Just the sheer versatility a physics engine like that can give a modder leaves almost no possibilities closed.
Think of how awesome even just a "semi-realism" mod would be on HL2. All "semi-realism" mods have some sort of shottie in 'em right? Say you're coming around a corner with your shottie, ready to blow someone's head off. A red team guy jumps down off a table as you come into the room, you lock onto his chest, and blast one shell into him.
Now normally, in HL, and all these other games, he'd fall down and become a corpse. Not in HL2. He would go flying backwards, slam into the table, and knock it over along with all the chairs in the room. God, just that part of it boggles the mind.
Anyway, I think I would make a squad based fps/strategy game. Not sure what it's about, but it requires lots of teamwork.
There is only one thing i want to know about half life 2 and that is just how big can the maps actually be. This is cos if they are big enough, me and a few other people i know are gona make a mod that i have had ideas about for 3 years.

I had some ideas in the other HL2 mod thread (link posted somewhere within this thread), just got some more.
- Some kind of a superhero mod. Either co-op with complex maps/levels or deathmatch with maps. Different superheroes to choose from with different abilities. You could loose points for killing civilians or something like that. Or you could also have villains in squad-based DM and a game mode where the heroes have to prevent villains from killing civilians.
- Stuff based on anime! Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion... which reminds me...
- Sega had this cool arcade mech combat game (action, not simulation) named VirtualOn or something. It had two control sticks and several mechs/mechas to choose from, then you fought on an arena. Also, something along these lines is the Armored Core series on Playstation consoles, only these have bigger arenas or play as objective-based missions. Something like this! With customizable mech parts, anime giant robot influences, giant cities with destroyable stuff to fight in etc. etc. =))))
In that case, Natural selection 2!!! Someone probably already mentioned this, but for the sake of repetiveness and naiveness, I say it again. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
bah screw you guys I'm gunna hog all my ideas to myself and make the mod for personal amusement only, then you'll all be like "Oh please let us rob some banks" and I'll be all like "Pffwa"
I've never actually played the game, but I read te gameplay behind a classic titled Loom, and I thought it would be interesting if there was a wizard mod where your attacks were based on key combinations on your keyboard, and warfare with your opponents would be to cast spells on each other; some cancel others, some take some time to cast, etc. A hell load of combos to keep things frantic and insane...

Well, as for modding, me and a few people are working on the concept of "building your own black mesa". Basically, you have security guards, scientists, HEV Personell, and Construction workers. (There's ONE thing that overlaps with NS, and that's the commander view thing, but we're not sure that's gonna be in.)
Upon starting the game, players spawn in the 'initial' building, which is the class building. There are the characteristical equipment for the classes. The player walks into the equipment and becomes say, a barney, or a scientist. THis also allows for switching classes on the fly. Say if your a sci and they need one more on def, you run over to the building and grab a vest, a helmet, and a gun.
Construction workers build the rooms, or buildings. NPCs populate these buildings, and the players use them to research new equipment, abilities, more buildings, weaponry, ETC.
The security guards keep the peace (aliens teleport in at random times). They also keep a watch on the telegates (which go to Xen, HEV personell use them to gather rare resources required for some researches and buildings.). The telegates are two way, meaning you can enter and exit. Also, the telegates can let Xenizens through. THe gates are too small for drivable vehicles (which we are working on) so you would need to upgrade it to the bigger version, which allows for more res to come back, and more things to come in (or go out).
Scientists research, they have several areas that they gather supplies for research. They go the lab, and check the researching list. They pick and item, and it tells them what they need (like HCL from the Chemical storage ETC).
HEV will be primarily used for gathering rare resources on Xen (we're making it so the air is poisonous, so only HEV can go through.). They can only weild experimental weapons.
Have it that anyone could go through the telegates, but that they die a very.... unpleasant death. Like in OpFor, when the Scientist drops out of nowhere in xen, and you get the teleport weapon.

I would make a football mod...think of how great it would be...
The QB throws the ball by aiming using his xhair, then a projectile (the football) would go flying out. Whoever got "hit" with the football (ie the reciever or the defender) would gain possesion. +attack to tackle.
Or a gang wars mod would be cool...but not like the CS rip off that exists for HL1.
Here's what I was thinking...each server has saved stats. When you enter the server, you are solo, with no weapons. There would be lots of environment weapons to use though, such as baseball bats and steel pipes. You could join a gang, but only if the leader accepted you. AI bots (civilians) would walk around the map randomly, whom you could kill and steal their money to buy weapons and weapon mod's. By weapon mod's, I mean everything from laser sights to belt fed magazines to speedloaders, everything that exists today, but if the cops (another team of players) saw you doing anything illegal, they would have permission to shoot you full of holes... Kinda like an improved version of what RPHL could have been cept without all the problems they had...
I've always wanted to see an online, 3D Tactics Ogre/FF Tactics sort of game. Those games have always ruled. Being able to raise and train an army offline, then bring it online in some sort of World Domination tournament thing (similar to the Red Alert Would Tour tournies held by Westwood back in the day) and duke it out with other armies.
Maybe to differ it from the two afformentioned (and excellant) games, my little dream mod would probably have a different setting, like sci-fi or even modern day. I'd say my game would be a mishmash of Advance Wars and FF Tactics, comic-book-action-style modern day weaponry with infantry in close combat situations (i.e. in towns). You could train different classes in your army, like shotgunners, snipers, and medics, who would all become more effective, have better aim, etc, as they gained levels. A level 1 shotgunner might barely be able to aim straight without being ridiculously close to an enemy, while a level 10 shotgunner might practically be able to snipe with his shotgun. A level 1 medic might not be able to heal much at all, while a level 10 medic would be able to practically bring people back from the dead. Different equipment could factor in as well - you might start off with crummy AK-47's, and work your way up to owning m16's anbd such. Could have the potential to be very cool. Things would all be turn-based, though to keep things interesting there might be "action commands" similar to the ones in the Mario RPG's (i.e. press a button with good timing and double damage).
Heh, this idea would be really cool if I knew jack about mod-making...

Funny that you pick the one gametype the HL2 engine will be incapable of doing as the thing you'd like to see. No HL mod is going to ever be an MMORPG, even RPHL. 32 people in one area is NOT mmo. Sorry, it just isn't. We don't know the specs for HL2, but I'd guess that it won't support over 64 players, most likely a 32 cap like HL1.
