The end of the world. Will it happen? When will it happen? How will it happen?
These are some of the many questions that arise about the end of the world. You might want to check out the two links I provided. The first one is a cynical look at the end of the world like it will never happen. The second link is the physicists' interpretation of the end of the world. There are many other views though. Christianity have described the end of the world as being a rapture or "harvesting" of souls. The moon will turn blood red, and the dead will rise again. The four horsemen of the apocolypse will come riding.

This thread is by all means religious in nature as well as scientific, so suggestions can be, but aren't limited to scientific facts. All opinions are welcome (so long as they pertain to the topic). Let the games begin. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well given we don't nuke each other, the sun will explode, then about 8 minitues later everything up to jupiter is gone. If your a jedi you may feel a slight "disturbence" in the force, other then that you'll be dead and on the way to the afterlife of your choice.

If all "past" is erased, then it will truly be the "end of the world."

I'm pretty sure humans will all be dead in 5,000,000,000 years or less... no chance to see the sun inflate and devour Earth! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
How would humans be able to live for that long? No species lasted (or could last) that long... humans will probably be no exception. Other life-forms will probably replace us...
And after that 1 with 200 zero's years later, probably the universe will collapse on itself, creating a microscopic chunk of matter, antimatter, energy, whatnot... everything that ever existed. Then, it'll expand faster than the speed of light again, in the Second Big Bang, and everything will start over again.
Maybe even the same way; the planets will develop like they are now, and Earth(2) would be formed, and Flayra(2) would invent NS(2) sometime <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Isnt it funny how so many people expected the world to end in 2000?? Because, ooo three zeros, yet, our counting system is man made, which has no significance to anything of cosmic proportion.

How the world is going now, we can safely assume our species will be extinct long before the universe ever ceases to exist.

Revelation is all symbolism, don't take it literaly.

Well your not to bright, if its a game, I would put god mode on myself. Then noclip to another planet. Back on topic. Before the Sun explodes we will most likely have a coloney on an other planet, but even if we survive the sun explodeing somehow, the Andromada galaxy is going to colide with ours. So were screwed no matter what...

Depends on the timescale the end of the world takes place on.

If it takes place instantly, then, well, thats it.

If it takes place over the course of a year, you'd probably see mass suicides along with looting and hoarding.

If it takes place over the course of 10 - 30 years, you might see the above initially, then people will become resigned to their fate and a general feeling of apathy will take place. A plan to escape might actually be tried, but will probably fail. You may also see a high upsurge of population.

If it takes place over the course of a century or more, most people wont care. International governments might band together to devise a plan of escape, or become evermore divided as wars ravage the planet before the end. Also, an upsurge of population would occur prior to the end.

Individualistically, I'd get nice and drunk if the end were coming in my liftime. Sit somewhere, nice and drunk, and watch the end arrive, so long as I was powerless to stop it.

If the end could be stopped, then I would devote as much as I could to stop it. Even if it meant forfieting my life.

Humanity might be a sad lot, but there is always hope that they will evolve into something better.

And just a point, many people have said that humans wont be around in 5 Billion years. The problem with that argument is that there has been no evidence of intelligent species before man. We are unique in the entire history of the earth in that matter, and as such we are presented with the faculties to recognise extinction when it rears it's head, and cling on to life tooth and nail.

I have confidence that given proper management of the human species, we can most certainly survive indefinitely.

    Thats a silly misconception.

The andromeda galaxy will collide with ours, but it's not the same as two solid objects smacking into each other.

Scientists have by observation ascertained that Andromeda has eaten a couple of other galaxies before ours, and it's still there.

So, Milky Way colliding with Andromeda != Destruction

If the end was coming I would play it like a game.
Relocate to N Corridor and block off everything with comm chairs until I can no longer keep it up.

I'd be very interested to hear which Biblical scholar gave you that impression? Nothing in the way revelation is written suggests that it might be pure symbolism. I'm sure that some of the events described will take place outside of this plane of being, and that some of the events described are the attempts of a man 1000's of years ago attempting to describe what he was being shown in his own language. For example, if you were shown a vision of armaggedon back in 70AD, what would you describe a helicopter as?

But nothing suggests that any of revelation isnt actually going to take place.

