1.1 And Me

I'm reading all the topics for the Beta Discussion, and all I can hear is Monse whining of their being empty servers.

Let ME be a playtester. Obviously, there is room for more. I really want to do a gorge rush before they're ineviabltied nerfed.

Ah well, I can dream...

There are 221 people with access to play NS 1.1 (including 160 veterans). At any given time we have 3 servers up, but sometimes as many as 5. Most of the time, they are all empty, although the FoR server will sometimes be around 1/2 full (10-14 players), and Boob's server also often has players shortly after an update releases (and then no more until the next one). I monitor the servers all day via gametiger, so I can back these stats up fairly well. School is out, so 98% of the players don't have that as a day-to-day reason to miss playtests or not play. I know there are other commitments out there, but the dev team is made up of people with full time jobs and families, and we find time to play pretty often, not to mention work on the development process itself for the past 2 years, when I couldn't get a million CS/TFC/DOD fans to notice NS if I paid them.

I am not singling out any single person, and if you are someone who plays alot, ignore this post. But it is getting very irritating to have dozens of posts in the forums asking about when NS 1.1 is going to come out, or what's taking so long balancing it. The lack of participation is killing the development process.

i didn't want to post on this thread, cuz i'm not gonna annoy anyone about PTing, but i don't think that's right... the people that are PTing SHOULD be playing more than the norms. 1.1 should be happening more often for them than 1.04 for us.

School is not out, at least not over here. Most British people are right in the middle of University, College, or school exams. And because of the university I chose, all online gaming is impossible.

Of course, in 3 weeks time...

Well, you say that MonsE, but Flayra sems to be spitting out builds like a fat gorge puking up babblers. We've seen him produce little 1.1h/k, 1.1n and 1.1m in no time flat. The guys must be doing something right, empty servers or no.

(P.S. I accept that I can only speak as a guy watching from the sidelines, but from what I can see, you seem a bit overly pessimistic.)

(P.P.S. The title of this thread sounds like a NS sitcom. I guess wacky Kharaa-based hijinx was too much to hope for, though.)

    So... many... responses...

Fam - sorry, I was speaking in terms of US schools. I really have little way of knowing the school schedules of 180+ nations around the world.

Snidely - actually, Flayra kicks out these builds whether or not there are a lot of testers playing. He waits for a server to actually have some players (like last night), then makes dozens of tweaks and updates while he can during those few hours. He then vanishes under a rock again for a week in his mad scientists lab working on the code in a big-picture way. I would consider myself overly pessimistic if I hadn't experienced NS testing before any vets, many PT's, and most forum goers ever joined. The original PT sessions were a madhouse of constantly full servers and people yelling at me to get more servers as too many testers couldn't play due to full slots. So, I'm spoiled.

I haven't had enough coffee yet - where's the irony?

i'm all for the 1.1 playtesting so we know it works good and everything but i'm not for the way it was done. the only active league has now died waiting for 1.1 and the main reason is: what happens when you take the top competing clans and give them all access to the next patch (sure they will be able to test it better and scrim in it), they will stop playin 1.04 or barely play it. And as for those who aren't testing "WTH ARE YOU THINKING!?!?!" even days i'm working i still get 1-2 hrs of playing at 1 am. plus usually before i go to work. heh i actually prefer servers to be a bit smaller cuz i can play around more and see exactly what i can get away with :-p oh and i've always wondered, why on some .04 servers are OCs 10x more accurate and deadly then on other servers? anywho that's just my input.

yep MonsE, GCSE's are happening all over the UK. (GCSE's are the "important" exams you have to take which determine your entire future. A couple suggestions/opinions for new playtesting options:

This just shows that playtesting IS NOT such a fun thing to do as many of you seem to imagine. Let's assume you get your furry little hands on 1.1beta and start testing it. You play like a madman for few days and then, you start to notice that OMG! It's not actually balanced and you just lost the last 10games as Kharaa because of some minor bug/exploit on marine side. You stop playing it and just wait for the next patch so you can test it out again. Ever crossed your mind that 1.1betas some versions might actually be even more unbalanced and bugged than 1.04?

Playtesting is hard work, there are some great moments and lots of fun stuff, but serious pt:ing is just registering bugs and fixes and reporting them in beta forums before going back playing. Seems like currently pts and especially vets are tired with all that.

I've playtested three games and it's....not....glorious.
  • SnidelySnidely Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13098Members
Well, it might not be glorious, but it isn't that bad. Sure, you have to put up with the imbalances and the problems (bugs and otherwise), but it's pretty satisfying to watch a game develop.

    Then again, I've only ever playtested for one (small) game, so I'm probably just misguided. (;

And no, they are not testing on a LAN. The 4 NS servers are all that there are. Playtesters/Vets have no ability to run a server, even a listenserver on their own PC. We have h4d d3v h4x.

And yes, PTing can be fun, despite what people say. Some of the best social times I've ever had were when we were playtesting prior to 1.0 release. When moleculor wasn't on the server .
