Have you guys tried renaming one of the ns maps? (ie. ns_tanith -> co_tanith) The only issue I can see is that it might have a problem placing the hive depending on how Flayra did it.

Besides, 1 hive room and smaller overall size is essential to NS:C, and you won't find it in the regular maps.
Modifying existing maps (for which the source is available) to trim it down and make it meet the specs is a distict possibility. I think it's been done, actually.
Outside of having one hive and some unused entities, the mapping guidelines aren't too dissimilar. However, you're right about it probably not working. I just think it would be interesting to double the usage of the ns_ maps as co_ maps. Actually, it could be almost like three maps in one since the hive would spawn in a different location each time. No doubt Flayra would have to specially code this in to function, but it's a thought. (and probably really easy to code as some kind of server variable that uses ns_ maps in combat mode)

More screenies!! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Also, I look really forward to the ironman mode, it looks like it will be what hardcore was for Diablo II, adds a greater sense of teamwork and carefulness <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Here's a question: is the amount of health from leveling the same per level for all lifeforms, or is it different (i.e. percentage based or similar)? I ask because if it is the former the system will naturally favour skulks (not necessarily a bad thing) as it will have the largest impact on their survivability. The difference in strength produced by the latter option would make would either make onos uber or skulks suck in the late game.
I can tell you why this is happening: NS popularity is declining, and despite the fact NS is the best mod ever created for a FPS (I'd say the best FPS ever, period), its popularity continues to decline even as it becomes better and better...
The easiest solution is to make it more like Counterstrike/DoD/FA, to convince people who don't like playing the hardcore team style required to be successful at NS, and of course since Flayra would never make the entire game like that, he's decided to make a "mod of a mod" -- I understand, perfectly, I would be super **** too if I made something so great and it wasn't appreciated... however the division of community and the type of people who will join the community for this isn't something I am anticipating at all.
I still play NS regularly even a year after release, and I'm very sad to see the player population declining, but is this really what its come to? You're so bent on making the mod more popular that you are betraying everything the mod stood for in the first place?
Of course this is all hypothetical (I don't doubt its true, however) and it might sound a bit hypocritical coming from someone who has made his share of stupid maps that didn't promote the true NS gameplay dynamic, but still...

This might be seen as spam, but I must just post a reply to that post <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> I think you're way off. I dont *really* think Flayra created Combat to steal some CS/DoD players over so they can yell roxxor. But more rather because it would be easy to make and fun to play. To try something new and add variety. Flayra created a whole new game with NS, and (imo) only shares the engine restrictions with halflife <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I must admit, to begin with I was sceptical about NS:C. It seemed bad to me because I had that horrible thought in my mind that it might somehow become more popular than NS itself. I like NS, and I was quite worried about this.
Since then, tho, I have realised that NS:C will serve to increase the popularity of both NS games, meaning more funding obviously and in the end a greater NS all round.
Now I've seen these screenshots I am half looking forward to the game,; it looks like a very good bit of fun. Am I against NS:C? No. am I for it? No. I'm just going to watch intently to see what happens. I really hope that more people continue to enjoy NS, and that not everybody uses NS:C and only NS:C, which has been my main fear and reason for opposition up until recently.
That said, at least the map will be a lot simpler <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
This is going to be the greatest release. The best part of 2.1 is the fact that its not very different than 2.01, so we wont all be shocked when it comes out. NS:C is something I am warming up to.
Flay's been hiding out in a cave somewhere so there hasn't been a whole lot of pt-ing lately. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->, new screenies soon hopefully.
NS is not fun with a small number of players. Flayra noticed, and NS:C fixes it; that is indeed its main purpose. As the server fills, it will transition over to regular NS based on the number of players.
Don't be surprised if you see NS:C only servers, though. There will probably be a lot of them while NS:C is shiny and new. There is no reason to have standard NS only servers, since NS:C just builds up to it.

And I think NS is plenty fun with a small number of players(3v3+) as long as you're playing on a server where you know the players, and you can get them to agree not to rush to Onoses. Smaller games are more personal. On the other end of things, I think a more standard-sized Combat game would be plenty fun too. I don't know why some people are treating NS:C as something that just gives NS some more small-game compatibility...

I think that most people find small NS games to be dull. Servers tend to be hard to get into once they get 14 players, but trying to get people to join a server with just 2 peeps on is usually an exercise in futility.
Look right at the top of the <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=39260' target='_blank'>changelog</a> for details. It's a default HL thing but is on by default in NS 2.1.
