When I was 13, my first foray into multiplayer gaming led me to GTA1 deathmatch over a null-modem cable, and TA. I started with my first name, then moved on to FR34K. Yes, I was very young.
Then, after a few moths, we discovered the online game Air Attack. The squadron name was Angelz (a z was cool back in the days <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> ), and we decided to be ironic and name ourselves after the four horseman. I was given Famine by my mates because, well, I was the thin pale one.
I changed it to FaminE for a few moths during TFC days, and shortened it to Fam sometime during my CS clan days. Very boring story yes, but I am proud of it. It may not be the most original or inspiration name ever, but its like an old blanket that I refuse to throw away. I have a few other (well, 2) aliases for when I go undercover or need to get away, but those are secretly secret.
When I first discovered MP games for real, meaning not a null modem cable to another computer playing Retaliator, I actually sat down and tried to think of a decent nick. I was reading a Discworld book at the time (And still do) and one of the characters was an "anthropomorphic personification", Death. He had a scythe and scythe rolls off the tongue and keyboard easily so I chose that.
And to those who say that it isn't an original nick, I say "Bah".
<a href="http://www.nceas.ucsb.edu/~alroy/lefa/Brewster.html" target="_blank">Brewster</a> Although technically it comes from Brewster's Linnet, which was a hybrid finch that he first collected from my hometown, that's way too long to use, so I shortened it up.
Umbrella Master = In TFC I was playing "Hunted" and was the prez. I killed 7 snipers in a row with my umbrella, therefore I had considered it mastered. If you ever see me with an umbrella in my hands... beware.. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
These are in order that i can remember using them:
DaMan - Yes i know i know, crapola =D ...started using this nick way back within the first week of getting Quake2
After an ever increasing poor gaming status for the above alias i decided to find another one..it being DarkEspionage (which stuck for quite a while, least until i started joining Online MUDs and MUCKs and so forth)
Then by the time i was coming to my end-of-playing Quake 2 I was sick and tired of DE so I simply sat idly by on the palyter setup screen until something popped into my head. 'Dramavian' being the result (how and why..i dont know...I just did *shrugs* any help would be nice on finding out wher ei mgihtve gotten it from =p)
Its stuck ever since....all I know aobut it (and ive recently just found out) is that its shortneed version 'Drammy' is some kind of award given out in America (..or something like that...google says so at least)

Lol
oh well, I have always used the same nick (or slight varients)
the origin of it however comes from my first (and only) MMORPG Sierras The Realm
I came up with it b/c I was looking for a name that wasn't to hard, was original, and that I like the name of Well I was also reading DragonLance at the time and I happen to like the Char Tanis Half elven so I started working on varients of that (I just sorta sounded out a name that I like)
as for varients: Than Thael Thragnar Tiersiel
and yes, so far as I know NO one else has ever copied this name thus if you see any of those names it is ALWAYS mee
i have pretty much been a variant of the squirrel for some timew
squirrelman BTS_Squirrel ... and ah.. squirrelboy? i dunno, i pretty much just stuck with that one.
interesting story behind it.
one day while at the local community pool, a friend and I thought it would just be totally sweet to feed a squirrel some cheese. (we were 8 years old) so i dared him to do it. and he double dog dared me to. well i mean... what was I supposed to do? yknow? you cant turn down a double dare. much less a double dog dare. turn one of those down, and your like... cast out of society for life.. or something.
anyhoo, i tried to feed this one squirrel some cheese, and it ran up and bit me. like.. totally bit me in the finger. so my mom freaks out when she sees blood coming out of my hand, we go to the er and i got a rabies shot. then like... my dad started calling me squirrelbait. which stuck for a while. but actually, squirrelbait might just be a cooler name than squirrelman. ok. from now on, my nickames will be squirrelbait, and BTS_squirrel. there ya go.
<!--QuoteBegin--Scythe+Sep. 27 2002,21:49--></span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td><b>Quote</b> (Scythe @ Sep. 27 2002,21:49)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"><!--QuoteEBegin-->And to those who say that it isn't an original nick, I say "Bah".
My first gaming, and long lasting, nickname was DieHard (my Diablo1 Rogue). It carried over to tribes for a while too.
Occasionally used TheUnderlord as a play off of my best bud during Quake days (his name being TheOverlord).
Onar is a name I use for RPGs for some odd reason. A name I came up with a long time ago that I just seem to like.
SuperMunchkin comes from Steve Jackson's game Munchkin. I don't actually consider myself an uber munchkin or anything. If you dont know what it is- I recomend you look up his stuff <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
Oh, god, this brings back memories. When I first got the internet (back in '99), I ate, drank and slept Diablo 1 online. My warrior went by the name of Tahngarth (any one who plays Magic: The Gathering or reads the books will know this one), just cos it sounded hard and warriorish. Then came Starcraft, and I started eating drinking that, and Diablo was left behind. So time for a new name. I used the first thing that came into my head, which was Ahora. Only later did I find out that it was spanish for 'now' (I did spanish at secondary so it came from there I guess) so was plagued by people asking if I was spanish.
Once my friend got his small and slightly crappy LAN working, we started playing FPS, so I needed a name for that (this being around 2000-2001). I wanted a name that already existed, so thought of a cool, honourable sounding one, and thought of the young Praetor from Brood War (Artanis) but I got his name mixed up with the Judicator Aldaris, and its stuck every since. I've only met one other person with that name, while beating him at JK 2 <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