Revelation was written in code, not symbols

btw, The universe will continue expanding forever. It is of critical mass. Is expansion will slow down but will never stop. There will be no such thing as the big crunch
  • spidermonkeyspidermonkey @ Join Date: 2003-09-13 Member: 20810Members
I think the fundamentalist view is one that should not be employed when interpreting the book of revelations. If it is taken as code for future events one misses the overtones of myth and symbolism.

I believe the symbolic message we get from the text is that we cause our own downfall. The metaphor is that god will unleash his wrath on the world for their ignorance. Yet god is only a metaphor for ourselves, and our ignorance will lead to the end of the world.

err, yes we're screwed. Milky Way has no chance to survive, make your time.

besides, if the Milky Way, as a whole, did survive the encounter, that doesnt garantee the safety of our solar system and/or planet.

I thought this "collision" was to take place in our time? Supposedly only a couple stars might collide thats about it...

Only if "our time" is 200,000,000 years from now <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Can you imagine the view right before it hits tho, wow it would be jaw droping, I can't even imagine it, wouldn't be such a bad way to end it all. As for Revaltions to take it literaly takes a huge amount of faith, which I lack, I'm just saying if you take the Bible as symbolism you can understand it much better, trust me I'm the product of 11 years catholic schooling, and nothing helps you get a good view on god like haveing him shoved down your throat every day <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I hate to be cynical, folks, but we aren't going to last 200 billion years.

Mankind will wipe itself out long before then. For all intents and purposes, you might as well assume the universe and earth will never end.
The earth will be inhabitable at this rate in about 100 years. Pollution, wars, global warming will all add up. The end of mankind will be in 100 short years. I'm just glad I won't be around to see it.

Ever hear of adaptation? Its why the lions don't eat us any more. We will adapt to live, we can go under ground, we can go to a new planet. We could have a settlement on Mars now I really think so, quit sending robots lets get a man up there. Besides we are makeing huge break throughs in medicine, look how quickly we put down SAR's would have been a bigger problem years ago. I doubt the world well go into nuclear war in the next 100 years. The ozone layer is a problem, if we turn away from fossil fules quickly enough we might be able to stop anything serious from happeing, but that part dosn't look so good.

The world will definatly come to an end. I am not sure if those two scientists predictions are correct, but sooner or later, the world will end.

Also, they only consider the world to end when "the sun dies". However, one must also take into consideration other possibilities. Say a huge meteor hit Earth, and when I mean by huge, I mean something like the size of Texas. One small meteor can cause a huge destruction, taking for example an incident which occured in Siberia, during the Cold War. A small meteor hit Siberia, and the destruction was the same as of Hiroshima and Nagaski. And the small meteor was about the size of a large tree.

There are also other posibilities, such as the explosion of a neutron star (not sure if it is exactly this, but is has something to do with neutrons or neutrinos). This explosion could occur further away than Pluto, and would still cause the Earth to become a huge microwave. Some say that Earth has been lucky.

Now, if the world will end is only a matter of probability. How probable that this things will happen? This is the true time that the Earth will end.

the world, or at least the human race, will be destroyed by humans long before that happens..

well, uhhh, not to destroy my point too much...

but yeah, the human race will kill itself sooner or later.

    The Great White Handkerchief?

((or something, dunno what it is in English))

If we actually manage to make it to the point where the sun will blow up, we won't probably be <i>humans</i> anymore, since in some odd billion years evolution is bound to kick in at some stage. That's assuming we get bloody lucky and nothing hits us like the whatsitsname meteor that killed the dinosaurs or the Andromeda won't collide with the Milky Way or anything like that.

I think machines will kill us all within the next 50 years. Computer power doubles every couple of years, not because there is some formula that says that's hhow it is allways going to be, but because the human brain is limited in how fast it can improve upon the computers. Now if that trend continues where computers speed doubles every 2 years, then by about 2030 mankind will have created omputers as powerfull as the human brain. Now assuming those computers are used to create other computers in 2 more years there will be computers twice as powerfull as the human brain. Then in 1 year twice as powerfull as that and 6 months twice as powerfull, then 3 months and so on.
  • HawkeyeHawkeye Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1855Members
Nah, there have been too many sci-fi movies for us to let that happen.

The way the world will end will be a way we least expect.
