Coloured Ferai pic
I've finally decided to have a go at colouring by myself in photoshop. At the moment I am only messing arround, but hey, this is how you learn. Comments on what I am doign well/wrong would be extremely valuable at this point, as I'm only a nub, and I need to learn.
Ok the task at hand for me is to give this Some colour. So not knowing what the hell I am supposed to be doing, I find out what the dodge and burn tools do:
This is the result of what happened:
http://www.haxgames.com/furryskulkredux.jpg

After some advice from other artists (namely fam, coil, esuna, Eplekongen, snowfox, enforcer, visual mirage, kyliegirl and people you wont know - vijil and ignusdei - thanks for your continued support guys/girls )
I had another play around, this time slightly more educated than my wild random stab into the darkness I did last time. The eventual plan is to make this thing feel alive, with fur... This will take some time. I am still awaiting my graphics tablet to aid me with this (namely the fur) The idea is I will slowly update this thread with the progress I make with this peice, andeventually what I learn
Anyway, this is the result of some playing around, I actually think it looks kinda cool:

OMG TEHY HAF WOLFSKULKS F4F4!!!!111

Good work insofar Beastie ^^

Few crits-

The shading on the top of the front left arm is too pronounced, try toning down the dodging you did there and takeing to it manually with an airbrush of a color a bit lighter than the rest of the fir, and use thin strokes to get that furry feel.

Oh, Kudos goes to Deunen for the original sketch (pencil one). Thanks for the comments, keep them coming. Thanks to this pic I have worked out how opacity works in photoshop I will continue playign to see what else I can learn, and post results here if I think it looks remotely cool. If it goes weird for some reason I will post it here also, in case i did something right or something.
Thanks again for the feedback I'm slowly learning
Btw, this is from my story that I have written part 1 of. I'm goign to have a stab at photoshop art stuff before I have another go at writing again, my hands need a rest from the sheer typing I did, as does my brain lol.

i think you should go over it more and make it seem like fur rather than grey space. He looks a bit bevelled to rather than 3d. I mean the shading is strong on both sides but it doesn't flow into the rest of the body so it looks a bit odd.

hehe! your getting there beast!
looks alot like a wolf, unless thats the look your going for! perhaps work on some of the shading more and zoom in close and try to use lighter and darker greys to create a fur effect with a really thin brush, but paint them on a new layer so as you can delete the layer whenever you want if you mess up! =)

Still practicing, I've almost got the hang of the shading. I decided to practice on the eye section to see what I could do. half an hour of playing, and trying to get it right, and I come up with this:
• EplekongenEplekongen Join Date: 2002-11-16 Member: 8915Members
It is like enforcer said. The arm for example it supposed to be round all around, not at the edges and flat on top. You need to work some more at your benevell and embross. don't make it too strong so you can strech it over a larger space.

Actually the only thing I am using at the moment is the brush tool I am tryign to make this as much as I can my work, rather than a result of a lot of filters. So far It appears to be working, and if I can get enough practice in, It should look very nice
Thanks for the continued comments

the eye looks too human. it should be a thin slit, like the fade's eye tbh

I could really use some advice here guys

beast that looks like onos pewp D:, and its between meh toes
[/offtopic]

well eh the top pic is good, but as someone said earlier the shading is perhaps a bit strange around the front leg,and also you might want to add some minor shading on the body itself to "suggest" its shape....
- but the finished one looks neato

and the last fur thingy looks like fur as it is now, but eh i guess ill leave it up to you how to use that piece....
• EplekongenEplekongen Join Date: 2002-11-16 Member: 8915Members
if you do a large piece like that fur, say 400 x 400 and clone that on to and even larger piece you may just use the clone brush to paint fur on it, and then edit the edges after. Get the picture?

The clone tool definitely might be something to use, but be careful -- you will want to make sure the fur is pointing in the proper direction when you do it. Here are a few suggestions:

1) It's hard to tell how large this is in comparison to the actual image, but it seems to me you may want to go for smaller, thinner hairs. Resizing the whole thing down might do it nicely (you DID do this on a separate layer, right?).

2) I'm not sure how this will work, but try overlaying additional fur at lower opacity. Depending on your blending mode (you might try screen or multiply) you may be able to get some pretty convincing highlights/shadows in this way.

3) You can still see through the fur to the base gray. What you might try is replacing the flat gray with a Clouds render (Filters->Render->Clouds), where your two colors are your highlight color and your shadow color.

Lastly, don't be afraid to add some color -- blues in particular could really set things off (in a good way).

Following coils advice with the cloud thing for comparison:

it looks good, if you decide to use the clone tool, make first one 500x500 fur sample that points in one direction, then just copy that and flip it around its own axis to make it go the other way. and use the different sizing/rotating tools to make fur go horizontale and vertical.

And if you want the lines to have more of a wave to it in some areas some of the "distort" filters may work out well.

Ok, you asked for my comments, here they are. I'm going to be fairly brief, i'm tired as hell and don't have the patience to sit here and type for hours.

Whatever suggestions i did have on the fur can be thrown out, all the suggestions i was giving were if you were doing a more cartoony style of fur, instead of relying on heavy detail, relying on suggestion of fur and so on, but what you've done with the individual strokes is far more effective than any of those methods, and you are doing it very well. What i might suggest, however, is ignore the people suggesting using the heal tool, while this may save a hell of a lot of time and effort, the end result won't be nearly as good as doing it all by hand. Have a little pride in your work.

Let's look at the pro's and cons:

Individual hairs:

Pros
-Far more detailed
-Sense of achievement
-More realistic "flow" of the hairs

Cons
-Time consuming

Clone tool:

Pros
-Quick and easy
-Desired results fast
-No need to worry quite so much on the flow of the hair

Cons
-Will look crap
-Far less detail
-Unrealistic hair flow

There's a few basic pro's and con's with the two methods, the clone tool method will produce quick results but the end image will be of a far lower quality.

Ok, i know i'm not much help.

*UPDATE!!*
Yes I am back from Great Yarmouth (a place in the UK) and I have done a lot of work on my colouring, It's still far from finished (I have yet to do any shading), but the fur effect I have done so far I think is quite impressive. So here we go:
• MartMart Origin of SUYF Join Date: 2002-02-26 Member: 248Members
Needs more layers.
• Dirty_Harry_PotterDirty_Harry_Potter Join Date: 2002-11-21 Member: 9500Members
looks neat so far, but you should add some shading when you finished the fur part - if your not planning to do so already...

now finish it yes now hush hush

oh and the obligatory Beast Cookies:

/me hands out cookies.

This explains the lack of shading guys...

Looks great. I cant wait to see it finished. I think some hairs should be sticking out more, like near the ends of it's legs and tails. At the moment it looks well groomed...
