Everything I just spouted off I learnt from one lesson during some science class over 2 years ago and I was going purely from memory there. If "**** gap" isn't the real scientific term, but rather my teacher's idea of a rather unfunny joke, I then apoligise for calling the swear filter stupid...
EDIT: Oh yeah, and use the ideal proportions Sarisel provide as a guide, not gospel. What looks good in real life doesn't always look as good in a picture. (ie curves, long legs, and a decent pair are a good thing)

Hi everyone! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Sorry about not posting for a while, but I'm still in the mess of finding a suitable internet connection and this (and some other works I had/still have to attend) kept me away from the forums.
As for this model, all I can say is I'm nearly done with the UV coordinates mapping (just have the head, torso and and hands left).
I know you may wonder why it is taking me so long but hey! just think about the fact that I still got to *learn* how to do this stuff and then maybe you'll understand...
As it's the first time I'm unwrapping things, I just feel like I'll never ever play to battlechess anymore (or at least not before a good month <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)...
I hope I'll finish this last part very quickly... I was wondering why I had read here and there people saying that this part of a model creation was boring and that they were willing to let some other people do this stuff for them...
Oh my! Now I understand! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
BTW, is going through the "checker-material-for-unwrapping-your-stuff" technique the only way to get a cool UV set reedy to be texturized?
Oh, and the last modifications on the model are: - the legs are a little bit shorter (and the torso is a little bit longer too to get things well balanced). - modified a little bit the hands (they were a little bit too small, even for a lady) - the hips are slightly larger now but not that much though, as I took a good look at the pic I had as background to the viewport to build the model on; and it appeared that the hips are already large enough. In fact, if we take the armor off (particularly the upper part) then we would see it better. IT's the armor that make the hips look tighter than they really are IMHO.
And to respond to another older post: yes, the model itself is a generic marine woman, not the character of Natalja Seadjin herself. I should have put a little " (j/k)" at the end of this post...
Anyway, you are not bothering me in any manner, and I don't really know what I'm going to do with this model once achieved... Basically, it's a model I've started as an "exercise" in order to practice. Since I'm really new to modeling and everything that comes around (UV mapping, skinning etc.) it's a model that allows me to experiment.
I'm basically more a 2D artist-wannabe, but I wanted to try doing 3D models as well.
As I've stated above, it took me days and days to just understand how UVW coordinates and mapping works (let alone understanding what it is <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->). I've just finished today this part of the model because it was the first time I was doing this <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Now that it's done, I'm going to try to create skins for this model (and this will also be the first time I'll be doing a skin... well several skins here).
In fact, it's like people will see my progress on a step-by-step basis <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
I've got a clear idea of what I would like to do as my second model, but I would like to entirely finish this one first before going in another project.
So, then, I don't know how it's gonna look like once skinned and finished, I don't really think that it will be good enough to be a custom model or to be integrated to NS (my! I never had such intentions! these are my very first few steps in a 3D software, I just can't have those pretentions)... Actually, what I fear the most is the animation work, I totally have no idea of how it works! <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
But I hope I will gain enough experience from this -so that maybe i'll try to do a better looking one later that would have been made with such ambitions in mind <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Hoping you'll pardon me one day Jane...
best regards everyone!
JeeR
Edit: corrected some of my "b4d ingurishu mistakes" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Muh,it looks fine except her back looks a bit unarmored,but I think the skin will be able to fix that <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

If they're unchanged from the pics on page 4, you ought to work on your smoothing groups a little. Mostly what I see needing to be done is a rounding of the arms and legs underneath the armor; she's faceted right now. ^^
Hi Everyone! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
It's been a long time since I last posted and I wanted to apologize to anyone who was waiting for updates about this model: I was really busy preparing my departure since I'm going to move anytime soon from my current place for.. well another country <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
This <i>-plus my natural tendancy to lazyness-</i> delayed the time for achievement for it and well, I have to say that I'll have to delay it a little bit more...
I think I can say that the model is nearly finished (something like 75% I would say), but yet some textures are still missing, and I'm not done with the skinning process yet.
Anyway, here is a little pic in order for you people to see what it may look like once finished. You'll notice that I'm giving credit to Lancedres, who is helping me in the fan-fiction department <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Thanks a lot Lance! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
- I wanted to say that I've taken in account the advice telling that it would be cool to have the female marine model somewhat different from the male one. This explain that <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
- I now know that doing textures and doing artwork isn't as similar as I thought (well, I couldn't have known before trying <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->). Could you people who are used to doing texture could tell me more about how you are proceeding? Don't bother telling me that I should first buy myself a graphic tablet, my friends already told me about that thousand times <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> I thought that graphic tablets were too expensive but if it's less painful and time consuming than doing it with a mouse I guess that that's the next piece of item I'll buy in the next few days (or so I hope)...
- I don't know if I'm going to release this model for use as a marine player model, because now that I'm nearly done with this one, I can see that I've screwed up on various things and that it would be a shame to let things like that. The "faceted issue" as Coil pointed out in it's post is one of these. (And thanks to you Coil, I finally noticed it too, and it helped me understand a few things! thanks a lot! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->) So as I said to Jane, I thought that I would rather do an entirely new model, taking in account the various mistakes I've done with this first one, and try to achieve a better result.
Well, I had some more things to say but time is running out and I still have plenty of things to do tonight... I promise I'll update this topic ASAP with pics of the achieved model! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Ya, that does look nice. JeeR, if you finish her, I'd alert Flayra- he may wanna code a itty-bitty thing in and include it, or something. It'd be nice to have her in(you could alter it in the mp options or something...all you have to do is get a white and a black version of her.

Oh another thing that I was wondering about, what are you planing on doing with this? Is it going to be a custom model, or are you going to try to get it put into NS, or what? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I didn't thought this would make you angry Jane, so please excuse me <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
In fact, it's like people will see my progress on a step-by-step basis <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
JeeR
Edit: corrected some of my "b4d ingurishu mistakes" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Overall, I am so loving this model, JeeR is teh r0x0rz!!
Looks *very* nice. (:
You'll notice that I'm giving credit to Lancedres, who is helping me in the fan-fiction department <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Thanks a lot Lance! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
So here's the pic:

Some bit of information and request here too:
- I wanted to say that I've taken in account the advice telling that it would be cool to have the female marine model somewhat different from the male one.
This explain that <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Don't bother telling me that I should first buy myself a graphic tablet, my friends already told me about that thousand times <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I thought that graphic tablets were too expensive but if it's less painful and time consuming than doing it with a mouse I guess that that's the next piece of item I'll buy in the next few days (or so I hope)...
<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->)
So as I said to Jane, I thought that I would rather do an entirely new model, taking in account the various mistakes I've done with this first one, and try to achieve a better result.
Well, I had some more things to say but time is running out and I still have plenty of things to do tonight... I promise I'll update this topic ASAP with pics of the achieved model! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Bye!
JeeR
