Don't overinterpret. All he tried to do was putting a figure into perspective. This is not necessarily the same as trying to trivialize it.
Oh, by the way, concerning the 'hundreds of billions' comment, I'll quote Coil:

QUOTE

Budget *spending* estimates, however, don't even include the costs of maintaining troops in and rebuilding both Iraq and Afghanistan. Its all very well america trying to solve the problems in the world, but it appears to me that half the time, america is the problem, so if they wanted to get world peace the easiest thing to do would be to nuke themselves.
if you go over to the middle east and ask people there what they think of america, most of them would even want to wipe their feet on an american's baseball cap. to put it bluntly, they hate america, they hate the world's only superpower imposing their "perfect" morals and society rules on thier country. it is that hate that forces them to hijack some planes and fly them into the trade center and the pentagon. i dont know how many of you saw the live broadcasts and the news items that followed, but the scenes from the middle east were scenes of rejoycing
that may sound a little strong, but most of you are american and so have a very heavily biased view. you beleive that the attacks on the WTC were completely uncalled for, but if you step back, or, like me, are british with a bit of knowledge about world affairs, you could have seen it coming a mile off.
America felt that she was invincible, towering over the rst of the world like a big mummy with a large wooden spoon.
it was not going to be long before the rest of the world rebelled and less than ten people brought america to its knees.
unfortunately, america doesnt seem to have learned from its mistakes and is, once again "pulling itself from the ashes" to reign supreme...
Update: and to make Nem happy: it was closed as I saw too many flames, generalizations, subjective nonsense, personal attacks, and the fact that it is something people are apparently incapable of being politely objective about.

All because of 9/11. 3,000 people. Do you realize that drunk driving kills around that many people a month?
Clinton, though not a brilliant president in himself, had great advisors ('cept for SoD).
George Stephanopolis is a brilliant man. So is Colin Powell but G.W. doesn't listen to him enough.
