Learner, who as had been said, was becoming a brilliant tactician showed his brilliance with his next proposal. With the admirals permission Learner led the team to the surface, we met the manufacturer by the command bunker in glorious sunlight. Then Learner who had been given team leadership because he was right for the job, asked the manufacturer if he wanted to join the TSA, the manufacturer responded he did but couldn't due to work commitments.
The admiral informed the manufacturer that if he joined he would be placed on active reserved staff. The manufacturer joined straight away. The admiral informed him he now held the rank of materiel-general and would only be answerable to the Supreme Commander and himself or whoever followed him. He was also informed that the rank was not usable on the battlefield, which the manufacturer understood and accepted.
He was informed of one more requirement, he met and became one of our team. Learner presented him with his own helmet with the uv mounted light. As soon as this was accomplished Learner turned to me and asked what was his name, the admiral quickly replied Supplier, which was very apt.Unknown at the time, this little ceremony was to reap unfathomable rewards in the days, weeks and months to come.
With all the flame throwers and their supplies stored, the admiral asked if Del Iver wanted a quick tour of the battle area if it was safe, the glow on his face when he answered yes was an inspiration to everyone. The quarter-master quickly fitted Del Iver out and the tour began. We of course put everyone on alert to protect him. Luckily nothing occurred to mar the moment. The gods truly smiled on us. After the farewells we returned to our underworld. Our new team member was momentarily forgotten as we prepared ourselves for the ordeal to come.
Our new team-mate had, as all successful people do, taken in all that he could. Knowing his limits, he hired a highly decorated, well respected but retired general to supervise his new military supply venture. He explained all that he had seen and told the general to study what would be needed and then advise him. Del Iver told him he was now Adviser.
Before Del Iver had taken one step Adviser said weapons. "What do you mean" he was asked, whereupon Adviser said, "Proper weapons, the ones they have are useless or next to useless. The TSA has had to make do with lesser weapons, because of money constraints and constraints wielded by politicians in the pay of the corporations, and so has always had lesser weapons and equipment, they are just better trained and work in teams. With the right weapons and equiment they would be far more effective". "Make a list", said Del Iver.
The next morning Advisor met Del Iver and handed him a comprehensive list of requirements, stating that the ones marked in red were the most important and banned at the moment, but as the TSA was to be the force in space, the bans could now be lifted if the right people were contacted and the idea was presented right. Del Iver went to his office and rang Russell, an old time friend who was now in the United World Assembly. The Assembly had been given the power to intervene on behalf of any world or people being victimised and could ask the TSA to intervene. They were the new civilian watchdog for all known space.
Russell knew this had to be done to ensure the TSA was outfitted with the equipment to do its' job. Plus by putting this right he would fill his inner desire to have done something good for history. The choice of Russel was sheer brilliance, he wanted to do it for the inner glow not public glory. Russell also knew the way to get it done, and the people to do it. He started straight away and by lunchtime had succeeded beyond expectations. By two-o'clock his time, he informed Del Iver that he had permission to begin.
The first item to be rectified was a military grade commanders chair. Del Iver called the manufacturer and asked him could he and what would be the price. Chair not knowing of permission granted, laughed. Del Iver asked him to quote a mythical figure for ten million units. Chair said a figure and Del Iver said done, just make sure you have the first one made and delivered in one day, and to call Russell at the UWA. The manufacturer did, and was astounded to be informed that he had better hurry if he wished to keep the contract.
definatly love the story, really fun to read <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Absolutely love it. And there's no problem with the story length, when it's worth reading. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Though it does appear to be wandering into the realms of supply, politics, and future projection.. that or I'm missing the feeling of the sheer timeframe passing. Can't help but hope that each next part will slip back to Thinker and the core team, rather than dealing with how their new gear arrived. Good exposition, but leaning a little heavily toward it as a tangent, rather than following the initial thrust of the story.
Thanks and just the answer I was looking for Taliesin. And I WILL make sure to get on "track" to the [core team], it has wandered hasn't it. I will ask you to allow the story to wander for a bit, I had writers block with the CORE team and it wanders a bit longer, BUT I THINK it will be worth the ramble, the ramble allowed me to sort out things for the team. My story has reached 40 pages on my computer before it started to unfold the core part again, it took me that long to sort out their thing-a-ma-gigs, I got lost for a bit but it is getting back together, I hope you all enjoy. Cheers.
The new military grade comm chair was made and delivered in the required time. Chair went with the unit, and was amazed by the enthusiasm of the troops. He was perplexed by it until he saw what they had had to work with. He promised the admiral that every unit from now on would be the latest that research, technology and his factory could supply.
He spent the next hour showing Thinker and Learner the new controls and improvements. The best improvements were, the units were lighter, they had new software upgrades, they could be further upgraded by plugging in new boards, and they were backwards compatable with all older models in use. The new units were plug and pray. This allowed comms to make any structure or weapon that they had the blueprints for. No more incompatabilities, restrictions or workarounds. The TSA would be equipped with the best as soon as it was available.
The next item on the list was for a new type of powered armour, this was very new and unknown to anybody outside the industry. Del Iver asked for and was given a contact. The contact was a former researcher for a corporation that had his funding cut when the head of the corporation had been imprisoned for life.Researcher told Del Iver that he was out of luck as the corporation had stopped making the armour. How many units were already made Del Iver asked. Twenty was the reply.
"How do I get those twenty units", asked Del Iver. Researcher thinking that some criminal action was taking place, called the security force who raided Del Ivers' place, quickly sorting out the mess the security force informed Researcher he was talking to the new military officer in charge of equipment buying. Del Iver thanked the security force and calmed their fears, they were only doing their jobs, for which, he made a point of getting them a medal for duty performed above and beyond. Researcher told Del Iver that he could get them from the military impound facility.
When told what they were for, Researcher volunteered to restart the research group if funds could be obtained and a manager found. When asked who was the previous manager, Researcher suggested someone else. When asked why, he said the new person was a person manager as well as a researcher, not a toady. Reas Onble was delighted to hear that the research group was to be restarted, but was wary when he asked who was to lead it.
When told he would, he almost accepted straight away. He asked only one thing as part of his employment, he wanted Researcher to be part of the group. When Del Iver told him that Researcher was part of the requirements he agreed instantly. When asked, why Researcher, Reas informed him that the armour was Researchers idea, and that it had been stolen by toady.
Del Iver called Russell again, and after explaining the situation about the armour and how Researcher had been cheated, Del Iver asked for help. Russell told him to go about his business and that he would solve the problem. Within two hours Russell called and told Del Iver all was fixed. "How was the armour to be delivered", Russell asked. "By my own speedster", replied Del Iver. At this Russell asked to be the one to deliver it as he still hadn't flown Del Ivers 'Speedster'.. "Done", replied Del Iver.
Russell broke every record getting the armour to Wellworld. When asked why by the admiral, Russell said, "Because my friend Del Iver wanted it, you made his day when you inducted him, I've never seen him so happy since his son died, you have given him something rare, for that, if you are ever having problems call me and I will do my best to help you out", said Russell. "And what is that", asked the admiral. "The will to live", replied the general and Russell together.
With that, Russell left and again broke the record going home. Russell rang and asked Del Iver how everything was. "Fantastic", was the reply. "I'll have your speedster serviced and returned", said Russell. "No problems", said Del Iver.
