"n00b"

supergrendel2000supergrendel2000 Join Date: 2003-03-02 Member: 14219Members

and why you should be shot for saying it
The word 'n00b' has always gotten on my nerves, especially when two people get in a fight based purely with that one word. Now, the meaning of 'n00b' has always been something along the lines of "a newbie that has no skill and/or is annoying". In brief, here is my list of what is wrong with the word and its uses:

1. The word is used as a very primitive form of retaliation; that is, name-calling.
2. It is often misused, directed at people for minor mistakes
3. An intention of instigating a kiddie name-calling fight is almost always associated with its use.
4. The use of the word, essentially, makes you one. ('n00b' uses two zeroes, which is associated so-called "n00b speak" [using numbers, mispellings, and incorrect punctuation to sound like a ****]: TLAKING L1K3 TIHS D00D)

Thats all for now. "Newb" is such a better connotation when you think about it...

OK, first of all its called leet speak and not n00b speak. Since, you seem to use this as one of your main arguments, you are deemed n00bish.

    Now, reconsider.

And it has nothing to do with skill
    No newbies have skill
It's that n00b's don't WANT to get better
    They just wanna annoy people
    hehe
A newbie would say "How do you do this ?"
    A n00b would say "I are "elite" ! This game sux ! I can't kill people with this resnode ! H4X !"

Don't forget going Gorge or Comm and wasting all the res on useless structures, like 10 Sensories or 5 IPs.
  • JowerJower Join Date: 2003-02-12 Member: 13448Members
Well that dosen't have to be a n00b
    Newbie's would do the same...
    hehe
Although a good newbie woulden't go comm/gorge until (s)he had learnt the game

Using ANY numbers in your words constitutes you a newbie. I don't care what you say, there is nothing elite about replacing letters with numbers, unless it is used as a joke. "n00b" is used regularly in common speak and is therefore the language of the newbies. Using 1 3 3 7 once in a while is ok, but should't be used too liberally like n00b is. Sorry to shatter your glass world, but leet speak died in 1997.

Essentially, the real players will learn to recognize a lamer and call him a lamer, not a n00b. Whereas a mediocre player uses cryptic number-words to look cool while at the same time putting down someone they dont even know.

    EDIT:

And what makes you think that "n00bs" dont want to get better? Psychologically, one put in the situation of being riduculed and harrassed would try to get out of it, and you mean to say that they dont? Please, there cant be an alleged populace of unsubordinate newbies that large.

"elite"-sp33k has got nothing to do with n00b...
    hehe
"elite"-sp33k is a stupid thing some people do
    Dosen't make you a n00b

It may not make you a n00b, but it sure does make you a newbie. If you cant put the right letters together in a cohesive sentence, I'd have to say you dont know a thing about your own written language, let alone the game you're playing.

Ok thats enough for today. Just remember, arguing over the internet is faded and makes us all big newbies.

    Thank you.

No, it doesn't. It makes you an arrogant moron, plain and simple, to have to resort to not only name calling, but purposely mispelling a term that doesn't exist in the first place. Whatever definition that separates "n00b", "newb", "newbie" is the stuff you made up yourself to justify belittling others.

It's pretty ridiculous to see people actually try to justify the use of "n00b" by explaining that it's actually a whole different breed of players than "newbie". It's nonsensical and only serves to illustrate the creative impotence in one's ability to come up with insults.

I would have to agree with supergrendel2000, I find this really annoying seeing some person insult someone they don't even know by calling them "n00bs". Most of these **** are spotty little nerds that would never have the balls to even look at half the people that are insulting.

I have taken the less offensive, cuter sounding "nubbin" variety to heart. I use it in good spirit. Or so I hope. "Ah, you nubbins! Stick together!" You know, when good players do goofy things they wouldn't do if they were careful

I have been called a noob for comming, JP+HMG rushing (that was my 4th time comm, 2nd victory) but only giving 2 JP+HMG. These 2 were, by coincidence, the only that actually understood the object of the game and went for the hive. The others were like COMM SIEGE THERE'S A RT HERE I NEED HELP IM SCARED TO GET THAT RT ALONE!!!!!

and once I said "ok jps are finished, I'll drop some JP+HMG they just decided to spawn camp

I usually try not to call anyone noob. It's true that it's usually "noobs" that call someone else a noob. It's what some people call an inferiority complex.

(omg you noob I play NS for 1 year type)

All in all, if he's an idiot he's an idiot. That's the way it is. Try to help them, and it they don't want your help, make him suffer the consequences. I havve already waited (chuckling ^^) right next to a marine and let him kill a gorge that didn't do anything. Yes it is VERY lame but sometimes they just don't get it...

i take it this also involves calling some one a "m8". Now why would u want to get rid of that. plus i dont see what is wrong with short hand, its quicker to type "n00b" than "newbie" or even "newb".

