets handed out far more than the other.
I don't think i've gotten a shotgun from any comm, even late game when i specifically ask for one, in a very long time. I guess most comms assume hmgs are the only way to be effective and that all marines are incapable of handling the shotty. Although they definately shouldn't be given out as much as the hmg, when we are forming squads, esp. HA squads, 1 shotgun should go out per 4 people IMO and i never see that happen. Then again I never see HA anymore either so i guess that's a moot point.
Anyways, I prefer shotguns when accompanied by others in HA. Why? In a squad, it basically turns you into a support class like the fade. You have a VERY powerful close range weapon to keep skulks/fades/whatever is brave enough to run around your feet in a fire fight off your buddie's arses, and whip out your pistol and you can be long range support too against individual targets. I never really mastered the kamikazi divebomb jp/shotgun technique (flying into your enemy and blowing them to bits, then flying away again. For JPs, i definately prefer HMGs because it makes it that much easier to say alive and in the air.
Well. IMO i think that there should be two shotguns per five. 2 Shotgun/pistol/jp with 3 HMG/Welder/HA troops, with the Shotty guys keeping the rear flank and taking out buildings (Shotgun is a frickin mobile siege)
I have also seen a group of 5 HA, only two with hmgs, fully upgraded weapons/.armor. They were unstopable.

I like the shotgun much more then the hmg. For attacking alien players a shotgun jp is great. For buildings though you need the long hmg clip. One thing that most people don't seem to factor in when compairing the two guns, is that 1. the hmg costs about 10 res more, so is SHOULD be better 2. you don't have to upgrade the armory to get shotguns, which is 35 res that could go to upgrading ammo or a protype lab.
Didn't consider the anti-redemption effect on Fades that the shotgun delivers, thanks for that.
I like the shotgun much more then the HMG but I don't think it's anywhere near as good. I often ask marines if they are any good with a shotgun and drop one early if that is the case.
Best thing about the shotty: You never die because of reloading, it's a one-shot-killer at close range.
The HMG is by far the best gun though, it just delivers so damn much damage. There's a reason it is the backbone of most Marine attacks.
Having said that I always take the shotty if I get to chose, since it's just so damn cool
I think the anti-redemption-Fade factor should be considered though. Redemption has become so damn popular for Fades and it's nice to have a "counter". Personally I think Redemption is useless but that's another discussion.
And it IS the only one-shot-killer in the game. Like the NS version of an AWP
Even though I love the shotty, it just can't compete with the hmg OVERALL. Shotgun takes too much skill to ALWAYS be worth it; hmg will always do huge damage. When a skulk gets lvl 3 cara you have to hit him with ALL 10 pellets to kill it; that really relies on the scatter of the shot versus the angle the skulk comes in on you and NOT on your timing and waiting for the last second. I would pick the shotty always cause I think it's way more fun, but the hmg is much more effective in nearly all situations :/
I use whatever gun my commander gives me, but if he asks me what I want, I take shotgun a lot of times. Assumed you are good marines and working in at least 2-man-teams, a team of LMG+Shotty can be very effective. The LGM opens fire on long- to mid-range.. if the target manages to get any closer, the shotty will blow it away... well that's in early-game however but one LMG playing the bait for a fade and a shotty coming frm behind can be quite effective, too.
I see it this way: it's all about COMBINING the advantages each weapon offers.
About the Redemption-Fades: I'm one of them... I realy LOVE Redemption, not only because it makes my stats look good, but because it saves a lot of resources and time!! As a Fade you are worth 54 resources and take quite a lot of time to evolve. While dead or evolving your team lacks fire- and man-power... so not dying seems quite a good idea to me btw: a very gimmick-style to use redemption is to use it as a "movement-chamber"... I do this is the hive is under attack and no MC is nearby... just fire some acidrocket to your feed until your health is low enough... how you are either at the hive that's under attack or another hive wich normaly should hev a MC nearby. Because the hive heals you quite quick this is still risky but not too risky... at least it's a very nice surprise
I dont really like shotties when i have HA though... my mobility just went out the window. And HMGs are far better for random panic spraying than shotties.
Ultimately I prefer the Bitegun, but out of shotty and HMG, I prefer the shotty.
Whenever I reload a HMG, I start falling asleep. The pistol is the equivalent of a mini-shotgun for me. If you could carry more rounds for the pistol, and also have the option of pistol-whip, then the pistol would be the end-all-be-all weapon of choice.
Hint: Use the pistol like a shotgun, wait until they are up close, pull out your pistol, blam, blam, blam, dead.
Simple: Shotty is the damn coolest gun in the game!
Too bad i've almost never had it

i like to play as an engineer, building base, setting up/guarding secured hives crawling through vents, mines etc
That level 3 shotgun will take out a d chamber in like 4-5 shots. And god help any alien that gets in my way when im in a vent or hallway, Plus i turn into Davis AA The Flack Cannon against any flying lerks. Its like duck hunt lol.

hmg does nearly twice the damage of the shotty without reloading, so I don't really see much of a comparison there.

If I have a JP, I'd rather the HMG, because I can go hive hunt, and i don't plan on being close to ANYTHING.
