I'd presume why they removed the pit of doom is because like most other pits of doom you can build down there.
The Gen room pit of doom specifically was a great spot to drop a sensory chamber and a few dcs. The rines would figure they were up the top and never look down into the pit of doom.
Other pits of doom could have a comm chair and massive loveshax built in them, it'll be interesting to see if they fixed it in 3.0. Can someone drop a few dcs off the edge of the res node in the middle of nowhere between cargo and alpha hives and see if they die? The map with the weldable resnode door near ms and eq hive (as you can probably figure i forgot the name)
