<div class="IPBDescription">Bug or a marines best friend</div> On many occassions now ive seen regs silent bunny hopping, and the response u get when u ask them to stop is a laugh then most likely SUYF noob just cus u cant do it etc.

And its starting to really stress me out ive always looked upon it as a bug as such i never silent b hop, i may do other things such as stacking up CCs to stop the onos from eating the marines at 6am in the morning but never silent b hop.

I just wanted to clear this up bug or marines best friend?

Seems like both in 1.04, and neither in 2.0.

    Exploit.

We've gone over this like, 100 times ? Right ?
  • JaspJasp Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13076Members
Most likely but its the fact most of the regs see it as a way to gain advantage over the other team and even as regs they abuse it knowing rightly so they shouldnt this is what stresses me out.

And when u try and tell them this the response is just ignorance aswell as insults.

This could just be me or as anyone else seen this ?

It's widespread in all of Half Life (and Quake). Hell, it's considered one of the finer skills of TFC. You're not going to be able to casually stamp it out of players over a game of NS; most of them have it engraved on their brains. Just wait two weeks, you'll be fine.

Most people who use exploits refuse to acknowledge they are. This is a given, they try to give reasoning why it's fair by using excuses like, "It takes skill to do".

Well just because it's difficult to cheat doesn't make it fair now does it?

I could wait for 2.0 but i know once its out within a few weeks their are gonna be more bug abusers and cheaters and all the rest of it, this is what stresses me out they cant just play the game nooo they have to find a way to gain an advantage over the other team in order to win.

    Examples of 1.04 ones
    Silent b hop.
    Lerk spike script.
    Pistol script.
Building outside map with commander use (engine room) to seige it.
    etc.

I have little issues with a comm useing JP/HMG over and over it may be lame but at least its honest and doesnt invole exploiting or cheating.

It is an exploit of the HL engine physics that can not be easly solved. Skill based movement, wether unintentional or purposeful, is a bad thing.

You will be slain on sight for silent bunnyhopping on nano-gridlock, for example.

I feel many people, including those making half life 2 ("We don't paticularly like bunny hopping") don't approve of the activity. Rest assured, it will not exist in HL2, so find another clever way to out-"elite" your opponents.

Although any one can come to this forum and say just about anything about this subject (including myself) I know, that on the servers I frequent, with 100% certainty that the only time you could possible get in trouble for Silent Bhop is if you are owning an admin (Once I was banned from CofR and I wasn't unbanned until the next day). However we know the Devs don't like it (and call it an exploit, making it officially an exploit), and many of the most skilled players don't use it any way.

Bunnyhopping isn't possible in 2.0; however, marines can now move silently by walking, as is possible in Counterstrike. So if you want to be stealthy, it's still possible.

    WTH!?!?!?!

The thing that always discredits the "anti-bhop" argument for me: The ignorant responses about cheating/exploiting. Such as this.

Y'see, breaking open a bank safe is a skill.

    Doesn't make it right.

I used to teach bunnyhopping (and the rest of the game) back in the Kingpin days, fact is in that community it was considered "skill". In this one it is considered engine exploit (bannable on my server after 1 warning). The advantages it gives unbalance the game further in 1.04.

I say roll on 2.0 and in the mean time find a server that doesn't have regulars who abuse a flaw in the physics engine - some servers have already been mentioned above.

"Flayra, is it ok to use silent bunnyhop?"
    "Sure!"

Always amuses me...(see teamus vs teameu demos)

Silent bunnyhopping is an exploit, but IMO regular bunnyhopping is a grey area. Aiming accurately is like bunnyhopping: both take skill to do and give you an advantage over other players. The problem is bunnyhopping suffers from "not being intended" so some people adopt it while others slap a "cheat" label on it and wait for it to be removed. The latter will win out in 2.0, and I guess that's good because it seems the majority of NS players want it that way. I guess I can play Science and Industry if I want to bunnyhop.

I grouch a lot about the Marine abuses, but as it was pointed out. We only have 2 more weeks.

While I don't doubt that exploits will be found for 2.0, it may be some time before they become common place. We can only hope that the exploits that are found are minor in nature.

Before a few HL patches ago, there was no speed cap on how fast your player could move. This meant that if he was bunny hopping and strafe jumping for a while, he could build up tremendous speeds. The speeds could increase and increase infinatley. Much much more faster than what you can do today. This was definatley unintentional and a bug in the engine.

However, a certain patch came out which capped the speed you can travel to I think 170% of your base speed. When you are travelling over this limit and you next touch the floor, you slow down to your normal speed. Now, the HL devs could have easily as hell capped it at 100% but they chose to allow bunny hopping to continue, just at a controlled level where it doesn't ruin the gameplay.

This is why I don't consider bunny hopping to be an exploit anymore. It could have been fixed but it was kept in by the game developers. Granted these game developers wern't Flayra and co., but we all know that marine bunny hopping is being taking out in 2.0 and I respect that decision perfectly.

Silent bunny hopping I consider to be quite lame, however.

Marine bunnyhopping (other for comedy value) = wrong. I dont think you could bunnyhop with all that armour and a HMG do you?

Kharaa bunnyhopping = fine, they are aliens on speed/sugar/sunnyD/caffine/all of those combined , why shouldn't they be able to?

Silent bunnyhopping as marine = wrong, as in killing several cute kittens with a spoon wrong. It's evil and shouldn't happen.

Jasp, there is no lerk spike script. If there were one many more people would be abusing it I assure you. What you saw, is called a SPEEDHACK.

I'm not sure if I should say this <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> But since the lerk spike has a very small or even nonexistent cone of fire you can bind a key to fire it like [bind "mousebutton6" "slotnumber2; +shoot; +shoot; +shoot; +shoot"] Some thing like that were it would shoot really fast (No that binding shouldn't work, it is just a educational example <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> ) And that would make a lerk spike or any weapon for that matter shoot fast, but because of many of the weapons cones that they use the spray effect becomes apparent, but as stated before the lerk doesn't seem the have a very large weapon cone for fire so its possible to hole down the button and not miss much if at all.

yes. It's widely known. You can hold down the fire button and not lose accuracy.

Jasp that guy wasn't exploiting, he probably wouldn't know a bunny hop from a crouch jump. Everything he did was with the assistance of an ogc hook. But don't worry, 2.0 fixes both.

    Owned!

In another expression: Paintballing is fun, unless someone is using frozen paint balls.

See, when someone uses frozen paintballs it destroys everyone else's fun. Doesn't matter if you hit them 20 times with them in the groin with your "4ws0m3 sniping skillz"; its still wrong. Hence, if you silent bunny hop you can know that the other person will not like that... and tell an admin to ban you [for exploiting the engine with your "4ws0m3 skillz"]. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
