    but what the hey... how about a sword.

    You cant have life withought light or in the very least some sort of heat.
    Swords are forged from molten metal. ==light and heat.
    Swords being the traditional call to arms, a symbol even today on numerous coats of arms.
    Not too many sword makers/master armourors around today.
    Lots of well known sword types
    Swords can be black lol. A and Once again a symbol to power.

    Yes. There's much about Linkin Park that's wrong. A. Their vocalist sounds like he's raping my ear.
    B. They have at best, mediocre and unimaginative riffs and "solos"
    C. Their lyrics are horrible and full of teen angst.

    Make it coal/carbon.

    Carbon is the base of all life on this planet, coal is a fuel that powered the forges of many armies including but not exclusively the Roman Empire, coal exports were also a major source of profit for the British Empire back in the day, and diamonds are made of carbon if there was any mention of beauty in the riddle.
