The worst physical pain I've experienced was when I shattered my ankle when I was 8 or 9. I was living in the middle east at the time, and I was on a field trip. We (my classmates and I) were a good 4 hour drive from home. We were spending the night at a hotel, which had a playground with a carriage swing (I think that's what they are called. Such swings have a large plastic carriage that can hold 4 people). I started pushing it and sure enough, I stepped forward when it was swinging down and it hit the top of my knee. The impact shattered both bones in my legs, right above the ankle. It was 8:00 PM that night, and the local hospital was closed. So for the next hour and a half, I had to ride in the back of a jeep over an unpaved road. Every bump we hit (and there were a lot of 'em) felt like a burning hand clamped about my ankle. Once we got to the hospital, I finally recieved some painkillers. I was awake all through the setting of the bone and it still hurt, but it all went well. The bones set nicely. I still limp a little at times, and my right foot turns outside when I walk, but it doesn't hinder me.

If any of you have had braces at any time -
my orthodontist put little metal guides on each of my teeth, to align a wire that ran through them. A tiny rubber band was wrapped around the guide so that its sharp metal edge did not cut my lip.
Anyway, once he took one of those rubber bands - meant to be used for 1 guide - and wrapped together two guides with it. Basically, it was a very strong rubber band wrenching my (large) front teeth together.
The first time, it started hurting so much that I cut the rubber band off myself. But he put it back on, and I figured I'd sleep through the pain. Yeah right! I woke up in an excruciating delirium screaming the orthodontist's name, and hallucinating from the pain.

Another time, I attempted a bike jump at a clearing in the woods that my friends had built jumps in. I had no previous experience with jumping bikes, so I went all the way to the back of the speed-up ramp and pedaled as hard as I could. Instead of landing on the landing ramp to the first jump, I sailed over it and landed on the takeoff ramp of the second - on my back. I couldn't breathe for a few seconds. That is SCARY, not being able to breathe...

Zig, your first entry sounds the worst. Reminds me of something I did.. I crashed into a friend while going full speed down a steep hill and slid on my knees for ~5m.

Oh, and how could I forget spraining my ankle upon landing from jumping as high as I could? The feeling of the ankle popping out... oh god..

Bah. I was thinking of THIS ONE as I was going to start posting. Anyone remember infinitum's ingrown toenail thread? Oh god, oh god, oh god. I have a bad one as I speak -- it used to be pretty bad and I went to the podiatrist to have it removed, but try as I might, they kept coming back (I was even cutting nails the right way and everything)!!!! Bleeding, oozing pus, all terrible things. So I always get it in my silly head to cut it out myself with a pair of rusty, curved fingernail scissors and a dull pair of tweezers. Sometimes it works, sometimes the shards stay in there. The shards are in there right now...

I don't play soccer for this reason.

I think that I can't seem to top the 4 flights of stairs I fell down in Florida on a vacation.

How exactly do you fall down multiple flights of stairs? You make the u-turn by yourself??

You can't unless its one with no u-turns

Remember back there where I said I fell down 5 flights of stairs? It's actually 1 flight, but its so large it'd cover 5 flights of stairs in a buildings

I had a sword slice through my left knee.

Much pain. Still hurts like hell after 2 1/2 years.

I'm just happy it stopped about half-way through.

The local ER I always goto has a plaque on the wall just for me. This is just my worst injury, I've had about 20 - 25 other ER visists though.

I'm not going to live long enough to get legally drunk.

The worst experience - I fell off my bed when I was like 8 or something. The bed was pretty high (not bunker though). On my way down, I somehow turned over and landed on my face first. Then, my arm spun around and whacked the floor (no carpet) at full speed. I hit my ring finger really hard (left hand)... it's been a really long time now; over 5 years, and my finger is still fat - about 1.4 times the width of the normal ring finger on my right hand. Maybe it's broken or something - I don't know; haven't talked to a doctor about it.
But yeah, it hurt for about half a year. I couldn't play piano at all for about 2 months - every time I would try to play something, I would accidentally use the injured finger, and it hurt like hell. I couldn't bend it more than 45 degrees for those 2 months. Now, it's fully functional - only it's still fat. Yarges.

Eh, the worst that has ever happened to me was getting racked by an instrument.

I was letting my friend screw around with my trombone, but there was something unusual about it, on the end of the slide there is suppose to be a metal piece sticking out with a piece of soft rubber covering it. (protecting against dents) The thing is, the piece of rubber on mine fell off at some point (not sure when) so there was just a blunt little piece of metal sticking out on the end of it. While he was messing around with it I decided to watch. All of he sudden he decided to push the slide out, not knowing how greased it was he pushed REALLY hard and it, with the blunt piece of metal attached, flew right into one of my testicles. I only remember seeing starts after that, and not being to walk real well for a few days.

Needless to say I was pretty shook up over the whole thing. When I finished I couldn't sleep so I grabbed a lighter, held it lit for awhile to heat up the metal top and pressed it into the inside of my forearm until it cooled off (2nd degree burn). That didnt do the trick, so I heated it longer and pressed it into my other forearm until it cooled (3rd degree burn). Finally, looking for some more sensitive skin, I heated it for awhile again and stuck it into my chest, right under the pec muscle until it cooled (3rd degree).

Then I was able to go to sleep.

I don't exactly know how to explain this, but its not pain to fall asleep. Its more like pain to calm me down if that makes any more sense. Maybe it helps to focus, I'm not exactly sure myself. Watch the movie Secretary.

Two injuries come to mind, both involving wrestling in high school.

The first was my freshman year, during practice, I was trying to teach this rather thick-headed football player how to do a double-leg takedown. Sure enough, he thinks double-leg takedown means "The Spear" and proceeds to knock me backwards, off the mat, and right through a wooden door. (We were both heavyweights)
Unfortunately, the ancient door also had an ancient non-mesh imbedded window near the top, which i put my left arm through before the door was knocked off its hinges. During the fall, my arm went straight down on a large piece of glass that hadn't broken off from the impact. Thus when I got up, I looked down to see a seven inch wide piece of glass protruding from my left arm, stuck nice and deep between the radius and ulna. Ouch, well, sorta, I didn't really feel it. Just a cold sensation. Needless to say, it bled like all hell, and the day ended with my first ride in an ambulance and fifty-five stitches.

The second came three years later, my senior year.
I was at a freestyle practice and workout session at another local school, preparing for a big tourney out in Iowa. Near the end of the practice, I again was teaching a young, but very large and strong novice how to apply a front-headlock. Well for some damn reason that only God could prolly figure, he lifts me up with my head in a half-assed headlock then proceeds to drop me straight down. You understand what fear is when your own two hundred and sixty pound body comes down on your neck. It could have been quite bad, obviously, but I came out of it with only rattled nerves and two compressed neck vertebra. (I wasn't mad at the guy, but damn, common sense? )

Just some advice, if you wrestle, be careful willya?
