<div class="IPBDescription">criminally underrated bands of all time?</div> Like the topic says, 3, and only 3 bands/ artists, that in your opinion never got the credit / recognition they deserved.

1) Funkadelic

The only people other than James Brown who have a realistic claim on "inventing the funk". Waaay ahead of their time, largely unknown outside America. Bizarre.

2) Suicidal Tendencies

Preceded the whole rap / metal thing by at least 15 years. Never quite fit into "punk" or "metal".
Too "punk" for metal fans, too "technical" for punk fans. It's also a crime that "Possessed to Skate" never made it onto a "Tony Hawks" soundtrack.

again , largely ignored by the masses.

3) Faith no More

Ok, they sold plenty records, but they almost single handedly saved metal from the hell of "Big Hair" and "the 10 minute guitar solo".

They deserved cookies that they never got.

Discuss.

(If Kazaa wasn't dodgy territory, I'd advise all you young broadband monkeys to at least check out a few of these bands btw..)

    <li>The Eels:

Making quite possibly the best music I ever heard, they do everything to keep themselves from getting the mainstream recognition they deserve.

    <li>Bright Eyes:

I think some sites offer their current single, 'From a balance beam', for legal download. Get it, listen to it, and tell me they're as big as they should be.

    <li>Zero Down:

One of the best 'political' punkbands I know of, the untimely death of their lead singer prevented a rise of their star.

Bright Eyes are hardly underrated - the music press falls over itself trying to heap praise onto Conor Oberst.

Mindless Self Indulgence. no one says they like them, because its embarrasing, but after listening to their most famous song F.aggo.t (without periods) once or perhaps a second time, you will be in love with MSI, and wish you didnt look like an old dullard at their concerts.

1)The Aquabats. I know these guys have more than a few bands out there, but they need more, MANY MORE!

2)The Jonee Earthquake Band. They're local so they have an excuse, but they are just that good. Rockabilly is where it's at man!

3)Snail Ramp. I don't know how big they are overseas, but I've never met anyone else who has even heard of these guys, and they play some of the best straight-up fast-paced(albiet low-horned) ska around.

I've never heard the Bright Eyes, but all the Emo kiddies in the US love them. Underated bands...

    1) Millencollin- European punk rock never sounded sooo good.
    2) CKY- They're a band thats kinda/sorta apart of the show Jackass. Killer music.
    3) Offspring- Not underated in the sense of popularity, but underated with respect. They signed with Columbia and automatically became sellouts. Its a pretty big acheivement to be around after 13 years of music, especially in the Punk/Rock genre where bands come and go really easily. They've kept their albums original and the music is still pretty good. 'Defy You' is the best song ever :-)

Naw, "intermission". A friend of mine played the CD at work (<i>video game retail</i>) once a few years ago, and his boss was in tears from laughing when that 'song' was on. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

It's always irritated me that as soon as a band either signs to a major label or sells more than 3 records they automatically seem to become "teh sellout corporate hoes!11".

    Utterly ridiculous.

    Ridiculous yet true.

Of course, I was never too fond of Offspring to begin with. I like my punk of the east-coast variety, and my ska from Cali.

oh, and funkadelic like "play that funky music, white boy?"

    and hmm....
well, I can't think of a third one.

Well, only one of my favorite bands is really "underrated", I guess.

That would have to be 311. They deserve much more success then they get.

    <b>Muslimgauze </b>

Muslimgauze is well-known to some, but unfortunately utterly obscure to others. Muslimgauze, a.k.a. Bryn Jones (1961-1999), managed to create a stunningly wide discography durring its existence. The music is almost impossible to pin down accurately, since in terms of music it is unique. The songs are mostly either ambient or heavily rhythm-based, noisy, looping tracks that contain arabic melodies and singing. Very creative stuff, and sometimes beautifully twisted. Recommended songs:
    1. Last Mosque of Herzegovina
    2. Return of Black September
    3. Old Bombay Vinyl Junkie
    4. Shisla Nain Royal Bidjar

    <b>Converter</b>

Converter is aggressive, distorted, fast-paced and violent, or slow, cold, atmospheric and creepy, sometimes all these things in a single song. Converter (Scott Sturgis, also the brain behind the now-defunct Pain Station) fills all your rhythmic noise needs. The tracks are well-crafted multi-layered wonders of mechanic noise and powerful rhythmic structures. Recommended songs:
    1. Death Time (remix)
    2. Monster
    3. Conqueror
    4. Denogginizier

