does anyone have trouble with voicecom in the commander chair? - mine works great when I'm a grunt, but as soon as I com, no one can hear me. Fortunatly, this only happens about 1/2 the time, but it can leave me shouting in my room with no one hearing. it has even lead to a 2 hive lock down resulting in a loss cause the troops couldn't hear me for directions. any solutions? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
Pepe, i'm pretty sure that's because your system can't handle what's being shown on the screen. If you get under, say, 15fps? (Complete guess) your mic starts messing up.
The reason it only does it half the time, is because some maps are much more hardware intensive.
I comm all the time and I don't have a mic and I can say without exaggerating that I've won about 75% of my games. It's all about knowing what you want your marines to do and knowing how to get them to do it. Have quick concise plans, give incentives, work with the people who are working with you, and don't tolerate those who don't follow orders.
PS: I type really fast.
PPS: I admit all the above I can probably do faster with a mic.
Ugh, voice_loopback 1 makes the worst echo you could possibly imagine. And the weird thing is I don't use speakers either, i have a headset. If I really want to annoy people I set voice_loopback 1 and say something like "GET TO COMP CORE!!!" and they get to hear it echo 4 or 5 times. Other then that it is an extreme nuisance.
Good thread. One of the big reasons I never want to leave the Half-life engine is the built-in voice support. It's really hard to go back to other more "primitive" engines that don't support this.
As far as voice goes in 1.1, there are a couple changes that should help. You can mute people easily, and the commander can talk to just the selected players by holding his crouch key while talking. These should help clear up communication a bit for both sides.
Of course, scouting is about 5 times as necessary in 1.1, so you'll probably need to be communicating more, but that's the price of progress.
voice_loopback 1 is essential when you record demos and use your mic much in that demo. otherwise your mic wont be recorded in the demo and the viewer misses your voice in a dialoque.

I just had a comm game where I only used typing and waypoints despite being on a french server (at least I understood what the marines were saying)
It was on tanith... We took the reactor room with good guys but one infiltrated satcom... so finally I dropped him a turret factory... and things started to get wacky. 2 guys trying to siege satcom but finally got owned by skulk rush (after trying to plant an armory under the hive...) so we fall back to RR and successfully defend it , I reinforce it like mad and even build stuff here , obs and proto lab , without phase <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> Then a few guys randomly run around harassing ennemy WoLs supporting 2 heroic marines holding the satcom entrance (TF held them alive until a fade came in and destroyed everything)
Meanwhile we secure waste handling hive ; yet they took fusion and we fight for both cargo and reactor room. Seeing a few skulks leaping (and tearing my marines apart) I give JP and GL to a guy to build siege in the vents near fusion... almost works but a smart fade crouched here and took out the TF and sentry <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
Then it's havoc... big fights in RR though courageous marines put a harsh resistance w/ JP HMG fades take waste handling , I orded a few guys to come take it back and finally build the <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> in the fusion vents. But RR is falling , so confusion is greater and I discover too late that a sneaky skulk ate all the IPs. Desesperately trying to kill him , I get munched and it's GG.
what did I do wrong ? Ok I did a few stupid mistakes like building arms lab at start and not upgrading much , but later in the game it was impossible to concentrate and accurately order players. I doubt voicecomm would have made it... the comm slowly grows ADD and mostly drops sentries and medpacks while following his favorite sneaky JP/HA squad (mine died unfortunately)
Am I the only one in the world who would like to have the option of inter-team voice comm? It would make those 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 games so much more fun.

Its obviously easier to command with voice comms, but its only really worth it in clan games.
I always mute in pubs though becuase 99.9% of the time all thats being said is a constant stream of irrelevant crap or a constant stream of endless bitching, comms in pubs are a no no.
I almost NEVER use my mic cause of my voice. I'm a 13-year-old and I still think my voice is high. How old is the average person when he starts talking like a man in mic?
I doubt I could play without it. I dread having to stop to type, so why not use a microphone.
If you have a microphone and dont want to use it. That's fine - it's your handicap for having to stop and type. If you don't stop and type then the chances are you're not letting your team know key events. There are several key events to report in most NS games. These can help your team mates out and therefore enhances team play.
For those of you that have lost hope with voice due to spammers. v1.1 has fixed the muting problem. There will always be spammers. To be honest, I could be laughing about something with a clan mate and someone will class it as spam. Spam will always be around. Just mute and continute to use mic.
Maybe because there are always admins on my regular server (Mr Men), spam doesn't bother me too much. I use all seeing eye which shows the country a server is located in, what bothers me is when a entire spanish speaking clan logs on to a UK one. I have nothing against the spanish or any foreign country but coming onto a English server and drowning the voice channel out with a foreign language is pure spam. It is not on.

To everyone I have ever played with who has yelled death threats, made racist comments, played mp3s (repetitive ©rap ones too), screamed like little girls, mewed like a kitten over and over and over and over, requested ha/hmg/jp at the same time (when playing as aliens), abused n00bs who really dont know better, or just.... been noisy and retarded...
...um...
... Please don't. Cheers (not really in the mood for flaming).
BTW good work Flayra, you are truly "t3h l337" ^_^
It varies from boy to boy. 11-15? Mine was so gradual I didn't notice. Its great when you can scream across a football pitch without your voice breaking up.
Use your mic, people will take the **** sometimes but it happens to everyone. Also, so many female NS players now, taking the **** is wearing thin.

I certainly wouldn't be playing now if I didn't use my mic. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

However, if he's a marine and I'm a skulk, then it's a good thing <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Voice comm between the teams would be nice, although would open up a whole new world of comm spam (not to mention people using the wrong voice comm and alerting the other team as to their tactics).
But it was hilarious when you were dead in .03, and you heard someone shout "OMG?! THey are in the sewer, 3 of you get there via vent, now!"
Thank you Mr "I don't-understand-others-can-hear-me-while-i'm-dead-in-.03"
