From what I can tell from a lifetime of Zombie movies (hell, my forum Avatar is from a zombie movie), your go-to melee weapon should be something which can take out a Zombie's brain. Every zombie you ever see has a weak point of the old greymatter, and one it gets punctured, the puppet strings get cut. So my advice is something which can get through a skull with ease, and more importantly, comes right back out fast for ready use with the next undead bastich:

again, seriously depends on your weapon.
the M4A1 and M16A2 are suitable medium-to-long range weapons, but will do in a pinch for close-range (the M4, being the more maneuverable weapon, will obviously do better in close).
also... more medium-to-long range weapons like the Steyr AUG or the HK G-36 are superb for both purposes, featuring fire selection and fantastic accuracy for those distance shots, but good full-auto fire rates at 650 and 750 rds/min respectively.

why on earth do you want two 0_0..
at least a wakizashi if you NEED the japanese weapon, but i'd SO rather have a good aluminum stickball bat than be weighed down by two overly long swords.
Barricades could be made by humans who later die and come back as zombies, so don't rely on them as signs of human habitation.
Katanas eventually blunt. Machetes will too, but have enough weight to keep going as a cleaving or bludgeoning weapon.
Shotgun ammo is fairly widely available, handguns less so.
Bows of any sort can be used with makeshift ammo. It won't be perfect but it should knock over anything you hit.
Flamethrowers could be fatal should the undead rely on smell. Lets face it, who'll miss a bbq in the midst of a zombie attack? It'll draw their numbers, and also makes you a bit bulkier and thus less likely to wriggle/run/climb your way out of situations.
Besides, you don't want to KILL the zombies, just PROTECT YOURSELF. The golden rule of Resident Evil. As long as you can get past, it makes no difference if its dead. One dead zombie won't be missed in your average city, but the shells/bullets you put into it most certainly WILL be missed.
Katanas hahahahaha I'd put a cap in your **** if I ever saw you with one of those, zombie or not.
Okay first, I don't care how many stupid japanese tattoos you have, I don't care how many Bruce Lee movies you've seen, or how much you swing one around in your yard, almost none of you (almost as in: none of you) would know how to wield it properly and not get it stuck in a zombie, in a wall, break the blade, or lop off your own leg. That is assuming you've been swining it around and haven't managed to drop it yet.
Second, if a zombie is getting that close to me, I'm not going to think about how cool I'll look because I've seen Kill Bill 40 times, when zombies are closing in, there's only one solution left.

I definatly second that, my M3 is effective to 150m (well I cant hit jack past 100 I dont have a rifled choketube, supposedly it makes my Benelli an assualt weapon if I have a rifled choke in CA, go figure)
Actually, I do know how to weild a katana, go to practice at least once a week (used to be twice a week, but then school started) and regularly spar. I've been to competitions, and am only unranked because the testing days are always on days I can't possibly make it... but I'm fairly certian I'm either a sankyu or nikyu (2 or 3 below dan, which is the equivelent of blackbelt)
Making general statements tends to not be a good idea. You'll be proven wrong far too often, because with blanket statements, it only takes a single counter example to prove you wrong.
On the subject of using two swords at once... well, you probably don't want two katanas. You'd want a katana and a wakisashi, which is a short sword. And you'll want more training than I have, because they aren't easy to weild, and even experts weilding them can be beaten by experts with a single blade, since nitou (two blade style) has a lot of gaps and weaknesses in them.
For zombie combat, you have absolutly no need for two swords. The purpose of the second sword isn't so you can face multiple opponents, it's so you can use one blade to knock the other guy's weapon away, and then the other to kill. Zombies aren't going to be fencing you any time soon.
And with two swords, you get tired twice as fast. And I don't care if you're a body builder or not, it's not that swords are heavy, it's the prolonged use of them.

Although technically not real and technically not even from a zombie game, I would want the shotgun I had at the end of parasite eve. In defense of teh not a zombie game through the mitochandria mutated animals were essentially the same thing.
2- Evil zombies raised from the dead by arcane magics that only the lord of the underworld can possess: Many, many explosives if they'll stay disintegrated in 10000 peices. Otherwise, sit next to the pope or your local priest and start praying and spraying lead.
3- Mind Controled humans: their bodies are under someone, or something, else's control but they MIGHT be holding the weapons they were killed with; making that much more of a pain in the a** to kill, simply because they could shoot back. You also just might have to shoot a friend or familly member. Conventional weapons and a strong stomach.
and keep trying to make types of zombies... lets see we have: Biological science gone wrong, satan-raised corpses of the true undead, and mind controled humans. can we extrapolate on this, at all, or have i covered all the bases?
[edit] just for clarification; by having 2 katanas i meant to hold onto one and use it, while keeping the other strapped to your back. this way if the one you're holding gets dull, you can take out your second and keep swinging a fresh and sharp blade. a shotgun at close range is HIGHLY effective, i didn't say you HAD to use it like in the games where it only goes 5 ft and then is useless. take them out at whatever range you feel right and within reason to the weapon. [/edit]
I would like to respond to the guy complaining about wanting to use a katana... melee weapons are for when you run out of ammo. Because even though this is a world with zombies, it's not my luck to be in a world with idkfa. There are bazillions of zombies, and only so much ammo you can carry.
And I suppose having a 2nd katana for when the first one dulls is reasonable. But of course, the first one only gets pulled out when my shotgun runs out of lead. No automatic weapon for me... need something that delivers maximum stopping power for each round loaded.
I was under the impression that the wakizashi was for if your katana gets lost\disarmed\corroded\rendered otherwise unusable. Well, the reason why samurai carried one, at least (other than tradition).