The thoughts from you all are so nice here's more.
While Russell had been away Del Iver had called Reas. The next item on the list had also been researched from the same lab. When asked what was so special about the armour and the weapon, Reas told Del Iver that the armour was heavy duty but light weight, powered and resistant to enemy spores and acid, the weapon was special because it was made using the new alloy, had no recoil, and fired a newly re-invented and improved phosphorous round of .50 caliber that burst into flame and burned till the fuel was depleted.
"Where can I get some", asked Del Iver. "In our lab there were fifty weapons and fifty thousand rounds when we were locked out. The manufacturer was Guns Unlimited which is still operating, they only made weapons to order, they have already been cleared of any wrong doing or foul play", replied Reas.
With that information, Del Iver rang Guns Unlimited. His first question to Weapons was did he have anything nasty that would come back and bite him. Weapons admtted that the only ever shady deal was the sale of a gun to a soldier without any paper work. Del Iver then told him what the gun had been used for, Weapons broke down and cried, which cemented another friendship based on truth and compassion, the gun had been used to kill Del Ivers son.
Weapons offered himself for arrest, but Del Iver who knew that Weapons was not responsible for the usage, refused and then told him why. A lone soldier with a gun had killed his son, not Weapons.
Weapons promised to help fund the research group, and said yes he had a supply of fifty of the guns and fifty thousand rounds of ammo for the TSA. Weapons pointed out that they had been returned when the corporation was closed. Del Iver refused the gift, saying Weapons would need the money to help fund the research group. All future orders would be Weapons, so long as the quality remained high. Del Iver ordered and paid for the fifty guns and ammunition.
The next item, was a new and advanced sensor unit. The unit looked like a spider, moved like a spider, but had a new and advanced sensor array. The absolute beauty besides the capability of the unit, was its' price. Two credits. Del Iver explained the reason for his call, Sensor told him that he could supply four hundred only, as he was broke and owed money to suppliers. He was in this position because two corporations had ordered millions of the bugs, but now they were gone, he had the materials, owed the money, had no employer or cash, but worse no staff .
Del Iver promptly ordered ten million units to be delivered when ready, with an initial order of five thousand as soon as possible. Sensor asked for some proof he wasn't being conned. Del Iver told him to ring Russell and his bank manager. The calls took twenty minutes and Sensor was back saying four hundred were on their way but that the next order wouldn't be ready for a week, as he didn't know where his staff were.
Del Iver asked him to hang on while he made some arrangements. Del Iver promptly called Russell who said call the admiral, this puzzled Del Iver, he called the admiral and explained the situation, the admiral asked to be included into the call, Sensor was asked for the list of people and their last known locations and was told they would be delivered the next day.
"How", asked Del Iver when Sensor had hung up. "Well we have a staff sitting around at headquarters waiting for a job, now they have a job. The service operates in all systems so we can transport them straight away", answered the admiral. Del Iver understood and realized why Russell suggested calling the admiral.
A short while later, Sensor rang and asked why. Del Iver told him about the research group and their predicament, and said that not only would he get help with research, he would also make money by going into partnership in the group. Sensor agreed straight away, and became the second owner/investor that day.
Please be patient with this, I tried cutting back on politics and stuff to shorten it so to get to the 'core' and found that it actually lost some of the thread of the story, I was lucky to have had two copies so could restore it. The short version wasn't as much fun I think.
Another bit for you.
The next call was to a mining outfitter. To say that the owner was amazed was an understatement. "Why me", asked the astounded owner. "You make equipment for working underground in darkness don't you"? asked Del Iver. "Yes, I do", replied the owner. "Look at this and tell me what's wrong, for your information it's", "A Series V helmet, made of kevlar in my factory, and that light added on top is the worse thing that could have happened to it, I take it it has a function", asked Mi Nor . "Yes it was added on at the last moment to allow the troops at Wellworld to be able to see aliens, it's a uv lamp", said Del Iver.
"Aaah, a black light for black areas, can the aliens see in that light spectrum do you know, and yes I can make better ones. I presume they are part of a suit of armour. What material is the armour or will Kevlar do? I will need the specs if the material is different", said Mi Nor. When informed of the new material Mi Nor said he couldn't do it. When asked why not, he replied he didn't have the material. Whereupon Del Iver rang Researcher and informed him of the difficulty. Researcher supplied the details of the material maker.
Del Iver called the given number, and was met with a hostile face glaring at him. Del Iver quickly stated his needs and suggested the owner of the face check his credentials and return his call. Minutes passed slowly and Del Iver had given up when the face returned with apologies. Al Loys asked whether they could start again. Del Iver introduced himself and Mi Nor, and went on to explain the reason for the call., when the explanation was finished Al Loy politely but firmly said no it couldn't be done.
Del Iver a good judge of character asked what the problem was. Al Loy then told them how her father had the misfortune to be in the office of a corporation executive who had been arrested and was held by the security forces pending investigation. With no contact being allowed she had no idea of the plight of her father, which was was why she had greeted them the first time with such hostility. Mi Nor asked why that was a problem. Al Loy replied that her father was the only one with the knowledge and access to the data required for the making of the new alloy.
Del Iver called Russell who put wheels in motion, and suggested the admiral be informed. Upon hearing of the problem the admiral called the supreme commander who stepped in and explained the urgency to the tribunal. The matter was quickly resolved. The tribunal by this time had gathered such a body of evidence that the alloy makers innocence was quickly established. Upon release he gave his daughter full and complete control of the business, with access to all data.
A conference call was convene with Mi Nor, Al Loy, Del Iver and Advisor. Del Iver asked Al Loy about her father and Al Loy sensing the full import said, "My father was shaken badly by the implications, and realises that he is too old for the intrigues, so he has past the business to me. He will stay on temporarily to advise me until I'm in total control of all facets of the business. This is his decision". Del Iver nodded understanding.
Mi Nor was then given the floor so to speak, he straight away asked Al Loy if she could make or supply 100 tons of the alloy. Al Loy answered they had that and more in stock depending on the specifications. After a short delay, Mi Nor beamed the materials list which Al Loy agreed could be delivered immediately.
Mi Nor then said that the design would differ to incorporate the lamps, but would be made to fit precisely with the new armour. There would be no deaths by acid or spores. Advisor suggested Al Loy for the research group as they were looking for new materials research. Al Loy agreed immediately stating they could use help with a problem on a new memory metal.
Calling Reas and putting Al Loy in the loop turned out to be a high point, the two just stared at one another until a loud cough was made. In the midst of the worst of things love finds a way to spread. After listening to the problem Reas said a solution would/could be found. But a delay would occur as the TSA equipment research came first.
And I'd not meant to push, everyone has their own rhythm. Bring it back down, explore what you like. After all, it's your story. We're just along to enjoy the ride. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
lol, don't give him an excuse not to update <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I think the more details kind of stuff adds a lot of depth, if not overdone. Right now I am enjoying reading the story so keep up the good work. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Thank you for the kind words, here you are then. If you ever think the detail IS getting overdone let me know because I get carried away when writing/typing, as I'm enjoying this as much as I hope you all are.
