Actually Carmack is using C++ for DOOM III, he used C for the Quakes. Its only part of the engine that he codes in raw Assembly, not the whole damn thing...

Doom suffered, story wise, from both an interesting premise, but poor ways for it to actually be carried out...
One guy fighting hundreds of thousands of foes can make for a good game, but a rather poor story [being that there won't really be much interaction between things, aside from lead to flesh]
If they're actually gonna start adding story to Doom, well... that could be good... I for one would like to know what exactly was going on at the facilities when these things showed up... or what caused them to show up.
Half-life 2 looks set to pwn everything, which means pushing it back probably saved it, as has been said... however, it also means they'll have to make the game better...
As for there being no multi-player... well, we're all a tad spoiled by multi-player in games anymore... anything and its brother, uncle, dog & grandma has multi-player anymore, aside from RPGs... and a few have tried [succeeding in the case of Secret of Mana, failing in a number of others]
I'm wondering why they bothered to unearth ancient franchises that haven't had an update in years. Anyway, when the first Quake came out, I assumed that was Doom. Doom = Quake. So now they revive it. They did the same thing with Wolfenstein. I.D. must be hurtin or something or they just following the recent trend to revive old franchises that will have little or no connection to their previous incarnations. Yeah...

Why not say Pitfall sucks for not having a great storyline? Why not say Contra sucks because of the limited weapon selection? Why not say Half-Life sucks because its linear and doesn't have multiple endings?
Its like saying Casablanca was a horrible movie because it wasn't in color...
[edit] Oh yeah, and I think Warbucket figured out the whole delay problem. [/edit]
Pitfall sucked because it had a crappy storyline. Contra sucked because it had a limited weapon selection. Half-Life sucked because of the linear gameplay, and only having one ending. Casablance sucked because it was in black and white.
Final Doom was the greatest Doom ever, except possibly for Doom 64.

Im willing to bet id gets 70-80% of their funding from engine licenses, whatever they make has to look good and last for the next 4-5 years. Im starting to think they arent making games so much as they are making interactive tech demos you have to pay $60 to see.

Though really, did Doom need a story? I think not...