    <b>Venetian Snares</b>

Venetian Snares has gained some recognition both within the industrial crowd and the IDM-bent techno population. I would beg you all to order his album Doll Doll Doll from <a href='http://www.klangstabil.com/hymen' target='_blank'>Hymen Records</a> because maybe if the sales of Doll... went up, he'd stop releasing an album a month and instead take a bit longer to focus his genius and talent, and create tracks with clearly planned structure instead of stuff that sounds like 50 broken drum machines attacking a single sample all at once. What makes Doll Doll Doll unique is that it is probably the darkest, meanest and most twisted record I have ever heard (and this includes all that misogynist power electronics stuff as well). The music is broken, mostly in 7/8 tempo and mostly consists of hectic drum patterns that constantly vary and find new ways to attack the listener. Sometimes the songs are light and airy, but don't let it fool you: This disc is a claustrophobic trip to places you'd rather not visit in person. Recommended songs:
    1. All the Childred are Dead
    2. Dollmaker
    3. Pygmalion

Sloan isn't so underrated... I've heard them, seen 3 of their music videos as well (MuchMusic - from Canada). Only know of "Money City Maniacs" and "The Other Man" though.

Dream Theater seem terribly underrated. At least, no-one I know even knows about them.

God, i am so with you on that one, Venetian Snares are amazing, especially his work with Speedranch on Making Orange Things. Extremely dirty, distorted drum n bass with white noise breaking your speakers over the top. Bliss

*puts on Venetian Snares vs Speedranch - Molly's Reach Around*

As for who i feel are the most underrated. Hmm.

<b>Devil Doll</b> - Probably the most unique "band" i've ever had the fortune to listen to. Classical music, sinister operatic vocals mixed with distorted guitars and twisted spoken verse. This Italian band are true musicians (when i say musicians, i really mean musician, the genius that is Mr Doctor) and create some of the most beatiful, awe-inspiring, music. It can only really be stereotyped as a gothic rock opera. Which isn't exactly a huge pigeonhole.

<b>King Prawn</b> - London based Dub / Hip Hop / Ska / Punk band. Similarities to Sublime, Mad Caddies and lots of other bands. Babar Luck is crazy.

    And last, but not least,

<b>Ween</b> - Have gained some recognition and are pretty well known, but not enough. They may just come across as weird or strange initially, but songs like <i>Mutilated Lips</i> are so deep and beautiful songs it's hard to dismiss them as another crazy rock band. Sadly, their musical genius (akin to Primus in this aspect) is greatly overshadowed by how weird they seem.

    hmmmmm....
    1. Amon Tobin: All the best things about modern electronica, without the harrassment of the harsh tones, seems to be a kind of 'filmic junglism' built around real world type sounds over synthasisers.
tracks worth a mention: Tripple Science, Back from where, Chronic tronic [all from 'out from out where']

    2. Radiohead: now before yaal start telling me their not under-rated, i guess it depends on your definition of the word. regardless, they make some damn fine music, nuff respect to my hero thom yorke. they constantly strive for new sounds, and seem to be adapting well to the post rock/ neo-electonic current climate <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->, old becomes new anyone?.
tracks worth a mention: Sail to the moon, Like spinning plates, Lucky [get the live versions if u can find em]

    3. Yoko Kanno: Im cheating now, but lately ive been REALLY getting into the musical delights of yoko kanno, famous most recently for her works on anime TV series Cowboy Bebop, and Ghost in the Shell.
Have you ever listened to cowboy bebop? swear to god, when i watch jupiter jazz, with the track 'space lion' i could cry.... uhh, anyway. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> *ahem*. yeah shes into classical/ jazz/ electronica and fuses it all so beatifully.
tracks worth a mention: Space lion, Cyberian dolls house [If youv not seen cowboy bebop, where the hell have you been since 98?]

:EDIT: checking out venetian snares, thats some ****ed up **** right there. im still not convinced it works, find myself loosing the rhythm often, but its certainly an interesting listen! seems to be from the school of aphex, and then some! :o

I just hope he gets his stuff together and the upcoming Nymphomatriarch album (created with Rachael Kozak of Hecate, available soon on Hymen) will be something even better than Doll Doll Doll was.

You mentioned <b>Devil Doll</b>, so I have to ask whether you've heard <b>Sopor Aeternus</b>. They are not exactly alike but do have some common ground. Songs like The Sleeper and The Dog Burial are worth checking out.
