They're too restrictive and enforced with an iron fist. People get sigs removed for being 1kb over the limit, a few pixels too high. A bit of leniency would be nice at least.

Saying smaller sigs are better when your own is running close to the maximum allowance is pretty hipocritical, neh?
But anyway, take for example Jragon with his smiley rave sig. 100x100px@4.82kb. Smaller in both filesize and total pixel space than most people's sigs. But it'll probably still be removed.
These days, the most common screen resolutions are 1024x768 and upwards. 640x480 and 800x600 are a rapidly dying breed. Even then, a 500 width image isn't going to kill a 800x600 user.
You can fill a 400x75 image with as much crap as a 500x200. Likewise you can fill a 500x200 with as much beauty as a 400x75 image. Besides of which, it's all subjective in the end. One man's trash is another's treasure and all that jazz.
Might just be me, but as long as it doesn't make my page stretch horizontally and doesn't bog me down when downloading (ie. 1mb bitmaps, not several 30kb gifs/jpgs), I don't really mind personally. (well this took a while to edit...brwser crashed)
Don't forget that while increasing your sig size by only a bit you aren't really affecting how fast the board runs, if everyone does it then there might be a significant difference.
I personally thing the current sizes are fine, people who want massive sigs are just trying to compensate
Actually, remotely loaded images aren't really going to affect board load times that much. 30kb images aren't going to make the board choke and die any more than 22kb ones. All the board does it provide placeholders for images which are remotely hosted which the client's browser fills in as it recieves them (as you should notice, actual pages load first, then images).
Can someone make me an avatar and sig focused on Ground Control II? My personal(and only my) opinion is that the restrictions are fine and i have no problems with them, don't like the rules? No problem, but we can't change them anyways.
Not at all but, There were 128742 threads whining about it, never worked, maybe try spam PM an admin?

400x200, 30-40kb sounds poifect.