Actualy it was really just a pointless thread, u alone would neva stop ppl from sayin n00b to ppl no matter what u said. only way u could do that was to have most servers * it or what ever.

    somethingawful article: (old)

Jack, you missed the point of my thread. Its not about how fast you can type a word because in the time it takes to type in "n00b" you can just as easily type "newb". Anyhow, I can stop people from using the word. I have already done it at the Infantry message boards, and with enough awarness of the idiocy in saying "n00b" this community can stop too.

By the way, you're in no place to argue with me. When you stop using AOL teen chatter acronyms, give me a ring.

for me is the word noob a serious insult so i try to contain my rage to call all that uses stupid tactics like the JP/HMG **** tactic this word. but i don't like the way grendel associated 1 3 3 7 5P34K1NG with being a noob. just because you use a language that is non-existant and cannot be uttered with a voice. there are peeps that just want to stay in character. i once saw some good comm get kicked and then banned for a 1 3 3 7 name and he didn't get a warning fo the kick, just because he got in argument with some **** that found winning the game with relocation and JP/HA assault(not just one man but the whole team, we had to protect our HA/HMG teamies) after some peeps confirmed the lack of warning fo the kick, he started a pathetic attempt to emerge victorious, he gave him 1 second to change and banned him. after that it was self-service all the way. i don't have a thing against
1 3 3 7 names. i considered to do my name in 1 3 3 7 too, but kept it with the K's in caps. our friend grendel has seen our noob impersonations used 1 3 3 7 did some research and then posted some topic that using 1 3 3 7 makes you a noob. a newbie is someone who is eager to learn more, listens and they form one hell of a meatshield for our veterans (just a joke but remember the NS community throws newbies in the rain or uses them as meatshields and i am aware that veterans cannot win the game alone) a noob is actually a other word for several wrongdoings and disobedience(someone who doesn't listen and whines for weapons all the time and doesn't build **** and goes out the base alone everywhere except the waypoint).

the moral is that having a 1 3 3 7 5P34K name or using it is alright but don't overdo it.another moral is that calling someone a noob is a bad thing, only use it when someone is behaving like mentioned above.

and grendel, don't try to seek argeuments with others, it is as irritating as being called hackernoob for my 1 3 3 7 lerk 'helicopter' technique

i automatically dismiss anyone using the term "n00b" as being an idiot. really only something you see people in halflife saying, im guessing it has major CS connotations... and its just the dumbest insult around. essentially, using the word n00b truly does make you one.

I dont call people n00bs but I have always thought that Newbie was a more politicaly correct (if there ever was such a thing) term for a new person to NS. We were all new players at one point. And hey I never bothered to read the manual either lol.

Just becasue you are a new person to NS doesnt mean you are totaly useles. I mean hey my roomate is a total god in Quake. He saw me playing NS one day and asked to try. The comm fixed him up with some HA and HMg and sent him off in a group to attack a hive. Having never played NS before he had 12 kills in under 10 min. He then got accused of hacking but hey, this NS noob sure proved his worth.

I usualy try to help new people so they dont make the same mistakes again. this helps in the long run.

*/sarcastic/ So, If I use numbers with letters, I am a n00b? Hell, then I must be. */sarcastic/

And its not really your job to controll the community and what they say, its the mods. We cannot do anything, we are at thier whim, what they say, we have to do. If you just say "Stop namecalling" no one will listen really...

"leet speek only uses certain numbers to replace letters

The type above with slash marks was old leet, it was evolved to the number system because of time consuption I guess....but I can type pretty fast like that.

I can put letters together into a coherent sentance, but I can also speek my mind in leet, and that does not make me a "newbie"

I find it a pretty stupid insult. Mostly it's used by true n00bs to insult others. Example: a few days ago I only gave hmg(one gl)/ha/welder to the 4 best people on the team. Naturally the other 3 thought I was being a little harsh and called me a n00b amongst other things. Tip, if we're winning againt a good alien team, the comm is not a n00b. One of them was begging (read: spamming) something fierce and didn't understand that I wasn't going to drop 60 res on someone who was asking how to buy weapons 3 games ago. Especially when we lost 3 of our 4 res because the HA's were busy, the LAs were busy bitching and I was distracted by both. Best I could do was recycle the 3rd. Standing in base bitching as our rts go to hell is not going to get you 60 res worth of gear, sorry. We end up winning and I'm still a n00b, meh whatever... those are typically the people who use n00b as insults.

But to use n00b as a reference to n00b-like entities () is perfectly fine. As long as it's not obviously directed at a specific person. Of course you can use it, it just makes you look like an idiot IMO.

Kingkupo I didnt read your entire post but I agree that saying "leet speak" words in character is ok. In fact, I think I stated that in my original post. But dumbasses that call others "n00b" just because they're losing a computer game are the ones failing in life.
