The blood being bright red is realstic, as it is arterial blood that is very blood because it has lots of oxygen. Having given blood 5 times (soon to be six), what they used for fake blood could have been a little more syrupy, but otherwise the color and consistency matched.

I loved everything in the movie, except the "comatose" Uma scene. What the arsehole doctor was saying...ewww.
For it to get an NC-17 rating it would have needed a lot of sex and drug use, so nope that's not the reason. And if you <i>still </i> think it was done to tone down the violence why was every single other dismemberment in color?
And Smoke the coma scene is based on real events, there was a man that was convicted after he got a comatose woman pregnant, she gave birth to the child they did a DNA match and put him in jail. Sick but true.

And the way it kinda went off like a geiser (complete with the wooshing sound of a hose at full blast) made it so I didn't get queasy at all about the blood.
And although real blood might not be darker, it looks better IMHO onscreen when you have darker blood. I suppose it kinda fit with her bright yellow clothing though.
The only thing that I thought was gory at all was the anime scene, when she pulls the sword out of that dude and everything just goes spoooooolsh everywhere.

The "sloshing" sounds, and "gushes" of blood is a <i>style</i> people... just let it be, it was a fargen good movie, ive seen it twice already and loved it both times. Watch Akira or Vampire Hunter D and you'll get the picture. Also some classic Kung-Fu movies had the same type of blood/style going on, and since this was Terentinos tribute to Kung-Fu I think he hit the mark.

The gushing blood is a tribue to old-style Anime/Kung-fu.
Having watched my blood drain out of me 5 times, veinous blood is really dark, almost black, while arterial is bright red. It's also not too syrupy. Heck, they did a good job with it.

I just got out of the showing. It's not bad at all, but honestly, I would've expected better from Tarantino. Yes, it's a parody, and yes, it's a damn good one at that, but comparing it to the dark comedy of Pulp Fiction, it just doesn't cut it.

This was a prefect movie, and while I may dissaprove in theory about it being split into two movies, the ending of this "episode" couldn't have been more perfect. That one line... brilliant! Having that as a cliff hanger actually justified the entire "splitting" thing for me.
It was making fun of itself, and yet, at the same time, took itself seriously. Er... maybe that isn't clear. It's giving homage to all these old 70s kung-fu movies, and it's done in such a way as to make you at least chuckle from time to time, but at no moment does the movie ever figuratively "Wink to the audience"... it never descends into actual comedy. All the jokes are injokes and references... and then there's the action, which was cool regardless. My only complaint with the action was that the hordes of yakuza looked pathetic and worthless, and it can be argued that such was intentional.
And the soundtrack was amazing. The friend I went to see this movie with went to borders bookstore RIGHT AFTER WE GOT OUT in order to purchase... PURCHASE not download the mp3s... the soundtrack. I almost followed suit, and I may do so despite my possession of the internet and kazaa. Just as soon as I get some more money... college=being broke.
I love this music. It's 70s, and it's great. The opening theme was perfect, the whistling nurse was wonderful, the trumpet runs were actually funny... it was all great.
I walked out of the theater completely satisfied with what I just saw, thinking it was money well spent. There are people here at college who are seeing it multiple times... someone I know is up to 4 now. And if I could afford it, I'd be right there with them. I do know I'm buying the DVDs when they come out.
