Half-Life is rated M in the US - you must be 17 or have a parent with you to purchase it. Ditto CS and DoD retail.

NS, by Flayra's opinion, is rated T (teen -- though the addition of marine blood in 2.0 may boost it to M).

In theory, under-13-year-olds should not be playing it.

That said, I judge everyone on their worth, not their age. There will always be stereotypes... but there will always be exceptions, too.

Isnt 20 the strangest age? At least in America.

Your not a teenager anymore and in many regards you are legally an adult, but its not until 21 that you can do everything. Like be a cop or apply for many other jobs.

You cant be a cop but you can be a marine lol.

They dont trust you enough to buy a bottle of beer but you can run around with automatic weapons and grenade launchers or drive a muti million dollar war marchine around. The US has strange laws sometimes.

First off, I'd like to say I'm 17 years old.

I think that NS has too many intricaties for most very young players to grasp well. You can probably teach them to not sit in the chair, or turn into a fatty, but expecting them to not go lerk at one hive or following the commander's orders to the letter is too much. The whole strategy thing doesn't appeal to most younger (<10) players. I know I never cared for strategy games much until I played Starcraft at a friend's house when I was 11, and then the next week I spent over a month's hard earned allowance to buy it

Most young players lack combat skill as well, though I think that, as someone else pointed out, they just play the few odd times on their big brother's, or dad's computer and so they don't develop their full potential. I'm sure many young children could become decent NS players, combat wise, if they had the inclination to play often.

The whole "violent games warp young childrens minds" aspect is pure BS if you ask me though. Of course, this is coming from someone who played Doom when they were 6-7 years old.Besides having the occasional nightmare about being chased by some terrifying demon, I'd say it didn't affect me much. I played well for my age, though the concept of running through the level, killing anything that moves, and then flicking the switch at the end is much simpler than grasping the many facets of NS.

Anyways, I'd have to agree that NS is too complicated for, as you said, a seven year old or similar aged person to comprehend. There's games out there that would suit most of them better.

I dont mind kids in NS, its when they tell me things like, "ive played NS since it was on quake2" ...... it used to happen with CS also, where i was informed that the youngster had been plaing that since its beta tests on the original quake... he didnt even know what shareware was :S

I'm 14, so I can't really say much cause I'm still a kid.

But I don't really think that age is the problem, but skills and maturity. I'v seen 8 year olds act like some one twice his age. My friend's brother plays CS, and he is 8, and seriously, he is the most mature kid I'v ever seen. There are also some 20 year old guys that, when playing the game, they act like complete jerks, and just try and to act as the hero of the game and destroy the hive all by himself. I mean, I admit that I am not all that mature, and sometimes I act like a 5 year old when I'm having a bad day.

Skills are also quite important. You can't judge how good the person is just by the age. i have this friend, which is a complete Mortal Kombat fanatic, and when we were about 7, he used to kick some but from 16 year olds (and they were not being easy cause he was a small kid, since they were begining to get quite desperate )

What do I think of younger players... hmm, tough one. The following are just random thoughts on younger players.

I dont think younger players should be playing Half life, especially a mod that involves heavy team play, communication, and tactics. The majority of the time, it degrades my own gaming experience when I have to play with a younger person, in the age range of 7 through about 12. Simply put, the maturity of the average 7 - 12 year old is severly lacking in comparison to the average 16, 17+ person, and that lack of maturity could cost you the game in some way or another.

As much as people might think its a stereotype... maturity is almost always proportional to age. There are rare exceptions, but they are so rare, its rather silly to expect when you encounter some 7 - 12 year old in game.

I could continue with the bad points about younger players for hours, since there are just so many things in NS where an older player would be far superior, but what about their good qualities?

I, like a previous poster, have also noticed that younger players will make a great effort when they are tasked with something. Even though they might not fully understand the true intent of their task, they try to complete it none the less. At points, I have considered a few younger players to be my most reliable marines, and the most willing to follow my rather trivial orders that need to be carried out to ensure a win.

Now that I think about it, aside from their voices, I dont mind "younger" players all that much when I am playing marines. After all, reliablity is a key quality a commander looks for in a marine.

Now the 12 - 15 year olds who think they know everything... well, thats another thread.

I usually have a high tolerance for younger players, even when they voice spam. I was playing a game on ARS server today where the kid did pretty much everything you guys have mentioned. If we asked him to stop comm spamming he was like "f you" becuase he thought it was sometype of n00b insult or something. I had to leave that game. I don't usually leave games unless I have to. That one was just too annoying.

That said I usually like to see younger players. I usually get a laugh out of them. Especially when they're owning half of the alien team and th e admin is yelling at the kid for voice comm spamming and he doesn't have a clue what's going on. Those conversations are really very amusing.

edit: 19 btw, as if it matter.

I sometimes wonder how old those newbs are who never speak. Young people on NS is ok with me as long as it doesn't dip below 10, that's just wrong.

At age 7 I think they'd be better off running around outside playing imagination games quite frankly.