Because I'm lazy heres some hot cut n paste action from an (as yet unposted) interview I did with HL Italia:
<b>Black Dog</b>: do you like Role-Playing Games? Your nick is the same name of the level of energy in RPG’s figures...
<b>Manah</b>: Yeah, I play some RPG games, though not many new ones ... I prefer classic SNES games like Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Secret of Mana and of course, the awesome Zelda. That isn’t where I got my nick from though ... it’s a combination of several things. I like the idea and original meaning of the word ‘mana’, however ‘manah’ is also part of the name of someone I’m obsessively infatuated with and it has relevance in Persian mythology and the religion of Zoroastrianism. I’m not religious at all, I just find it interesting. So it’s a little of all three and me just trying to be pointlessly esoteric, much more so than my earlier nicks (such as RAWBEEFSKiN).
I've been through [SM]Akutenshi (Evil Angel) [BHG]Hellfyre [TP]Paladyn (This is where I started my 'i' to 'y' craze. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
HF|KIR|SpyderMonkey --- Yeah, my friend is deathly afraid of spider monkeys... and I used to make fun of her, sooo.. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
If I had to change again, I'd probably go back to Akutenshi. Something about that I still love.

lol, talk about digging up a dead topic.... oh well:
Pen*s McSquirt - I didn't chose this name. The first HL game I played as at my friends house (it was TFC, Firearms or CS. can't remember) on a LAN. He used that name, and me, in my youthful innocence, didn't know how to change it.
<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->? - That isn't a name, i honestly can't remember what i used after that name, once i started making up my own.
TheStickman - I suck at drawing. I really, really can't draw. I can just about draw stickmen, and i can't do that very well, so my Stickmen Drawings became a much used joke. So i thought "hey, pretty good name". And, not as many people use it as you'd think, i've only ever ran into ONE other Stickman
Stickman - Figure it out <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
X_Stickman - I was playing on a PCZ CS server, and there was a person called X_ on there. All of the non-regs thought X_ was a clan, and asked him if they could join. Me and him decided to play along, and pretty soon everyone on the server had an X_ in front of their names.
Soundwave - Yeah, Transformers. used it for a while, but then went back to X_Stickman
Starscream - same as above
Backdoor Santa - When me and my mate were pratting around on a CS server
Surrender Monkey - Same As Above
TheSh*tman - When i wasn't at my best <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
And that's all i can think of at the mo <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
**EDIT** I can't believe P3nis is edited. not rude
<b>::esuna::</b> is taken from an item in Final Fantasy. Plain and simple. And it's also the name of one of my musical projects.
Now heading back in time:
Initally i was called <b>Rotting_Carcass</b>. This is mainly because i was 14 and thought it was "cool". I still to this day (6 years on) occasionally get called "Rott".
Then i changed it to <b>Annihilation-Incarnate</b>. This is a lyric from a song by Bal-Sagoth. Again, i thought it sounded cool.
And finally, the one i use pretty much everywhere else on the net, <b>Dies-Irae</b>. This is (ignoring the latin translation and all other instances of its usage) taken from the album called Dies Irae by Devil Doll. A piece of music that has changed my life and i utterly adore to this day.
Now somewhere in that brief timeline i used the name <b>GiB</b> (which is actually my RL nickname of about 8-9 years now). This nick was mainly used around the Quake 1 and 2 modding scenes. In Quake 1 i did a few very sub-standard, poor mods, but actually made it onto PC Zone's coverdisc once or twice. In the Quake 2 scene i made 2 player models (the Sheep and the UFO) which (for the former) i got a rather good reception from. And i've actually had, pretty recently when talking to someone in a club, someone giving me praise STILL for what was a pretty crappy model <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Back in my TFC days I used to go by Fah-Q, because I thought it sounded funny.
Used to play CS as Cracka-Barrel, because I hated going to that restaurant so much, the lines were hella long. I figured, since I'm a Cracka, it fits, heehee. Those are pretty much the only names I've used as aliases.

