The controversial Gamespot review is pretty much dead-on. It's an interesting concept, with awesome art. But the gameplay is mediocre and the whole experience feels not-fully-baked, like the game was rushed to release.
What many don't realize is that this is an independent developer with scant resources. It's an excellent game for starting from scratch. I wish it was more my style of game because I wouldn't mind supporting this developing company.

I can't tell you how much the voice comm system in half-life pisses me right off. All the HLSS, the spam, the yelling, the annoyingness.....voicecomm is ruining online games as we know it.
I can live without it. Easily.
*EDIT* Oh yeah. And I'm gonna buy the game. That's what irritated me about that article a while back (on GameSpy, I think) discussing the implications of voicecom when it was first being implemented. The only bad thing they had to say about it was that you couldn't mute people, and that this was a crippling disadvantage. Despite the fact that you can mute people.

So my new plan is to evaluate games based on their quality and polish, and ignore who makes them.
I'll probably get this game, but after I get GTA: VC (so in 4 months). I tried playing it some, and it's a very appealing type of game... it doesn't require too much advanced thinking skills for most of the classes, and turns a good DM game into a good TFC game with buildings.
Team-based: 0/10 -Too "Deathmatch" like -No voicecomm -Chatbox is almost obsolete -It's a "rush-die-respawn-repeat" game
Long Playability: 3/10 +Ongoing stats!!!! (your character keeps a record of how many wins, loses, kills, and deaths you've had) -You die too much and too often -There is no real strategy involved (just rush and die tactics)
All in all, it was an okay game, but I'd rather play Natural Selection. Savage has major potential, but vast landscapes and rush tactics just aren't my thing. I prefer gritty looking indoor maps, with lots of hiding spots and teamwork. Savage has none of that. In fact, it's an outdoor, bright and smooth looking skirmish game. I think it would have worked better as a mod to another engine.
It's not worth the $50 at the store, but if you buy the download and cd-key for $40, then you might as well get it. The game is fun, but just nothing like NS. If you like teamwork, tight corners, awesome maps, cool models, and rockin' textures... then stick with NS. If you want a rambo-type game with large outdoor maps, cartoonish looking characters, and NPC animals that give you gold somehow... play Savage.
If they have a demo, DEFINITELY PLAY IT before buying it. I wish I had.

Duffman is correct - simply going up to someone and holding down your mouse (actually, clicking over and over) gets very old.