As the call was ending I asked Mi Nor to stay. I asked for a delivery schedule and he said twenty units per day for a week then increasing to ninety units a day as everyone became familiar with the process, then it would depend on many factors. "I have been informed that would be sufficient", answered Del Iver. "I would need five thousand units asap, but I need eight yesterday", said Del Iver.
"Eight yesterday will be ready tomorrow, where to deliver them", asked Mi Nor. "A general Adviser will pick them up. What time do you wish him to call", asked Del Iver. "About two will be wonderful, why do I hear a but in your voice", asked Mi Nor.
Del Iver then told Mi Nor about the research group, but made sure that no pressure was being made, the orders stood firm no matter what. Del Iver then smoothed Mi Nors concerns, when he said he wasn't sure that Mi Nor was the right person to ask for investment. Mi Nors next question brought a smile to Del Ivers face, "Can I hire them for research as well". "Yes of course", replied Del Iver.
The research group was almost in business.
The next call went to the current turret manufacturer. Del Iver and Tu Rret just sat looking at one another until Tu Rret tried a tentative smile, that moment was the renewal of an old friendship. Del Iver had worried a confrontation would result. From the small smile Del Iver knew that a reconciliation was possible, but the next words said by Tu Rret opened a floodgate of tears for both Del Iver and Tu Rret, and went a long way towards mending the ache of both men, and bridged the gap between them.
"I'm sorry and heartbroken by your loss, and wish I had never said the words I did", were the words Tu Rret said.
After a short time, both men, refreshed from their mutual grief, began again.
"To what do I owe this pleasure", Tu Rret opened with.
With a healthy smile and a rekindling of affection for his old friend, Del Iver told Tu Rret of the needs of the TSA, but especially of the troops need on Wellworld. He went out on a limb and repeated everything that had happened since the turmoil began a few short days ago. Tu Rret looked at Del Iver and asked why he was so forthcoming.
To which Del Iver said, "Because we can't help our boys, but the troops need us and without trust and friendship we will not succeed, besides you are the best in your line, but without full knowledge you will be not be able to do your best work, the old equipment is substandard for what they will need to do now and in the future, and you will have to research and develop better and more efficient models".
"The equipment we supplied was exactly what the TSA ordered", said Tu Rret with an annoyed tone to his voice.
"I know, but now they have a budget that allows them for the first time to get the right equipment for ALL the jobs they will be called upon to do," answered Del Iver. Del Iver sat quietly while Tu Rret thought over what had been said. Tu Rret looked at Del Iver and apologise for jumping to the wrong conclusion, saying it had been too long with animosity between them.
Tu Rret then surprised Del Iver, by asking whether it was true, that constraints had been lifted for the making of military comm chairs. Replying there was no longer a need for restrictions on military hardware for the TSA , Del Iver told Tu Rret of the new equipment they had received, and of the new research unit and its' needs. Whilst Tu Rret was thinking about the implications, Del Iver received a buzz telling him he had a call waiting. Del Iver asked Tu Rret if he would hold the line while he checked the other call, "Of course", replied Tu Rret.
Del Iver took the call and immediately included Tu Rret. "Would you repeat your question for the benefit of Tu Rret please", asked Del Iver. Tu Rret hearing his name mentioned looked up, and seeing Reas broke into a smile while asking what was the problem now. Reas seeing Del Iver blurted out "You know one another"? Tu Rret quickly repled, but with a look of sadness on his face, "Yes we were the best of friends, as were our sons".
Reas knowing people as well as he did, allowed a minute to pass before he asked, "How can we redesign the comm chair and equipment if no-one will give us design plans and ideas, they all keep saying banned, banned, banned, can we get these lifted, if not we're finished before we start, you know we rely on ideas and plans to make changes and that the specs are necessary if we are to keep them within designs the manufactuers can work with".
"Still whining about constraints I see," asked Tu Rret. "You should know better than most Tu Rret", replied Reas. Just then I asked whether Tu Rret had ever considered research as a means to improve his equipment. Without hesitation Tu Rret replied that in the past research had been useless, as innovation had been quashed and made illegal.
Tu Rret then told of a bullet they had been trying to develop, it was to use depleted uranium, the powers that be quickly quashed it, because it left radioactive projectiles behind and contaminated the environment. The next thing Reas said sent Tu Rret quickly checking inventories.
Reas told us they had developed a vacuum cleaner which had the new superior AI, this cleaner completely cleaned an area of all radiation and debris, the best part was that it was programmable.
Tu Rret informed us that they had enough material in stock to make one hundred and fifty turrets in two days, they could with permission make fifty by that evening. There was only one problem, the bullets were not friendly, they killed whoever was in front of them. That was the one problem they hadn't solved.
Reas told Tu Rret they had solved the problem with depleted uranium, and red-facedly told how a corporation had requested the project, they had finished the research just days before the corporations collapsed. We surmised they were intended to be used secretly.
Russell was contacted and permission was granted almost instantly. Tu Rret was told about the need of funding for the research group and that a group was being asked to form a company. Tu Rret asked what the cost of the research was, but Reas said that had been already paid for, no charge. Tu Rret immediately pledge support and wrote a cheque for fifty million as his share, which he beamed to Del Iver, who promptly called the bank and had it deposited into the research groups account.
Tu Rret asked how all the material was to be delivered, Del Iver told him all deliveries were to be picked up by the new fleet that Del Iver had gathered, they were all brand new, super fast, warp driven transporters. They had been built for independant delivery companies, usually single owner operated. They were meant to be used to deliver urgent materials and personnel, rapidly, anywhere in known space for corporations without questions asked.
Tu Rret asked how could he trust them. Del Iver explained that with the collapse of the corporations the owner operators were looking at bankrupcy. Del Iver contacted them with the offer of a life-time which all took without hesitation. The deal was that they could operate anywhere, but if a call for immediate delivery came they did the urgent TSA job first.
The system was worked out by the traders themselves, who hired a small office and staff to keep everything shipshape. As they swore to serve the TSA first and with loyalty they were given written pardons for any previous crimes.
They justified Del Ivers faith and foresight, they delivered their first shipments that very day.
The admiral was informed of the new deliveries, he then told the team, and suggested they wait for forty eight hours until all the new equipment arrived, all agreed and everyone was set to work refining tactics and defences. The new armour was tried out and it was decided that for the first recce, the ordinary armour would be used as it was lighter, and made less noise. Again, Learner allowed us the luxury of six solid hours sleep, we awoke totally fresh and renewed.
We were just starting to get restless when the rest of the new toys arrived. They were quickly sent down and checked. We were amazed by the new weapons and they were issued to the eight in our team and then issued to any person who was going on guard duty anywhere in the base. The rest were issued to the best shooters. There was no grumbling, which I found unnerving,
I told the general of my concern and he had a quiet chuckle before he explained that the troops knew we were for the deep end first and we were the best and therefore they were happy, also he had made the knowledge available while we slept, that more were coming and everyone in base would have one by shortly.
Tu Rret sent a technician who had served in the TSA, so we were brought up to speed rapidly on the new sentry guns. We were very impressed with the competence of our technician. He went through the specs and sytems so quickly and efficiently that by dinner the whole base knew all there was to know. We asked if he had more time so he could show the men from topside the way the guns worked, he agreed without hesitation.
I asked the general to send down all the men for a briefing on the new turrets, he agreed and shortly we had everyone who hadn't been shown the workings, the admiral had pinched some of our men to man the communications etc, while he and his staff also came to the show.