Going back from now...
<b>Shockwave</b> - He's always been my favourite Transformer, ever since being a kid, along with Blitzwing, which I'll occasionally use for clan impersonation purposes....
<b>MushBooM</b> - My usual Diablo II name, which started in Diablo I. It was also my tag for the Doom LAN days.
<b>Evil Elmo</b> - One I picked up somewhere, used, laughed with, discarded.
<b>MAELSTR0M</b> - A Quake & Doom II username, predominantly because I met someone else using my Elmo tag.
well.... it all started when i was a wee kiddie on a 56k modem... and i had just finished watching Rocky 5 and i went online and found this strange place called hotmail... so i signed up...
tommygunn*Stallone's enemy in rocky5 & my first name*69*pretty obvious..sexual position*uk*where i come from*
Tommygunn69uk that was me... i still use that email to this day... but the nick's around it have chnaged many times...
my longest was RoMeO i was RoMeO for around 3 years and i carried it out to the fullest <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
and here the story ends <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Woah, some people really have had a lot of names <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
I've been... uh... Ed Shot. And when HL arrived the transition just seemed perfectly natural...
*hides in closet when he realises how small the backstory is*
My original name was 'Dragonrider'. This was like, 7th grade (and if you look at my name in NS games, you'll see I've returned to it). This was back in the day of BBS's. Any of you remember the game LORD? (Legend of the Red Dragon)? The object of the game was to defeat the Red Dragon. So, I figured, I needed a name to do with dragons. But then you think about all the stories about people who slay dragons, and truly they are a dime a dozen. Slaying a dragon is easy, apparently. A true feat, then, would be to not slay a dragon, but to subdue it to the point where it'd let you ride it. The honor in that was an idea I really liked. And thus, 'Dragonrider' was born.
And for a long time, Dragonrider (or a misspelling thereof) was my AIM name.
Then came my MUD days. I used the name Dragonrider for a mage, which didn't make any sense at all. Plus, the name 'Dragonrider' didn't seem to make sense as a given name -- which was what the names on that mud were supposed to symbolize. It didn't fit in the environment. Plus, at that time I was made aware of a certain author named Anne McCaffrey. So I sought out to come up with a new name. First was Avitram -- I wanted an angelic knight character, and 'Bertram' was one of King Arthur's older knights -- 'Avi' is greek for air, and so Avitram made sense. I gave him the last name 'Silverwing'
Later for another knight character I came up with 'Lothian', a modification of 'Lothar' from WC2. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Didn't stick with it too long, though.
Finally, for a final attempt at a original name, I came up with 'Rhuadin' from rolling sounds over my tongue. Thought it was pretty original. (Never've found anyone with the name since, it even was untaken on hotmail, yahoo, and AIM <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> ). However, after a bit of thinking I realize I had a bit of influence from RJ's WoT series -- the prefix 'Rhu' seems pretty common amongst the characters and the locales involved.
At some point I also decided I needed a new AIM name. Telling people (especially girls) that my screen name was an unpronouncable, bastardized respelling of 'Dragonrider' got people to just not bother to get to know me. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I guess not everyone in the world is a fantasy geek. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
So I chose a new name: Pensive Penguin, because I'm pensive and I like penguins, as well as alliteration. Now everyone I meet loves my AIM name (I even met my last girlfriend because of it -- she liked my AIM name so much she decided she wanted to get to know me better -- and the rest is history.)
I've used Mullet for like 4 years now <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> . But, when I was a youngin' I use to have names like PsychoMantis, and all those stupid names that I thought were sooooo cool. I was pretty well known as Trooper in a Quake2 mod called DDay. woot

anyhoo, i tried to feed this one squirrel some cheese, and it ran up and bit me. like.. totally bit me in the finger. so my mom freaks out when she sees blood coming out of my hand, we go to the er and i got a rabies shot. then like... my dad started calling me squirrelbait. which stuck for a while. but actually, squirrelbait might just be a cooler name than squirrelman. ok. from now on, my nickames will be squirrelbait, and BTS_squirrel. there ya go.

Dogbert!!
I've been through [SM]Akutenshi (Evil Angel)
[BHG]Hellfyre
[TP]Paladyn (This is where I started my 'i' to 'y' craze. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
HF|KIR|SpyderMonkey --- Yeah, my friend is deathly afraid of spider monkeys... and I used to make fun of her, sooo.. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
If I had to change again, I'd probably go back to Akutenshi. Something about that I still love.
TheInfragableKrunk-cartoons...i thought of the big oaf as comical and reminded me of myself as a kid.
Pen*s McSquirt - I didn't chose this name. The first HL game I played as at my friends house (it was TFC, Firearms or CS. can't remember) on a LAN. He used that name, and me, in my youthful innocence, didn't know how to change it.
<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->? - That isn't a name, i honestly can't remember what i used after that name, once i started making up my own.
Stickman - Figure it out <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
TheSh*tman - When i wasn't at my best <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
And that's all i can think of at the mo <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
**EDIT**
I can't believe P3nis is edited. not rude
Anyway, enough of my life story <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

yeah. i did something good. once. i think. Oh no wait, that was my dad. Sh*t, i haven't done anything. lol

And thus, my gaming names since around '96.
and, where is Maelstrom from? I know it, but i can't place the name, and it'll bug me now

So that's my story. Hope you enjoyed it
Rhuadin
