Why don't we start a "what is the best doom port out there"-fight? I vote for zDoom, cause it's the only port that still has the real "doom-feeling" in it, followed by Doom Legacy. Sure jDoom is sweet looking (though I really don't like the 3d models) but it has absolutely no feeling in it at all.
I can't play wolfenstein the way I once played it. It goes too fast! I walk like 300 miles per hour. When an enemy sees me, my screen turns red half a second later.
And yes, I remember doom being a memory hog. I used to play it on a 33 mhz with 16 MB of RAM (started with 4, but I added). It had 240 MB of hard drive space, so my entire doom directory was like 1/5th my hard drive space.
When quake came out, I had to run it with 320x240 resolution! I remember thinking that was the most advanced game ever built. lol Ah memories.
i seem to remember two graphics settings, "High" and "Low" one being 640x480 and the other 320x200 IIRC the pixel sizes correctly.
"High" was so darn sweet, yet for soem reason a few years later, giong back and trying to play anything in 640x480 is painful on my eyes! cant see any real distance.
One of my housemates can finish all of episode 1 of doom 1 in under 10 minutes. Last time he tried I think he shaved it down to a second or two below 9 minutes. If you can best this let me know