We were equally amazed by the spider, the things it could do and places it could go, and the antics it was capable of kept us amused for a time. We then went over the plans for the recce. We had found the spider to be useful as a sensor, only out to one hundred yards, for longer distances it needed others to link with. We had people practise when they had time, ready for when we received more of them. The team put on their new helmets, they observed that they felt as though they had been specially made for the job and were not surprised when told that's what had happened.
The sentries tried on the new armour, and were amazed that they could move more freely and with more speed and strength than normal heavy armour. This had been issued to the first two layers of defence only. We kept the teams armour in reserve of course. Again the general had told everyone they would be issued as the supplies came in. The rest of the troops had been issued heavy armour which satisfied the need for more protection than light armour. I heard the questions about the recons' being forced to wear light armour, and sent the team to tell the true story.
Apache as it turn out was the best at this, everyone had heard of his skill, and when he said he chose to do his recce in light armour and gave a demo, they knew they were hearing and seeing the truth. They knew there was no way to be silent when in the tank as it became nicknamed. The demo was the most potent rumour squasher you ever will see. Everyone was made to watch and learn.
The next day the team started the first patrol, the first one over the edge was of course Apache. We had asked Spider for a personal remote and with little or no trouble he produced a marvel of miniature science. When put in wait mode the spider either climbed onto the back of the holder of the controls or sat at their feet awaiting orders. Apache was about half way to the first level when we heard him say company was coming. The rest of the team hid in portable boxes they had moved up near to the Wells' edge. It was impossible for Apache to retreat so he clipped himself on the rope and drew his weapon. This allowed him a free hand.
Everyone in the excitement forgot the spider, just as I was telling Apache to turn it off it activated itself, and we thought that the firefight was about to begin, I ordered the team to move to the edge and be ready to support Apache when the spider raced off Apache's shoulder and headed straight to the skulks climbing the Well, as it neared them it activated a hidden light which threw everybody as well as the skulks into panic. The good result was the skulks lost their footing and plunged straight down to the bottom.
I noticed the spider had taken pictures while it was activated, I sent copies of the pictures to the scientist and headquarters database. I asked that the engineer be given access to the data as well. It was standard operating procedure that military intelligence and base planners, were given copies of all field data.
Dr. Phind called almost immediately followed by intelligence, I spoke to the Dr. Phind with intelligence listening in. He pointed out a variation in the skulk, and sent waves of uncertainty throughout everyone, I had forgotten to turn off the all frequency switch so everyone was hearing our conversation. Learner came rushing up to warn me but I forestalled him by saying that the troops were entitled to know what was going on. I also said that uncertainty breeds fear and fear destroys morale.
Dr. Phind pointed out the variations and commented that the larger eyes had been seen before, although a difference was noted, the colour of them had changed. It was a private who commented that the eyes looked like the eyes of a predator from his homeworld. An aide chipped in and was about to dress down the private when I said I would like to hear from anyone who could shed light on our skulks variations. I then told the aide I was not an expert and I needed any knowledge from anyone who could provide it.
I again explained my life and my troops lives depended on the info we had. It was then an aide agreed with the privates comment. I asked the private to expand on what he was saying. He stated that on his homeworld a small predator had adapted to the night and their eyes had changed to a deep grey colour and enlarged pupils, and they hunted by seeing the aura of living things, similar to how kirlian photography sees the human aura. I asked how he knew this, he stated he he had worked for a scientist who study them and who had paid him to catch the Couy. The scientist had goggles made working on the same principle. I thanked him for his info and asked if anyone else had any info.
I then spoke to Dr. Phind, "Have you seen any behaviour that would indicate a fear of bright light?", I asked. "Yes", said Dr.Phind, "after we held them in darkness for a couple of days, they would panic and lose control when bathe in bright light, the effect lasted for half a day, and then they would re-adapt".
I explained what had happened and Dr.Phind nodded, he repeated they adapt totally to their surroundings after half a day. He confirmed the rest hadn't attacked because the skulks hadn't sent the distress signal of being attacked, and died before they passed any information on to the hive.
After a short silent wait, I asked Dr. Phind what the other difference was. Dr. Phinds' look didn't quell the uneasy feeling I had. The next minute engineer was excitedly babbling away and caused a general quiet laughter to occur. He was talking so fast not one person could understand him. An officer had to give him a shake to get him to stop, "What", asked the engineer. The look on his face raised a chuckle for everyone and eased tension throughout the base. I could have kissed him.
He stated in a subdued voice the alien had an echo bump on his head. The explanation was accompanied by a short demo of replaying tapes with the sound enhanced. If we turn lights on and can get negative noise or white noise generators made we would have another half day of confusion for the aliens, and after they re-adapt we change by turning lights out and making different noises and we have half a day again. How effective this would be and how long he didn't know.
The idea was agreed to by Dr. Phind, even to the time frame of approximately two half days, after that all bets were off. The two results being in agreement eased a lot more tension and soon people were positive again.
I then switched the all frequency off and had a quiet chat to the general. He applauded me my decision and answered my question before I asked it. "Yes, fear, and the thought of being left out of the planning is a bigger killer of troops than most anything else, troops know that casualities are going to occur, but if they think that the loss of life hasn't been given any thought they hesitate and hesitation kills, as you know", said the general.
The inclusion of and the asking of the troops advice and opinions was quickly discussed by the reserve troops. Shortly thereafter a delegation went to the admiral and they requested to also be sent down to help at the base, when asked why, they said they would fight for, and follow anywhere, a comm who thought so much about his men.
During this discussion the general had switched the top brass channel on and Learner and I heard all that transpired. Learner then said to me that he had thought the all frequency channel had been a mistake but now he could see the benefit. I then told him that he should always speak and ask, rather than keep quiet.
The general asked what I wished to do. Making sure the all frequency was on again I suggested to the general that when all the troops at base had the new arms and armour, he begin arming and equipping squads with the new supplies, and when they were so equipped to send them down,
The general asked if any particular order was to be used, I replied that for safety reasons he look to equipping squads who had the most experienced troops first and then the new recruits. To forestalled any whining, I reminded everyone that the aliens had been here a long time, and we still didn't know what we were up against, any mistakes will cost lives we don't want or need. After I switched the all frequency off the general again gave me a pat on the back.
While all this had been happening, the team had pulled Apache to the top, and had settled into their little boxes, they had awaited the reply and investigation from the aliens. An hour went by with no reaction from the aliens. The only action was from the spider wanting to get in the box with Apache. It was then it hit me, I knew what it was that had bothered me when the team had checked the Well, it was that the sides were mirror smooth. How could anything stick to the sides. I ordered everyone back to base.
This was so different even Learner asked why. I waited for the team to return before I flicked the switch and asked to be connected to Dr. Phind. Upon connection I again switched all frequencies on before asking if the aliens had scaled the walls before. "Often", answered Dr. Phind.
"What did you do to stop them getting away then?" I asked. "We shot them, why?" was the reply, "Will you explain how anything can stick to a mirror smooth wall", I asked. The answer to how they and the spider were able to stick to sheer walls was they both had the capability of transforming their feet or paws to soft disc/suction type cups. I thanked him and switched off. I also checked the all frequency was off.