It seems more and more difficult to be a "kid" these days. People are having to grow up way too quickly IMO.

I don't really know how else to say this; but hearing a child's voice over the comm-lines just really kills the atmosphere faster than you can say "wasabi".

The ESRB rating doesnt do sh1t to be hohnest.

Im 13 and i go out and purchase rated M for Mature games all the time.

Its just a suggestion. My parents say its ok as long as i dont imitate what i see.And im not exactly that kind plays a game with hookers and then i kill one and i say, "i could do that in real life!"

I am 16 and I DO believe that people's voices should not be discriminated against as it doesn't have much of a barring (sp?) on their age/maturity. I didn't hit puberty until age 15 1/2 you see? And before that, people were always commenting that I sounded like a little girl. Does that mean I acted like one at the time? No. In fact, my maturity hasn't really changed at all but my voice apparently has.

Slap a warning on the game if we must:

Luckly my puberty just kicked in when i started playing NS about 1 1/2 months ago. So by the time i got around to hooking up my mic nobody else thought i was 13.

But erm.....lets not start talking about puberty plz? It think i already had this discusiion with my mom....

Age doesnt bother me much, i mean its annoying when a 10 year old gets on voice comms sounding like he just swallowed a helium baloon, but apart from that if they have the right attitude to a game, rather than just "oh the computer people are talking to me again" and understand its other people their playing with, then usually there isnt a problem.
• N1ghtN1ght Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15301Members
age isnt really a factor, i know most of the most obnoxious players in euro community and most of them are around the late teen/20 mark, i also know plenty of people under 15 who act infinitely more times mature than the obnoxious lot.

Personally, I think the basis of the problem with younger players isn't their maturity, but rather their ability to grasp, as esuna had mentioned.

I've always learned quickly, and never really been much of an annoyance (or so I think) to those who are willing to have fun instead of trying to be competetive, which is why I've always cut younger players slack, because I've always figured that they had the same learning curve as me. Sadly, though, over time, I've realised that, even though in society today, kids are trying to grow up earlier and earlier, they try and act like their tough, and can whoop up, which bothers me, sicne, their kids. Hell, I'm 16, and I still act like an 8 year old, but I know WHEN to do so.

It's jsut one of those development things, where some kids mature in their minds quicker than others, and are able to grasp concepts more easily than others. I totally agree that younger players should be able to play the same games that the older players do and have fun doing it, but, when they don't understand, and don't know how to address their frustration, so they take it out on others, that's when there starts to have problems.

Anyway this was jsut a random rant to stick up for the younger gamers that are halfway decent out there. Good for you!
As for the rest that think they have to prove soemthing to a bunch of Gaming Junkies, good luck kiddo.

I won't care if it's a 7 year old or a 90 year old who plays. What I look for is their ability to know what to do and what NOT to do,like talk about something not related to the game.If you compared an uber rare 9-year-old who acts like a 20 year old to that of your average annoying 9 year old,who woul you pick?

PS. Anyone who could help me get the mute buton working?! Every server I play in has these stupid *censored* talking about random stuff, like dinner :/

EDIT : Im 15 for the record.

I don't care how old a player is. But if your voice hasn't dropped dont use the voice comm. I swear that young kids yell into their microphone. The loud, high-pitched voice just makes my ears bleed. Often they are not saying anything intelligent anyway.

Perhaps if the voicechat had an automatic lowpass-filter installed?

It's not age that matters, it's maturity. I'm only 11 (12 on July 29th), yet 98% of the people I play with would never guess it. "are you 40?" "er, what, no, I'm not 40..." "dude if you're not 40 you're 50" "WTH?!"

It's because of the way I talk, I think. I don't constantly yell JAY PEE AYCH EM GEE LAWLZ as I would be expected to do, and people always say, "Wow, you're a really mature player, how old are you, 25?" Not to brag or anything, but like I said, age hardly matters. I'm not stupid enough to go play CS and say, "GUNS ARE SO COOL" and stuff, I mean, come on, can't you expect more out of a child? and I think the fact that my name isn't something completely unoriginal adds to that. Sometimes it's funny to talk to people and pretend I'm 30, though, and they always believe it.

I dont care how old the person is or if they use the mic, as long as what they say makes sense. When they discuss things, inform, or make plans related to NS, it's fine. However, a lot ( of all ages) literaly describe everything that's going on :

Ok, I'm walking, ok, oh no. it's an alien, arghh harh hhhr aahhh

Let's take an average(!) seven year old, sit him in front of a computer, start up NS (or any HL mod) and connect to a server.

Does he understand that he is playing with real(!) _people_?

My little brother plays NS alot, he's 8. I'm trying to teach him to be a decent player but have been unsuccesful as of yet. If I leave base with less than 50/250 ammo (even when base is getting acid rocketed to death) he says something like "OMG your not even getting ammo?" Or if he sees other people with a jetpack, he complains, waits in base, and if he still doesn't get one he votes to eject the commander and leaves. He's a decent gorge though, not great but he doesn't double gorge and knows the basics.
