I got me a nice little (it's growing ) Ultramarine Space Marine army and am about to start a Black Legion Chaos army. All my figs I got for at least 20% off thanks to the sales Hobby Workshop has just about every month. I wish I had a scanner so I could show pics cause I'm pretty proad of the paint jobs (even though one guy takes me about a day ^-^.

I'm just jesting but seriously, does it *have* to work? Its Sci-Fi, therefore the rules of physics we know don't really work then. Or something.

Sci-fi is actually Science Fiction (doh) -- It's experimenting with what science can (and cannot) do with us, our daily life, or someone else's life. It is a very misused term. Doing cool stuff in the future makes it fiction, not science fiction.

Example: StarWars, WarHammer 40k and Aliens is fiction. StarTrek and The Matrix is (somewhat) science fiction, and 2001 -- A Space Odyssey, Brave New World is science fiction.

Fiction does not have to be explained -- if it only has a certain "ok, fair enough" feeling to it, we're ok with it. Science Fiction is -explaining- the fiction, and "observing" the effects of it. There is a lot of philosophy and thinking involved in it.

So, any WH40k effect should not have to be explained any further than "It's advanced tech". It makes no sense to say "it makes no sense!" -- it is pure fiction. It's just something that some people find cool or aesthetic.

Hm, ok. This was a rant on the usage of the term "Sci-fi". End.

mmm, more stuff to add

@Necrosis congratz, you are a bitbasher ;P
another company youm ight wana look in to is Reaper Minis

everything is pewter (they look white b/c of the primer)
most of their stuff is much better looking then GWs stuff
and bitbashing with pewter works better from what I have heard ;P

as for smoke, congratz your not a geek, now go away

@kida

Though I don't blame you for not wanting to spend so much (I don't, I don't even buy magic cards, I simply borow friends).
It aint a Fad, mini gaming is here for good. RougeTrader events are stupidly popular.

Again, I look at these things often from the perspective of retailers and such b/c I am friends with a few and have helped set up a Gaming Convention at my college (sucked last year, gona be much better this one, and its OberCon, at Oberlin)

See I am a poor geek, thus I don't actualy buy into any of these games, but I play most of them simply from borowing my friends stuff (my House mate and his GF are demoers for Reaper Minis, and they get paind in merch ;P so I can play when ever ;P)

While I admit it is one of those things you don't tell your friends you do (unless they are the ones you play... ala me ), it isn't the geekiest thing i've heard of by far.

Any idea what LARP is? Do a google search.

Or an anime convention, I know someone who is going dressed as a female character. He is a 6 foot bloke.

Neither of the above would I be seen dead at. I'll stick to 40k thank you very much

*edit*and one of my other m8s has a federation star-trek uniform and he's been to a convention.... I need some new friends!*edit*

Take a read of most of the 2nd Edition rulebooks and everything and you will find a large amount of stuff on how everything works. THey just don't have anything like it in the newest edition.

For example the Codex: Imperialis (The book that came with the rulebook that gave you a taster of the whole armys) had a list of all the organs a space marine has, what they are and what they do. As well as the wargear book giving a detailed description of what the weaponary does and how it works.

Just a counter-rant don't mind me

Reaper minis roxxor your soxxor.

And rightly so.

I like the conversion, I like the quiet artistry involved. The gaming aspect bores me now - I've retired undefeated with my fav army.

I think we all need a little bit of creativity in our life, to keep that little spark burning.

Although I agree at some degree, these games are probably more productive than time wasted doing nothing.

I aspired once to collect some of of warhammer, but over time as I dreamed of huge armies and beautiful landscapes, the scope of reality hit me. Once I crossed the line, I would be what people now define: A TRUE GEEK. Not saying that posting here isnt geeky, but really, warhammer just perfects it. My friends poked fun at me and told me their thougtful points of view pertaining to this subject. They said that it wouldn't be worth spending 39 bucks Canadian for 9 pieces of plastic, and it is quite true. The crazy prices games workshop asks for their mediocre quality plastic assembles of Space Marines and what not is not worth it. The quality they put into those things does not justify the price, and I am serious. Not saying their pieces of dung, it is just way to much for smaller than pinky size plastic figures.

Instead I found something less expensive that had more application in the world, artistic drawing, with regular charcoals, pencils, and whatnot.

Now that I look back, I am truly thankful that I didn't spend some 250 dollars for a good base army, that in reality wouldn't benifit me in the long run.

As false as it may sound, warhammer is kind of a fad.

/puts on flamesuit.

Haha, look at those weeners spending 50 bucks on pieces of plastic.

And those weeners buying those "paintings." Just ink splattered on paper.

Haha, that moron's buying software. Just a bunch of ones and zeroes.

Look at that poor, naive fool buying food. It's just a bunch of vitamins surrounded by needless outside. I just eat pills and tofu for a living.

I know a couple kids at school who are into this stuff.

I've never seen them play or played it with them, but at the local LAN café I sometimes visit for CS tourneys and just to play CS/WC3/Games on a LAN, there are little WH40k tourneys. A bunch of other mini games too, but that's beside the point. I've watched guys play it a couple times and it's kind of interesting, but if it's really as expensive as you guys say, I don't think it's for me.

I'm content with watching, I guess.