Learner couldn't contain himself and again asked why I had brought the squad back. I told both the team and Learner, that we were going to go to the new armour, and make sure everyone had the new pistols with ten spare magazines.
"Thats' one hundred and ten rounds, the weight will make the team so slow that they won't be able to defend themselves", said Learner. I changed into light armour and had Finder stand beside me, and we went through some Tai Chan Go. Learner asked what I was trying to show .
I asked him to run through the steps and reasons for Tai Chan Go. While he recited the principles, Finder and I had progressed to the third stage where speed became important. Learner still didn't understand, it was Maker who explained it for him.The first stage is to warm up, the second stage is to focus your mind, the third stage is to gather speed and focus, the fourth stage is for speed and direction, the fifth stage was to find your weakness and speed, the sixth is for you to go as fast as you can, the seventh is for control with speed, the eigth is for slowing down with control, the ninth is for sheer focus, the tenth is for stillness and control. You know and understand that, yes. "Yes", answered Learner just as we started the sheer speed movements. We finished within heartbeats of each other, when Learner suddenly said they finished almost together.
"The demonstration was to show you that the new armour is fast and strong it just isn't quiet". Learner smiled with understanding. But then frowned with frustration, he couldn't figure returning to base and putting on the new armour. This time it was Scout who answered. "There is no value at all in going on a recce with light armour, carrying weapons that will bring the house down. As soon as we fire the first round we will be neck deep in aliens soon after. If the smelly stuff hits the fan we will need protection. Hence the heavy armour, but there is something I don't know there as well".
Finder and I had finished, and were out of our armour and wiping the sweat off that we had gathered. At this point I answered the questions they all wanted to know. I told them that at the first level we would find a hive. Having put the new armour back on I heard the general ask if I had just said we would find a hive on the first level. Answering yes, I heard questions being asked how do I know etc. The general was more tactful and asked how I came to that conclusion.
My answer, if the Well was twenty stories from the bottom to the roof of the ground floor, and twenty floors to the next and twenty floors to the top and so on how high was it from the bottom to the floor we were standing on. About one and a quarter miles. "I don't believe the aliens would go one and a quarter miles constantly just to check. The chances of accidents would exclude this. But 400 feet or so just a warm-up. But if I'm wrong, just a warm up for the team", I said with a smile. "Besides it's just a hunch". That shut everyone up pronto. "What", I asked. The team just looked at me with a smile.
"I keep thinking about those two skulks", I said semi-loud, I missed the smirks on my teams faces and also missed the answering smiles from the rest of the troops in hearing range. I called Dr. Phind and asked why they made no sound as they fell, and wasn't it a normal reaction to scream in terror when falling. His troubled look told me he also was thinking the same. I went into the comm chair and told Learner to activate all passive systems and to keep a constant watch. I told everyone via the all frequency that I was switching command to Learner so as to do some thinking.
I switched off all communications and let my mind roam at will. This was to allow my mind to free associate, as I knew I was missing something that was right in front of me. As in the past the idea came to me with the force of a sledge hammer, I dis-engaged the comm and fell out of it with a clang and clamour. Finder was there almost as soon as I fell, just not quite quick enough to catch me.
Learner was quickly out of his comm, but retreated when I snarled "get back" at him. I missed the look of utter rejection on his face, but Finder saw it thank the heavens. Finder, and by now the team carried me rapidly into one of the "clubs" and started administering medicine whilst stripping away my armour, Mule started massaging my back, neck and shoulders to ease away the tension I had gathered.
I was recovering slowly because I kept trying to get up, eventually Scout in desperation administered a knockout shot. I awakened on the surface to see the worried look of the admiral and general. "I apologise sirs, it happens occasionly when I make a connection that is so amazing my body betrays me", I said dazedly.
Uhh, sorry sirs, what Thinker means, is that when he makes a discovery that is not backed up by facts and is really weird, he tries to exit or move too fast, but his body can't keep up with his mind, he loses control, twists, turns and gets full of tension caused by all his muscles contorting, his body locks up and he suffers a migraine . We have seen it before now, but it frightens everyone still. We usually can help by the anti-spasm injection Apache got from the elders, and Mules massage, this one is the worst we have ever seen, is why we panicked", said Maker.
"I'm sorry sir, your muscles wouldn't stop clenching and I panicked, and the general ordered you topside immediately', said Mule with a relieved look on his face. "Thank you Mule, it was best", I replied. "Is the base alright, nothing has happened has it", I asked with trepidation in my voice. "No sir, just you, Learner is running things very well", replied Mule.
I had become alarmed when I saw the original team together on the surface. Maker answered before I asked. "Learner ordered us to follow when you were taken topside Thinker, he said we were too distracted and worried, he is becoming a very good commander rapidly. He now sees more sides to the situation". Finder quietly related to me the look he had seen on Learners face. I turned to the general who pointed to the comm and told me to use channel xp (experimental). I hit the button and waited for Learner to reply.
"Yes sir, what can I do for you?", Learner asked without any trace of emotion. I congratulated him on his self control which caused him to frown in confusion. I then explained the whole sequence of events, and what they meant. He replied he understood something major had occurred as the team rushed me into one the clubs and didn't return. He explained he had put people in both comms and had rushed to the club to hear the admiral order me topside.
He had ordered the team to follow, as they kept looking to the lift with worry and concern on their faces. He knew the team would benefit from being near me. The uncertainty of not knowing would eat away their edge and morale. I looked at him and smiled, I told him he was becoming a damn fine commander, and I apologised for the harsh words and explained that I had been thinking that we were unprotected, and I panicked.
He looked at me and said, "Sir, please do not lie even for the best of reasons, you saw me neglecting my duty at a moment of extreme pain and I'm thankfull you left it at that. I have learned a valuable lesson from you again". From my puzzled look he had a chuckle, and then explained that even in pain I had taught him that there are times duty comes first, and even whilst in deep pain I still had seen duty being neglected.
The general joined the channel and congratulated both of us for both learning lessons from this episode. Learner asked what could I have learnt, and before I could add my puzzled query he added, "Thinker has learnt that even a small lie to protect feelings can take away the force of the lesson, and you have learnt that decisions have to be made to suit the conditions, and that feelings or concerns take second place in combat situations, I think today has been very profitable, lessons learnt without any casualties except feelings mildly hurt".
I agreed with the summing up, and saw the generals point about lies, no good would have come of it. Just then a forward scout spoke a warning. Learner looked at me, I just shook my head. He ordered everything turned off and everyone into hiding. He then turned back to me and asked why? "You are the comm in the field not me", I said.
His look spoke volumes, He had heard the words but not truly believed them, nor me. He turned bright red and tried stammering an apology, which I made him stop, saying, "This way is better because now you know from experience how our teams system works".
The admiral turned to me and asked what was such a revelation that caused so major a reaction. I asked that Learner, Dr. Phind, security and all interested parties be included into the discusion, the admiral nodded and I then dropped my bombshell.
I told everyone we had at least two tribes of aliens. "What", blurted the admiral.
"We have at least two seperate sets of aliens, and the top lot don't want the bottom lot to know they are there yet, just like I didn't want the aliens to know we were here, I don't think we were successful".
Dr. Phind due to his better understanding and knowledge of aliens caught the link. "The two aliens fell silently because they were keeping the secret, they would be redeemed and so didn't betray their presence to the other tribe. It also shows a higher level of co-operation and co-ordination than previously known, we are facing unknown abilities here".