And I know for certain that my sensei teaches nitou to students after a while... probably when they reach 1st dan or iikyu. It's a valid style, and works, but it's only for very specific situations. I wouldn't expect anyone to use nitou on a battlefield, since it helps to have two hands to cleave completely through bone (and armor, but really, armor is only to protect you from glancing blows. It won't stop a sword aimed right) but when un armored, and facing another samurai in the street? Maybe nitou would be good then. But only sometimes, because, as I said, it leaves you open to certain kinds of attacks even as it enables you to more easily break through your opponent's guard.
Keep dreaming, boys. You'd all be long dead before you could ever lay your hands on anything more than a baseball bat or a shovel. Or, in this guy's case, a few plastic BB-slingers:

Notice a certain trend? Blades suffice for personal defense, not to mention if you carry a Halberd & B@2tard/Great Sword, the Halberd can just be swung in a wide circle to lop off the head's/limbs while the sword can hold you till you can fall back (especially the greatsword, as it is reallllly sharp & heavy).

-factory-customizable, too. you can get one made anywhere from 700 to 850 rds/min i believe.

if you have a shotgun that's any good, you can take them down at medium range as well. not every shotgun adheres to the gaming stereotype of spraying five-yard cone at 3 feet.

again, seriously depends on your weapon.
the M4A1 and M16A2 are suitable medium-to-long range weapons, but will do in a pinch for close-range (the M4, being the more maneuverable weapon, will obviously do better in close).
also... more medium-to-long range weapons like the Steyr AUG or the HK G-36 are superb for both purposes, featuring fire selection and fantastic accuracy for those distance shots, but good full-auto fire rates at 650 and 750 rds/min respectively.

why on earth do you want two 0_0..
at least a wakizashi if you NEED the japanese weapon, but i'd SO rather have a good aluminum stickball bat than be weighed down by two overly long swords.
Second, if a zombie is getting that close to me, I'm not going to think about how cool I'll look because I've seen Kill Bill 40 times, when zombies are closing in, there's only one solution left.

chill.
katanas aren't that hard to use, man. talk about pulling info AND statistics out your butt.
if you know how to swing it with the bladed side into the swing, then by all means go forth and kick azz. i know a lot of you here are weirdos with real katanas next to your kenshin shrine, so kudos to you for having some skills.
me, i'll take my aforementioned aluminum stickball bat.

How bout a hydrochloric acid/lime solution that can be fired from a pressurised non corrosive hose? MmmMMm melting zombies.

I definatly second that, my M3 is effective to 150m (well I cant hit jack past 100 I dont have a rifled choketube, supposedly it makes my Benelli an assualt weapon if I have a rifled choke in CA, go figure)
And I don't care if you're a body builder or not, it's not that swords are heavy, it's the prolonged use of them.
on account of GTA3 being the next al-qaeda training weapon, at least in the eyes of idiot parents.
but man... you're a lucky fookar, you know that? enjoy that piece.. and keep it safe, so i can't find it and make out with it.

or an air born agent, or the worst kind of zombies. Real undead zombies. Satan ect. Thoses guys will **** you up, and they usually dont die as easly as normal zombies(see infected persons).

1- Biological science gone wrong: Conventional weapons
[/edit]
And I suppose having a 2nd katana for when the first one dulls is reasonable. But of course, the first one only gets pulled out when my shotgun runs out of lead. No automatic weapon for me... need something that delivers maximum stopping power for each round loaded.

you forgot "night of the living dead" zombies. they're not the spawn of satan, they're not ultrahumans broken out of the lab, and they're not mind-controlled.
they're just stupid, and slow, and probably fun to shoot.
hell, bust out your katana. get your nerd on XD
Don't know about the samurai, but I know that at a competition, I could be facing someone with a wakizashi in one hand and a shinai in the other, and I'm expected to fight this person with just my shinai.

No fancy asian blades, good ol' fashioned medieval weapons.
