What's So New About The "new Blink?"

MeatMeat Join Date: 2003-06-10 Member: 17200Members

A quick question
Is the new blink totally different from the 1.04 blink? It sounds like the fade winks out of existence, moves to where he wants to go, and reappears. Is this the case?

If so, thats so and cool.

I'm very interested in hearing about this as well, but can't seem to find any posts with in-depth descriptions of how it works. Anyone care to enlighten?

iirc you turn more or less invisble and run at a much higher speed
• MeatMeat Join Date: 2003-06-10 Member: 17200Members
More or less invisible, or just "not there"? For instance, can a blinking player do damage/be damaged?

Not sure if you can be hurt or not, but if I'm not mistaken, it basically gives you invisible no-clip mode with some extra speed, minus the ability to travel through walls. Blink out, move somewhere, blink in.

its more like a fire being lit under a Fades butt ..

he moves like .. 100% faster, in any dirrection and his image blinks on and off.

I honestly dont know if he can be damaged while doing so, but it seems to me it'd be rather silly if he didnt.
• MeatMeat Join Date: 2003-06-10 Member: 17200Members
You think it would be silly if he was ABLE to be damaged while blinking?
• DarkFrostDarkFrost Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15154Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
Blink by its very nature suggests you cannot be hurt by bullets, as bullets being solid objects, and blink (supposed to but doesnt) negates solid objects. The only thing even close to the manuals interpretation of blink is that in 1.04 you can blink clean thro a door, without it opening.

I guess it would take an entire map being made out of special "blinkable" walls and the exterior walls being normal solid walls (so you dont blink in the the abyss of graphical mayhem ) for the manuals blink to work :S

Whether or not it would makes sense, it sounds pretty overpowered to me to allow Fades to become completely invincible while blinking. The fact that any non-lagged Fade that saves his energy would be completely impossible to kill(without nade launchers/sieges at least) would be insane. Hell, I practically never die as a fade with 1.04 Blink..
• MeatMeat Join Date: 2003-06-10 Member: 17200Members
The fade wouldn't be invincible, he wouldn't "be there." When you activate blink, is it essentially making the fade into a free-moving camera, that can go anywhere (but do nothing) until it blinks back into existence. I'm assuming this is the case?
And when this happens, can anyone else see the fade or shoot it, and is there just a blue blur like in 1.04?

If you've seen X-2, I'm hoping the fade will just be able to pop in and out of existence and pull some Nightcrawler-type moves.

And does celerity effect the fade when it is blinking?

Blink is like the Fade's version of leap (bad analogy).

You click once and you gain a sudden boost in speed, though a single burst isn't very far. When a fade uses it, the model kinda goes transparent and see barely the outline, though its pretty hard to track a fade blinking across room to say the least. In my experience, you still take damage while blinking though nothing big since marines can't track you fast enough.

Rennex, can you hold down the button for a long blink or do you need to "refresh" it like Leap?
• rennexrennex Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2688Members
You can hold the button down and you keep blinking, though as of 2.0x, you can still blink with practically no energy left. It makes for Fades to impersonate Neo in Matrix Reloaded, "doing his superman thing"

Thanks for the answer!
And I hate to nitpick, but being invincible implys that bullets hit you. If you're "not there," they just go through. Slightly different.

I guess the new blink sounds pretty good, a lot more useful then the current one. But does Celerity affect it?

So...a fade essentially gains a bit of a speed hack when he uses blink? Too newbie friendly. I used to love seeing a poor newbie (or me) suddenly blink into the wall, door, hive (I tend to blink into the hive too much. too excited for healing).

How is fast movement better than instantaneous movement? Bleh I'm gonna miss the old blink.

old blink was the uber move, you just had to be skilled in its uasage. I guess to many ppl couldent use it to its full potential so the dev team dumbed it down

Well, also, it was really buggy and unreliable. Some people learned to work around the bugs, but somehow I don't think that's what they had intended when they thought up the idea. Now they've figured out a method that works with the game engine better, so we've got a new blink.

Actually, I believe that is how it used to work. But there where problems with it. Things like blinking into the marine base, taking a few swipes and blinking out.

I don't know if you're talking about 2.0 or not, but I do that all the time in 1.04.

He means being able to go through walls with it.

IIRC no-clip thru-walls blinking was tried pre 1.0 and was too powerful and buggy.

Blink has not been 'dumbed down'.

Fast movement is better than instantaneous movement in this instance because of the level of control you have. 1.04 is limited, you teleport once between 2 points in a straight line. 2.0 blink is a controllable high speed manouver that is far more versatile than the 1.04 version.

You are not invulnerable while blinking, you take damage as normal. Of course you are moving so fast very little will hit you.

For those that want a more in-depth explanation:

Switching to blink and pressing fire gives an immediate burst of speed with high acceleration in the direction you are pointing. You reach maximum speed in a fraction of a second, and keeping the button held down will continue to move you at this speed. The speed is comparable to a leaping celerity skulk, and in previous versions was considerably faster. You can manouver while blinking simply by pointing the blink in a new direction, since the speed bursts also work vertically this allows you to fly through the air, aiming the blink slightly upwards repeatedly to counter the effect of gravity. You can circle a room in mid air for an extended period of time before having to land.

If falling from a height, aiming upwards and tapping blink once will completely cancel out your fall allowing you to land softly.

Nothing in the game is more manouverable than a blinking fade.

Basically I think anyone who heard about blink imagined teleporting behind rines and slashing em to bits, only to be somewhat disappointed that this was pretty much impossible to do.

The new blink with some careful control will allow you to do this. TBH it's one of the first things I wanna do when 2.0 comes out

Since the speed of a blinking fade seems to be quite high, this seems to turn the fade into the alien that "dissappears here and reappears there", or for the marines, the alien that "disappears in front of you and reappears behind you". Honestly, the 1.04 blink was underused (especially for combat purposes) as it required lots of practice to get to work well, and often left you stuck in a building. This blink seems to fullfill the fade's teleporting needs quite nicely. The name of the fade implies that it "fades". It shouldn't just be a standard shocktrooper. This will make playing fade a quite unique experience I believe. Can't wait.

It's good that blink is so much more versatile in 2.0 as acid rocket is now less powerful and a 3 hive weapon.

Fading in 2.0 should be much more fun than being the mobile acid turret that they are in 1.04.

Sounds like the fade is now less of a chunky mobile acid-rocket platform now and more of a scary "Aliens" style alien as it was supposed to be. GJ devs!

Can I just point out that this means the fade can hovar without flapping? Or will I be severely slapped for saying so?

Um, back on topic. The thing I hate most about the 1.04 blink is it only works on FLAT surfaces. And seeing as mapbuilders like to show off with fancy walls, this means mr Fade hardly ever gets to use his blink in 1.04. Poor him.

Now all we need is somebody to release a scorpian fade model.