"Good, I was wondering if I was jumping too far into the twilight zone with this theory, that was why my reaction was so violent", I said.
" No, your conclusions were one hundred percent accurate, I agree with you, and now we have a major problem", said Dr. Phind.
"I don't believe we do, I think we may have an ally", I said. This statement momentarily stunned everyone into silence. Then a tumult began as everyone in the bunker started throwing theories around to dismiss my statement. The admiral allowed it to continue for a little while then called for silence.
"Why do you think so, and what do you base it on", asked the admiral. I related all that had occurred from when we captured the first skulk. I pointed out that the hive and the aliens knew when another was being attacked, yet no retaliation occurred. The aliens had come into base and had a good look around and left. Every time, they left after a short look around. Remember they also know where each other is because of their hive sight. I bet the captured alien has just been sitting quietly but watchfully.
"The telling points are, Apache was dangling on a rope yet none of the aliens went near him, yet with their new sort of sight and their echo location he should have stood out like a bright light. What are they waiting for"? I asked aloud.
Everyone jumped when a vibrant melodious "voice" was heard by mind. "Aahh, a genuine deeply intuitive yet untrained mind has come amongst us, let us rejoice". Panic was imminent, I stepped into the breech and forestalled any further hysteria by my questions, they intrigued everyone. "I would gather that you are a Mother Mind/Hive. Although I was informed that the species was sexless. I take it this is incorrect, and you know what I'm saying because of the skulk we caged. Does this offend you and do you wish the being let free". A murmur began, promptly stopped by the general.
"You are more intuitive than I gave you credit for, we have underestimated your species for too long, I apologise if I have offended you". came the voice once more. I laughed out loud, partly in relief and partly from amusement that the voice thought that underestimating us as an enemy would hurt our sensitivities.
I assured the voice that the only feelings hurt would be theirs for our caging a member of their hive/tribe. To which the voice responded that we were not at fault as we were not to know that no attack was imminent. I looked to the general for permission, with a nod and a toss of the key I knew acceptance was given. I asked the voice if names were required, the Mother Mind/Hive replied, "Gaia is my name and thank you for asking".
To say that we were astounded was an understatement. Gaia, with a laugh in her voice said no mythological significance should be attached except that the name was given by a lover of ancients beliefs. I had by this time opened the cage and returned to my previous spot. It was disconcerting at first to have a skulk rub against me like a dog or cat. Such was my preoccupation with my conversation that it was minutes before the chuckling registered. I had been scratching behind the ears of a skulk.
The damnable thing was, the skulk was PURRING. I asked Gaia if this was part of an experiment, to which she agreed with a surprised tone. "You certainly are one of a kind, or very unusual, aren't you, I'm sorry I do not know your name". Embarrassment flooded me, and it was a moment before I could reply.
"I apologise I presumed that because you could speak minds you had looked and extracted that information, I see you have ethics unused by others of your species, the name I answer best to is Thinker. Do you also have the ability to see through the eyes of my friend here?", I asked.
The deep laughter we heard would best be described as belly laughter, it was infectious and soon everyone had a laugh. "I have heard Chou called many things, but friend," the laughter was totally unselfconscious and terribly infectious, again everyone had a good laugh. "In answer to your question, I can, it takes a second for me to phase with Chou each time though, I must disengage each time, to allow Chou to take control for movement".
I suggested Chou jump up on the table to allow eye contact, we then have everyone move round to meet with Gaia. This would be less disorienting for both Chou and Gaia I suggested. Gaia approved this and it wasn't long before all the base staff had been introduced albeit some tentatively.
I asked if Gaia wish to meet the combat teams. Gaia asked if it could occur later, as it was a strain to use this form of communication between our species, after so many years without use. It was acceptable to all.
After the introductions were made Chou jumped down from the table and settled at my knee, without thinking I began to scratch behind his ear. The staff gave a chuckle and Chou joined in. It was eerie to hear that chuckle in our midst, those with combat experience did a quick check just to be sure.
Intrigued I asked Gaia how Chou could be the way HE? was. Gaia related to us a short history of the Kharaa, and how it was a deep seated memory, the full story best left for less tense times.
Gaia asked the admiral if permission would be granted for a melding of minds. Stating, that if permission was granted, a second person had to be chosen by the melded one to be an anchor. The majority of the staff in the command bunker cautioned against this, and raised all kinds of objections. The admiral asked if anyone could be chosen or if it had to be someone in particular, whilst saying this the admiral looked at me. The answer surprised everyone.
"No, any person may be chosen so long as they have someone they truly trust as their anchor, the anchor has to be aware of their own strengths and weaknesses though, as they are the link to the minds reality. I know twins from your specie are usually best", Gaia said. "I will not be offended nor surprised if you refuse this request as there is an enormous amount of trust needed".
The admiral asked everyone to discuss and put forward their views, most were either wary or against the idea, but the clincher for the idea came from Dr. Phind who reminded everyone, that Gaia could have forced the meld onto the admiral if she had wanted to take over as most were concerned with. The logic of the argument swept away all doubts for the admiral. Dr. Phind then asked if he could ask questions about the procedure. Both the admiral and Gaia agreed.
"This meld, some of our people would be better suited than others, correct", asked Dr. Phind. "Yes", replied Gaia. "What or how do we choose the best for this, is there a way we can determine who would be best, or would you be better suited to choose", asked Dr. Phind. Gaia answered, "I would be able to choose best, but I have found it better that you choose, trust still has to be firmly established between us all yet".
The admiral then asked in a voice to discourage any backchat, "The best at this time is Thinker is that not correct Gaia"? "Yes", came the immediate answer. The admiral continued, "By the simple fact of his gift and his constant use of it, would make the process easier on all concerned, am I thinking correctly Gaia". Again a prompt answer, "Yes, the application of his gift throughout his life has given his mind a flexibility others don't have, it is not necessary though, any other willing mind is right", said Gaia.
"So the person chosen has to be willing, I take it then that there is risk involved, if so what are the risks", asked the admiral. "There is risk, the mind has to be flexible enough to accept that it is small or more precisely, has been bound by constraints all its' life, this revelation can cause serious identity problems in some, this is why a second as anchor has to be chosen and with great care. The meld can bring great rewards or great sorrows, but at this time I see no other way to show the dangers of the situation we are facing with the speed needed", Gaia said.
"You are in as great a danger from this meld too are you not"? asked Dr. Phind. "Yes, if either party in the meld should for some unknown reason spiral into madness, the danger is that all minds could follow, the way back may be impossible, it has happened, I myself have a second, but even with all precautions taken things do happen. I caution you to take time to consider all the pros and cons, before answering", Gaia informed us.
The admiral turned to me and asked if I would be willing, reminding me of the dangers and that I needed a second. Without hesitation I agreed and named the general as my second if he was willing. All turned to the general who answered, he would be honoured, but he too had his demons, with an involuntary movement of his hand to his throat. I looked to my team to see them nodding their heads they knew I had chosen correctly. With this confirmation, from what I considered my family I agreed, but only if the general did also.
"Why"? asked the general. I replied, "You have experience, you have seen and survived battle and injury ( I purposely looked at his throat), you have risen in the ranks without ruffling too many feathers, you think before you act, you are well liked by the men, but most of all I would be honoured to have you protect my back so to speak". With what was suspiciously a tear in his eye he agreed.
