During the conference call, the execs stated that for planning purposes they have Doom III penciled in for the fourth quarter 2004 fiscal year (Jan-March 2004) but added that id Software, not Activision, dictates when the game will finally be released. Activision also had other game titles that were announced as being delayed, including True Crime: Streets of LA, which will be delayed from September until later in the fall of 2003 and the Gray Matter first person shooter Trinity which will be moved into sometime into the fiscal year 2005 (which begins on April of 2004). Activision also announced that Rome: Total War, the console Call of Duty game and Quake IV are all currently scheduled to be released in the fiscal 2005 time period. Activision execs also speculated during the conference call's Q&A session that they believe that the successors to the current game consoles won't show up until late 2005 at the earliest.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The curse of Daikitana begins...first its one delay, next thing you know its being released for your grand kids on the Gameboy 2100! Half-Life 2's rule is inevitable now. Muwahahahahaha

Edit: i just have a feeling sombody is gonig to say 0mgz Nu8z0r VS w45 t3h l337 , now before we whitness a post like that read this and go back to the topic of no HL 2 competition and the waiting times for buying HL2
I can already hear the reviews
"Great engine, but it ain't no HL2"
*sighs*
We'll they're more or less right. Doom III has a superb engine, but it's so heavily scripted and the game environment is at a level of interactivity that can't even compare to Half-life 2. A lot more linear than an open-ended experience.

4 player LAN only? What the f*ck is that sh*t?!
Seriously though, I doubt Doom3 is going to be the complete dunger a lot of people are making it out to be, I believe the engine is going to help create an incredibly intense atmosphere, which is what will be the biggest attraction (besides the pretty graphics).
I won't rule out Doom3, but I think HL2 is going to pwn all regardless.

There's no doubt in my mind that HL2 will be a hands down better product, but Doom 3 will have a better engine. I'm afraid for id, that what made doom so popular in the mid 90s simply won't work now days, the classic arcade 'shoot-em-up' style game that everyone loved has since lost it's importance in today's gaming community. Now days, most gamers would rather use their minds and interact with NPCs in other ways than shooting em full of holes and running past them to pick up the red keycard.
Don't get me wrong, I know Doom 3 will have these modern day features, but it won't feel like the original game, and instead a new game with the Doom name franchise slapped onto the box cover. They have stated that a game more centered on multiplayer will follow as they want to focus most of their attention on the single player aspect of the game. Then they'll focus on creating a game centered around multiplayer "Doom 3 Arena" anyone?
So try to refrain from the school yard "my toys are better than yours" attitude, the more you build up HL2 in your minds, the more of a chance it has to dissappoint us.

It's the chorus (sort of) of the intro to Witch Hunter Robin.

As it looks right now, Doom 3 will be a game you play through one or two times singleplayer, and so few people will be able to run it in multi that it won't work well enough to be fun.
BF1942, while it gets 64 players, doesn't have like 500k polies per square pixel.