The admiral then asked what needed to be done. Gaia said that the best would be for the general and I to come to the hive, but that if a chamber was set up with a stable environment with monitoring facilities that would be adequate. The admiral asked what would be needed if we were to go to the hive.
Gaia answered, "For your own safety and peace of mind, protection, to be decided by you. Also a medical team of doctor and nurse with supplies in case of emergencies.
Dr. Phind spoke up and volunteered as he was also a medical doctor, and he would be able to study while he was waiting. He had the perfect qualifications to fulfill two roles at once. Security came on the line to say they agreed if Dr. Phind was part of the party. My team stepped forward with Mule saying he doesn't go without us, we are his nurse. The admiral asked what defenses Gaia had.
Gaia replied she had the resources of five hives besides herself and her second. Five hives everyone gasped, the realisation of just how close annihilation was, sobered many a soul. Gaia went on to explain that the full extent of her tribe/hive she had kept from us so as not to appear threatening, the alliance would have been forged between us, before the knowledge of her forces been disclosed.
Dr Phind then asked Gaia how she knew so much about us. Gaia replied that in centuries past people had sought her and her ancestors out and had melded. "Others", asked Dr. Phind, "would one have been on Axion about two centuries past".
wow, this story is awesome!!! so, deep! THIS IS A GOOD STORY!!! A++++++++++++++ for it!! (sorry about excessiveness, necessary to show how much I like story hehe)
Thank you I appreciate the interest, here is some more, excessiveness is very much appreciated.
"Yes", said Gaia. "So it was not a story grandfather was telling but a real event". "Yes, and we apologise that we didn't know enough then to help your great-grandfather Dr. Kheq Oute. We only learnt our mistake from him. My own forbear in her arrogance was responsible for this disaster, so if this changes your mind I will understand".
Dr.Phind turned to the admiral and said, "Admiral we will loose a marvelous opportunity as well as mankinds only hope of survival if we allow this to pass". Dr. Phind then related the story his grandfather told, about an alien mimic that was a cross between a fade and a soldier that had been assimilated, which created a being that was both, with the abilities of both. I fell to my knees holding my head, and began to rock back and forth. Chou was the first to react, he rubbed against me and started to purr with the sound of an express train, he sensed the distress this image created.
Gaia was next asking what was the matter, my team meanwhile helped me to a chair and stood helplessly by my side. Maker related how for many years I had, what they thought, was a recurring nightmare about this mimic. I would dream events and awaken tossing and turning, drenched in sweat. Because we had never encounted them, we presumed they were a nightmare, and a release from battle tension. Now we knew.
Gaia asked the admirals permission to try and calm me. Before she could begin I rose and said to the admiral we had better do this now. I looked to the general for support, he immediately told the admiral that now would be ideal while the memory was fresh so that Gaia could help and learn from this.
While we had been talking Gaia had organised a team of gorges to make a bridge of defense chambers from the floor of her level to our level. She told the admiral they only had to place flat plates of flooring material on them to make a ramp for any wheeled equipment we needed. The admiral ordered the new comm chair to be relocated to Gaia's level and Learner to go with it. He, with the team were to be the core of our defence. Three more squads of the most veteran soldiers were armoured and equipped with the latest equipment to bolster our defence.
The new base was located at the very back of the spiral arm behind the five hive/tribes. All the soldiers were at first unnerved passing the massed hives and aliens who just stood or squatted as we passed. Chou had by this time been accepted by all, so when he went and came back with another skulk we were not surprised. It was some hours before people noticed that every person who came down had a personal skulk. Gaia apologise that it had been done so surreptitiuosly, but explained that she had done it this way to re-enforce the bond between us, without anyone panicking. Gaia also stated her tribe needed the bonding as much as we humans. Gaia also stated she was surprised that it had gone so well without any hitches or clashes. It amazed her that we blended so well together.
It was Dr. Phind who voiced the explanation that was accepted. He pointed out that man throughout history had taken animals of many varied shapes and sizes as companions, this was part of the same behaviour. When informed of this occurrence the admiral asked if everyone in the base could be so accompanied. Gaia agreed that the benefits would be beneficial. The admiral asked if this would strain Gaia. Gaia responded that she would be semilinked to me, Chou and all the other skulk, so would derive a greater sense of wellbeing and support.
It was Mule who offered the opinion, if everyone was in contact with their companion skulks as the melding took place more love and support would be available if things happened. This was agreed by all a great idea, so it was arranged.
The base was quickly set up and all equipment checked and calibrated. An identity collar was made for all the hives and creatures of Gaia's tribe, this protected them from friendly fire. In theory it worked but no-one was prepared to test. By now we had all become comfortable with our [friends].
Smaller versions of the club had been built, so the general and I prepared ourselves on our beds. Gaia began by sending us gregorian chants. I had earlier asked the general if he knew of this and to my surprise he stated he used the chanting to meditate. A common bond between us, and a solid point of reference.
We settled into the meld with an ease that dazzled us. Gaia responded that the general had, until his attack used 'hunches', his 'sixth sense' had since been diluted by the practical side of command. Gaia took us through a series of further exercises designed to deepen our meditative states. When she was satisfied, Gaia told the general to hold a light touch on my mind. She showed the general what was needed and had him practise. Satisfied that all was as it should be she asked me if I was ready. I replied, "Yes".
Gaia lead me back to my first memory of using my abilities. I was astonished at how young it started. Gaia mentally smiled. Without effort we plumbed my memories. Gaia then showed me pathways that I hadn't connected and asked if I wished to connect them. She warned me that by doing so I would become aware of external stimulus and that now came the danger.
"What danger", I asked. "The danger to rush is the downfall of most. If the stimulus is pleasant some push too hard and fast and so lose themselves, or worse damage the paths, the best way is to slowly but thoroughly explore each stimuli/path before changing. By doing so you gain a foundation to build on", Gaia replied. "Like a baby learns to crawl before trying to walk", I said. "A perfect analogy", said Gaia.
The first path I found looked to be a squiggly line of blue lightning. I commented on this, and Gaia said it is seen differently by each person. People can be shown the same method but then it stifles growth, each should find their own way. A nudge can be offered but ultimately everyone should choose for themselves. I gently reached out expecting an electric shock, to find a pleasant vibration, I felt the vibration start to increase in rate and asked Gaia if this was normal, to which she replied, "What is normal".
I allowed myself to slowly become one with the vibration and found that by doing so I could now see many more paths. The temptation to reach out and touch them all at once was great, just then the general said, "Slowly son", which restored my equilibrium. I explored the first path until I saw a ball of energy with lots of other paths extending away from it. I told Gaia this and she offered that it was maybe a branching of paths. "What do I do", I asked. "You have to decide for yourself, to get the most benefit", Gaia responded.
I went back to the beginning and stood for a time watching this path. It came to me that I should try and enter this squiggly lightning. I thought this and voila I was inside or more appropiately I was one with the blue lightning. I was the lightning. "Aah, you picked that one up quicker than I did", said Gaia. "Please explain if you can, what is happening",
I let the experience wash over me, and became the experience. "I am the lightning yet also a space waiting for more lightning, the lightning is or can be memories, or paths to memories". I said. "That is a good way of explaining yourself, Thinker", Gaia said. I felt comfortable with this so I went to the ball of energy and incorporated it into my being. This act sent me flying through my mind making connections at a speed that began to frighten me. Then the voice of the general settled me, "It is your mind Thinker why are you frightened", he asked.
I realised I was going along single paths that were already there, with this I was at once all the paths and above them looking at them, I was aware. I saw Gaia as a ball of golden light yet at the same time a series of golden filaments making up the ball, I also saw memories as pulses of energy running along those filaments.
I looked at myself and saw blue pulses running along my paths so I chose one at random and became the memory of a mimic dream. I was aware it was a memory and I felt Gaia join me to explore this, with the presence of Gaia I felt no dread and explored the memory from all angles until I knew all there was to know. I pulled away from the memory and turned to Gaia.
wow the suspense is killing me man! Can't wait to find out what happens next!!!! I love this story! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
"Did you get the picture of the man in black armour entering the hive Gaia", I asked. "Yes", she replied. I had shared the memory with the general who added it was the Delta Black squad led by Bollard. They were presumed dead after a mission to Core Prime where they disappeared over fifty years ago. They had joined the enemy, and became the mimics.
I had no knowledge of these, but the general opened his mind and allowed Gaia and myself to search his memories. I felt privileged then horrified as the extent of their participation unfolded. I quickly assimilated the knowledge, and then started to make associations beyond the known data of the general. The general asked Gaia to link us all with the admiral. The admiral was astounded by the revelations I was making and when asked to connect to the database of HQ he promptly complied. With our increased abilities the admiral had the database scroll at 200 times normal.
At it's ending I thanked the admiral and assured him I would give him my findings after I sifted through them. I asked Gaia to help me, she replied she could not, she didn't have my ability. I asked her to stay with me for support then, I knew there was something of dread in my knowledge. She assured me she was here as well as the general. Just then a deep male 'voice' offered support.
"You are Gaia's second, I welcome you, what do I call you"? I asked. "My name translates to First Male, no aahh, Alpha is the nearest in your tongue, I thank you for your welcome and bid you good hunting in return", said Alpha. "We must explore the memories of all of us, I know I have a deep seated fear of them, which can only come from knowledge, I suggest you and Gaia plumb my memories for this knowledge, I cannot do it myself, I have already suffered and lose control each time I do", Alpha said.
We agreed this had to be done. "Why haven't you checked before"? I asked Gaia, her reply gave me pause. "It is in a place I cannot go, you will have to bring me to the memory". I collected the group and entered Alpha's mind, we watched for a while noting that his mind was a vibrant red. For some reason I thought of hell. I felt Alpha's fear and soothed and smoothed the waves that crashed upon us. I slowly deepened our probe soothing as we went.
I was unprepared for the assault of madness, and would have succumbed except for the solid rock of stability that was the general. I had fled the assault until the general stopped me, he soothed my fears and reminded me that we were there to help, to learn and we had all the support we needed. I began again.
I went slower this time allowing the waves to reach me and countered them with the love and support from everyone. The madness was eased and broken by the vast waves of support and love. The memory was from a soldier who unknowingly had expanded his mind through fear and had made contact to Gaia's hive mother. The memories were so violent she had shut them into a cocoon to be sorted at a later time. The memories were passed to Gaia when the hive was about to be destroyed.
The double disaster had made Gaia unable to open the memories. We watched as a black armoured soldier made contact with a hive that had been tortured by Bollard. We watched and learnt that Bollard had perceived the ultimate soldier. A cross between an elite, aware soldier and a fade. I made the connection that Bollard was making his soldiers to gain control and put himself in charge. He was aware and looked down upon those without awareness as inferior.
The memory of the soldier was of torture by a fade/soldier who would change constantly from fade to human to further instill fear for the thrill. It was the fear amplified by repetition that had made it unbearable. We looked at it from every angle until it had no further hold on us. We then picked it dry of all clues. In the process I discovered that the fade had then evolved into a gorge from orders by Bollard.
It was disconcerting to realise that the gorge in stasis was a Bollard soldier. I made further leaps and realised that having been in stasis for so long the gorge had forgotten some of it's humanity. This was looking worse by the minute. I made the observation that to win in this battle we would have to merge my own team into fade/soldiers. To combat the experience the other had we would have to have veteran combat trained soldiers.
The attack would have to be made swiftly, with overwhelming numbers and without warning. Alpha made the unpleasant observation that I would be the only one able to counter the Bollard soldier due to increased awareness. Without the ability to outhink the creature all would be lost, and that Gaia and himself would be unable to counter him. They gave me all their knowledge and experience they possessed.
Alpha then said that I would have to be one of the first to merge into a fade, and I would have to learn to evolve into all the other types of Kharaa. This would be to know the abilities and weaknesses from first hand experience. I could only agree. The general took it upon himself to inform the admiral. We spent a little time being together but knew we had to begin the preparations.
We reluctantly returned to ourselves, a feeling of loss overcame me momentarily. I fell asleep almost immediately. I awoke to see the general smiling, he explained that he was happy to see me so at peace. He had waited to say goodbye to me. I took his hand and gave him an embrace, we knew that I might not survive. I asked him what alternate arrangements had been made. He just sadly smiled and left.
I called the team together and explained the deal to them, all nodded their acceptance. Learner asked how we would inform the rest of the troops. I said that I would tell them a squad at a time, then allow them time to make a decision. Learner said to tell them all at the one time it would be quicker and show them no favourtism was being shown. I agreed he was right.
When the troops were gathered I explained everything and told them to go away and think it through. Again they surprised me. It took twenty minutes for them to return and say they were with me. There was only one who abstained and she did so only because she was pregnant. I was proud of them all.
The pregnant soldier I asked to accompany the general making sure she understood that it was the protection of the child not punishment. As they were leaving she turned to me and said, "I never thought you were punishing me sir, you think too much of your troops to do that, I would like your permission to name my child after you sir", I nodded my permission unwilling to speak for fear my voice would betray me. The soldier saluted and left with a smile on her face.
It wasn't long before the admiral called and gave permission, saying that twenty more squads would join me. I queried the number to be informed that more equipment had arrived whilst I was melded. I thanked the admiral and signed off. I asked Gaia to begin the merging. It was Alpha who said that the troops would benefit from a mind melding. I could only agree. The troops had brought down the means to build enough clubs to house everyone.
I gave everyone the benefit of my experience and had them practise meditation for a day before we melded. The process went smooth as silk, and was enhanced by so many minds. We melded four more times, sharing memories and experience. We were ready for merging. I suggested that we meld for a fifth time whilst I merged first, so the troops could gain from my memories and would know what to expect. Gaia and Alpha agreed.
I walked toward Gaia with Chou by my side. It was then it dawned on me, "You knew we were going to merge Gaia, how"? I asked. Gaia opened her mind to me fully, I saw the memory she had purposely kept from me. It was the total memory of the first melding and merging. An old man and a hive on a world of ice, the feeling of mutual support, of survival was strong.

-Reebdoog-
The idea was agreed to by Dr.
The admiral asked everyone to discuss and put forward their views, most were either wary or against the idea, but the clincher for the
idea came from Dr.
(sorry about excessiveness, necessary to show how much I like story hehe)
